EZQuest: Perhaps the World's Smallest
USB Flash Memory Drive
05/10/2004 01:27 PM

Oh nos! The (claimed) world's smallest USB flash memory drive is upon us, this time from EZQuest. The USB 2.0 drive is only 'two-quarters long and two-quarters thick,' making it at least a contender for the title, if not the absolute smallest (the Pretec drive will be arguably smaller). 128MB...

06/30/2004 12:37 PM

DriveProVP300_2.jpg imageThe Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

It's a great place to start if you're interested in any of the drives, with include units from PNY, SanDisk, Mushkin, SimpleTech, FujiFilm (a write-speed beast), Verbatim, Transcend (the overall winner), and Iomega (who did very well all around).

JCN Newswire says that Epson is claiming to have developed the world's smallest flying microrobot. Epson developed the uFR (Micro Flying Robot) to demonstrate the micromechanics technology using an ultrasonic motor and bluetooth module for remote control. The uFR flys via two contra-rotating propellers and ultrasonic motor that has the world's highest power to weight ratio. The flying robot can balance in mid-air using the world's first linear actuator stabilizer mechanism. Epson sold previous Micro Air Vehicle versions such as the EMRos and the Monsieur flying robots, so I'm wondering if this one will be out by Christmas to fly around my living room?

BrailleNote PK: World's Smallest PDA for
the Blind
06/30/2004 11:10 AM

brailleNote_PK.jpg imageThe BrailleNote PK is the world's smallest PDA for the blind, and one of the first small enough to be carried around for daily use. Powered by Windows CE, the relatively small [6.8" x 3.6" x 1.3"] unit has a mix of high-end and low-end features, with a wide variety of communications options such as Bluetooth and WiFi, Ethernet, and USB, but a relatively small amount of RAM [16MB User/16MB RAM/32MB ROM], and somewhat surprisingly (I'm serious), no LCD screen. In fact, all interfacing with the BrailleNote is done via a built-in 180cell Braille display and an 8-key Braille keyboard. The unit also supports text-to-speech out support, although not speech-to-text, if I read correctly.

It looks like a great unit, but it comes with a very steep price. The BrailleNote PK lists for just under $5,000. With the amount of geeky freedom this would afford many, though, it just might be worth it.

Tiny Hard Drive Manufacturers Turn Up
The Heat
07/01/2004 10:48 AM

toshibahdd01.jpg imageAccording to The Inquirer, Japanese companies are rapidly increasing production of their small hard drives as, unsurprisingly, the demand for tiny storage that will fit in portable electronics increases rapidly. Toshiba is planning on ramping up production of its tiny 0.85-inch hard drives to a rate of almost 200,000 a month, while Hitachi will increase its 1-inch drive production to two million units per quarter. Global hard drive markers shipped 260 million units in fiscal 2003, 80 percent of which went into servers and PCs. The remaining percentage, which goes into home electronics, are expected to grow by 50% each year -- I'm betting it will be even greater than that once the manufacturers can get enough tiny units into the channels. Two years from now there won't be a single smartphone announced without a hard drive.

Pretec USB Ear Rings: Getting Closer 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

pretec_earring.jpgYou know, with just a little tweaking (like taking off their branding and making the cases something other than plastic), Pretec could be onto something with these jewelry versions of their i-Disk Tiny flash drives. Not the necklaces, so much—they look too much like dog tags—but the ear rings could work, if the other side was copper or something instead of pink plastic. Try it one more time, Pretec, or send us a bucketful of i-Disks and we'll hand them out to all the boutique jewelry makers in New York. (Thanks, James!)

pretecmmc4.jpg imagePretec has announced what they are calling the 'World's Fastest Flash Memory Card,' a 2GB giant that uses the MMC 4 spec to transfer 4-bits of data in parallel with write speeds up to 18MB/sec and read speeds of up to 22.5MB/sec. Even better, the card is backwards-compatible with previous SD/MMC devices, albeit at lower read/write speeds. To give you some perspective, those speeds would make the 2GB Pretec card about 200 percent faster than the fastest SD cards available on the market.
