I'll be honest, I'm not a super home
entertainment genius (although I'm starting to get it all figured
out.) But you guys make me nervous sometimes, because I'll post
something I think is cool, or like mention that I bought a crappy home
theater system, and people come out of the woodwork to tell me what an
audio newb I am. Seriously, people, I know this. (That's not to
say you've all been mean - in fact, your suggestions are part of what
helps me learn about this stuff).
So anyway, all that's to say that I sort of sometimes take a
wait-and-see on some of the audio and home theater gear and wait until
you guys tell me something is awesome, and I've really disappointed in
you all, because this stuff showed up like two whole days ago
and I'm just now seeing it. I mean, when somebody turns a giant
ten-sided die into a speaker, I expect to contacted, okay?
There are tons of cool things from CEDIA on this page, in fact,
like $40k projectors and the like, so join me in a magical journey of
learning and check this stuff out. (Thanks, Kreylix!)

Teaching Students One Sided Lesson
Entertainment Industry Continues
Teaching Students One Sided Lesson
04/26/2004 03:41 AMYou may remember that last fall the entertainment industry began a
project where they went into schools to teach a "lesson" on
why
file sharing was bad that included the lesson, "if you didn't pay
for it, you stole it." Of course, to hammer this lesson home, the
industry
gave away for free DVD players and trips to Hollywood
to those students who could come up with the best essays to express
why anything free must be stolen (sort out the irony for yourself).
Now the industry says they're so happy with the program that
they're gearing up
to use it next school year as well. This raises the very
important question of who the hell is letting the
industry into
the classroom to teach a very one-sided lesson? Anyway, while the
article does a good job of expressing the opinions of those who oppose
this program, ("It's rather like inviting the American insurance
industry into the classroom to tell kids about the future of health
care") the reporter clearly got confused on the specifics of the
entertainment industry's lawsuits. The article claims the MPAA and
the RIAA have been suing downloaders - which isn't true. The MPAA
hasn't filed any lawsuits specifically against people for using file
sharing. They have filed suit against someone caught digitizing and
uploading a movie though. Also, and this point is missed by any
number of articles on the topic, the RIAA isn't suing people for
downloading unauthorized tracks, but for
sharing those
tracks and offering them to others to download.

07/05/2004 05:20 PMWhile we try not to keep it too geeky here, because that would be
the easiest way to expose what a fraud I am bore you,
this little script from John Muehlhausen is too useful to pass over.
It lets you, with a tiny bit of Python wrangling, add Iridium paging
failover to compliment your existing pager, meaning you'll have pager
service anywhere in the world without cresting the 150 page-a-month
limit of Iridium-only service.
Of course, you would have to wear two pagers and look sort of
dorky, but if you're already telling your computer to page you via a
Python script you're probably well past the gadget dork threshold (and
good on you).
Oh, and it's not limited to Iridium, either, so you could tweak to
support a second terrestrial pager, so that if a message never makes
it to the first pager, a second person could be contacted. SNPP is
useful stuff.

Rendezvous email, a local DNS cache to futher speed name translations,
a POP server, and a secure, simple, local SMTP server that you can use
everywhere instead of switching everytime you change your network
environment. You can find it here: http://au.gu.st.
As this is an alpha, I'm looking for feedback, mainly in how the UI
should behave. Perhaps moving the whole thing to a preference pane.
Also looking for general usability comments on sending email via
Rendezvous. Pick a name and append "@gu.st" to email me.

What's a namber? A
namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For
example, 65 is
drum, and 181 is
push.
A
namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers
to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble
four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is
earth
.frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides
translation and forwarding to the real IP
address.

Hard boiled crime stories, old and new,

09/06/2004 09:05 AM
Cory Doctorow:
Hard Case Crime is a new paperback imprint that's reprinting old pulp
crime novels and commissioning new novels in the style of the old
pulps. They're publishing them in replica packaging designed to look
like the old dime-novels, and they've even brought Robert McGinnis,
best known for painting the original James Bond movie posters, out of
retirement to do cover art.
From World War II through the 1960s, paperback crime novels were one
of the fastest-selling categories in book publishing. Millions of
readers snapped up hundreds of millions of books by well-known authors
like Erle Stanley Gardner and Mickey Spillane, as well as by promising
young writers like Lawrence Block, Elmore Leonard, and Ed McBain.
Today, Block, Leonard, and McBain still make the bestseller lists with
each new hardcover -- but the pulp novels that first captured the
public's imagination weren't hardcovers. They were paperbacks you
could fit in your back pocket, with jaw-dropping cover paintings and
bare-knuckled prose that grabbed you by the collar with the first
sentence and held you until the last page. No one's published books
like that in years.
