06/22/2005 02:48 AM
Some people call it a "tag cloud", others gave it the name "folksonomies" - they're all the same thing, and in this posting from DanandSherree.com, they show us how to create a "weighted category list" much like the tag clouds seen on Flickr and del.icio.us.

Similar to the weighted category list, the weighted keyword list builds a list of keywords used on your site and uses varying font sizes to show how popular they are. This list might be more representative of what your site is about than the weighted category list is.

The code is very simple, and can be adapted to other things besides Movable Type with a quick change of resources that it pulls from - the logic is all there...

New Type of "Game Night" at the Library?

New Type of "Game Night" at the Library? 07/07/2004 01:15 AM

Ernest Miller, proprietor of The Importance of..., received an interesting question from one of his readers.

"I've been working on something else I think might be interesting- gaming at public libraries. I've been having some success on both ends- talking to some librarians who have staged successful 'game nights' as a way of getting teens into the library, as well as with people trying to have tournaments and in need of a cheap (or free), available venue.  Precedent seems to be key.  It's one of these 'well, if so-and-so signed off on this, I guess it's okay.' Seeming 'with it' is at a premium for libraries all over, as well as serving the community in novel ways, and in particular the teens, for most of whom going to the library is anathema. Could be good traction for that same 'unimpeachably good' quality we're looking for in early activities (who can be anything other than supportive of getting the teens 'off the streets and into the libraries'?). Games make libraries seem cool, and libraries legitimate games."

Anyone know of a library doing this?

Massively Parallel Minesweeper

Massively Parallel Minesweeper 07/06/2004 04:53 PM

Under heavy pressure from Linux application server clusters, Microsoft is working on a version of Windows Server 2003 designed to support parallel computing.

Microsoft plans to aim Windows Server 2003 HPC edition, at companies in life sciences, engineering, finance, and other industries where highly scalable systems built with relatively low-cost hardware are being applied to demanding applications. “Parallel-computing clusters are increasingly being seen in the enterprise,” Microsoft product manager Dennis Oldroyd said. “It’s been the domain of academia and research. Now, with low-cost standardised hardware, it’s becoming less of a niche play.”

There's already a lot of work that's been done in this area on Linux and OSX, so Windows will have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Matrix online game hires real actors to

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Going JavaScript-less?

Going JavaScript-less? 02/18/2004 02:19 AM

How many people actually shut off JavaScript in their browsers? In the Web development world, you're constantly advised not to depend on JavaScript because "[insert double-digit percentage here] of Web surfers shut off JavaScript."

I have never known someone who shut off JavaScript. I have used a lot of computers in my life — many not my own — and never in one case have I noticed that JavaScript was intentionally disabled. I have never had anyone I know tell me that they shut off JavaScript to solve a problem. I have never even been remotely tempted to do this myself.

Is there anyone out there who has actually shut off JavaScript in their browser? Can you tell us why?

What's in a code name? 04/09/2004 03:55 PM
While most technology companies do not have official policies on how they create product code names, they are almost always dreamed up by engineers with the understanding that the code names will be for internal use only. This is because employers know that a popular code name can help engineering teams build an emotional attachment to the product.

Can you make computers perform like silicon puppets with just a few well-expressed commands? Are you at ease when faced with a hard stop and a group of peers evaluating every line of your code? Here’s your opportunity to display the grace of the true professional in a reward-rich environment. The basic idea seems to be that you're given a bunch of programming puzzles, and asked to solve them quickly and completely, and then you can try to throw edge cases to crash your opponent's code. (Sounds like the ICFP Programming Contest.) Code can be in Java, C++, C# or VB.NET. Winners get T-Shirts, cash, and a trip to Google. Registration opens October 1. Frankly, I'm a little surprised VB.NET is allowed but Python isn't, considering it's widely used at Google. Probably the TopCoder system they're using doesn't support it....
