So it's been a little while since something has sucker punched me right in lust gland, but good job Sony for sneaking this gorgeous new Vaio VGN-U70 tablet hybrid PC onto the scene. The U70 isn't an official Tablet PC, but operates without a keyboard most of the time, with...

New super skinny Sony Vaio laptop. The PCG-X505, which weighs a mere 785 grams and is just 9.7mm thick, is pretty much the lightest and thinnest laptop you can buy, and has a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 10.4-inch display. No built-in WiFi though, and most of the ports on it (like Ethernet and VGA out) have been pushed off onto a mini-dock attachment to save space. Available only in Japan right now, no word on when this might come out in the States. Read [Thanks, Gotecki]...

Sony's Black is Beautiful Projection
Screen
06/18/2004 09:28 AM

So I saw this yesterday, then spent way too much time trying to track down a picture without subscribing to the Wall Street Journal (I steal my neighbor's copy), but it's too interesting not to mention. Apparently, Sony is showing off a new projector screen that is black (instead of the normal white or gray) that looks incredible even in high ambient light situations. What they've done is add a filter to the screen that only reflects red, green, and blue, ignoring (shunning!) white and yellow light from incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, and perhaps even that cursed floating hydrogen bulb, our sun. So that's great and all, but can we get a pic? Without paying $70, I mean?

I swear, once the Journal went to color they sold out all their indie cred.

Tablet Mac on the way?

Tablet Mac on the way? 08/19/2004 01:53 AM
An article at The Register reveals a tablet computer concept that Apple has filed for European design trademark. The images shown with the article depict a machine that resembles the top half on an iBook. With nothing more that the trademark paperwork, a few sketches and a list of Apple engineers and designers to go on, that actual purpose for this device is still unknown.

Anyone tried Tablet PC?

Anyone tried Tablet PC? 04/13/2004 02:02 AM

My 4-year-old Thinkpad with a 2-year-old 48 GB disk drive is literally falling apart, having sustained one or two drops too many.  I want to replace it with a new Thinkpad with a 160 GB hard drive but sadly the drive makers aren't producing high-capacity 2.5" drives.  Anyone out there had good luck with Tablet PC?  I'm thinking about getting th is Toshiba to take on a trip to Ecuador and Peru (leaving April 20/21).  It won't have a high-capacity hard drive but it might be a fun toy and would at least do a few things that my current notebook can't.

Please comment if you own or have owned a Tablet PC.

The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet

The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet 07/30/2004 08:55 AM

A5land.jpg imageGadget Madness brings to our attention a prototype sub-tablet PC called the A5 that is reminiscent of the Sony U50/U70, although not quite as nice looking. While the prototype "runs RISC OS under Windows XP," for most people the "Windows XP" part is all that is going to matter. An integrated 8.4-inch 800 by 600 pixel screen, 40GB hard drive, and detachable keyboard and touchpad round out the unit. Unfortunately, there's no real word on what class of processor it uses, information that is sure to become available if any OEMs decide to actually mass-produce the unit.

Apple Tablet or something.... else?

Apple Tablet or something.... else? 08/13/2004 12:42 PM
mac_tabletApple has apparently filed for a design trademark on a handheld computer resembling an iBook without the keyboard. From The Register:
"Hints that Apple might be working on such a product emerged in 2003 when a source close to Taiwanese contract manufacturer Quanta claimed that the company had been hired by Apple to build what was dubbed a 'wireless display...

The device is certainly a logical extension of what it's been doing with iTunes and AirPort Express. While its mini wireless access point is good for streaming audio from a host Mac to a hi-fi, it lacks a local control unit. It's tempting to view this latest design filing as the basis for just such a device.'"

I read Xeni's "Toy Zen" post, and it reminded me of Cincinnati's Toy Lab, a wonderful (non-profit) place where children (and adults) make toys out of old toys. They run all their donated toys through a gigantic washing machine several times before unleashing them on the masses. Kids assemble their toy, name it, and assign it powers before having it photographed and placed on the Web for all to see. I've spent hours of productivity giggling at the toys these kids have invented.
