11/06/2003 01:54 AMThe Register echoes our skepticism about Sony's announcement that
they're planning a $60 MP3 player to compete with the iPod:Sony hasn't
said that its $60 music player will feature a high capacity hard drive
as the iPod does - or is as compact as the Apple machine. Hard drive
prices are falling, it's true, but ultra-compact, high capacity models
are still pretty expensive, and eat up much of the cost of
manufacturing a hard drive-based music player. We've no doubt that
Sony will offer such a device of its own, but the $60 model isn't it.
That's less than half the price of a typical 128MB solid-state MP3
player, for heaven's sake.What Sony is probably planning is some sort
of barebones player that can have a hard drive attached to it or
something like that....

music players Wednesday, the NW-HD5. While it is the fifth hard drive
player to be released by the company, it will be the first to see
worldwide distribution. Unlike Sony's previous units, the NW-HD5 is

akes a look at Sony's new 20GB Network Walkman NW-HD1, the first
Walkman portable music device to feature a hard drive (subscription
required to read the article). Already dubbed an "iPod killer" by some
industry wags, the Walkman fails to impress Mossberg on several
points, including "confusing" user interface, "tedious" song-loading
process that took more than two hours to transfer 416 songs, and less
robust companion music download service that also sports more
restrictive rules than the iTunes Music store. "The iPod wins this
round, and remains champion," said Mossberg.

So, when Symantec's Anti-Virus program — which has been around
for, what, 75 years? — lists the viruses it's found, it gives
you the three key pieces of information: The name of the infected
file, the virus, and the action Symantec took to fix the problem.
Click on this image to see the full screen capture. Unfortunately,
there's not enough room in the window to list everything. And it's an
un-resizable window with no horizontal scroll bar. And, no, hovering
doesn't work. Another couple of decades and maybe Symantec will get
this right....

KernelTrap has a very interesting article about a recent attempt to
sneak a "back door" into the Linux 2.6 kernel. Evidently someone
managed to break into the CVS server that mirrors the kernel source
tree and add a small patch allowing one to locally obtain "root"
super-user access. Fortunately, during an export from the master
BitKeeper version of the kernel source tree into the CVS mirror, the
change was detected and quickly removed.

ed the debate over "brain fingerprinting" - a technology for
reading someone's brainwaves to see if their brain has the information
stored. In other words, if you present some bit of info that only a
person involved in a crime would know - their brain fingerprint would
indicate they knew it. This is, of course, very controversial and not
everyone is convinced that it really works. The debate should rise up
again, now that a convicted murderer on death row has been given a
brain fingerprint that
shows he does
not know important details about the murder. Of course, it does
make you wonder if someone involved in a particularly horrific crime
(as this one appears to be) might black out the memory of the crime to
the point that such a brain fingerprint would come up negative.
