FCC Allows Add-on Antennas But Read the
Fine Print
07/23/2004 11:39 AM
FCC rule allows end-users to change out antennas on their Wi-Fi and other gear legally if the manufacturer has performed the right tests and the antennas conform to certain guidelines: Jim Thompson alerted me to FCC rule 04-165 issued July 12, 2004, which has some substantial changes for devices that use unlicensed spectrum, most significantly Wi-Fi. The rules affect devices that operate under Part 2 and Part 15 rules, and we're most concerned with Part 15, which governs 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and several bands in 5 GHz. The most notable general applicable of this rule change is in section 2, which starts with point 18: "Replacement Antennas for Unlicensed Devices." Until now, the FCC has required that any antenna to be used with a device operating under Part 15 rules had to be tested and certified as part of a system. There was no mix and match proviso. Further, the FCC required unique connectors for each manufacturer, and required new connectors to be designed as the existing ones became commonplace. "Wait," you may ask--"I can go to HyperLink Technologies or other companies and buy antennas with the right connectors and attach them to my Wi-Fi gateway. If it's illegal, how can I buy this gear?" Simple. It's legal to sell antennas; it's illegal to use them. It's the same logic that guides the sale of bongs and switchblade kits. It's opposite to the logic that underlies the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The antenna/switchblade law essentially says that the seller isn't responsible for all the uses to which a purchaser may put a product. The purchaser is obliged to know local and federal rules and conform to them. Thus, attach the antenna, and you're a pirate. Assemble the switchblade, and you're a criminal. Forget that there have been approximately zero prosecutions for the use of these antennas on home or business systems. But no one wants to be in de facto violation of a law, especially businesses that may considering building out Wi-Fi as part of their operations. The lawyers might look askance, and the companies might have to pay enormously higher fees to purchase legal antennas--if they're available. Those fees help cover the companies' cost in certifying the antennas as part of a system, but also represent their lock-in market for legal use. The FCC rule doesn't suddenly make all antennas legal for all systems. Instead, they have chosen...

Read any good terrorist books lately?

Read any good terrorist books lately? 09/21/2004 01:05 PM
Among many other unfortunate provisions in the Patriot Act, passed in haste and hysteria in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, there's one that's especially loathsome to American values: It gives the government an unprecedented and scary carte blanche to paw through library and bookstore records to see what you've been reading. If you believe that such records might actually help the government nail the next wave of al-Qaida terrorists, then you don't have to do anything. But if you believe, as I do, that this particular power is useless for that goal -- but might prove handy for John Ashcroft and successors should they decide that, for example, citizens who read too many books about subject X might warrant close surveillance -- then you should go here and sign the petition by the Campaign for Reader Privacy, a coalition of booksellers, librarians and writers, to push Congress to change this un-American law.

This particular part of the Patriot Act is one of those stealth provisions that simply invites government abuse. Consider: "The FBI may request the records secretly; it is not required to prove that there is 'probable cause' to believe the person whose records are being sought has committed a crime; and the bookseller or librarian who receives an order is prohibited from revealing it to anyone except those whose help is needed to produce the records."

This isn't the sort of power we should trust in any government's hands; given the current administration's record, it's even scarier.

Online multimedia short "Craziest"

Online multimedia short "Craziest" 04/08/2005 12:54 AM
Xeni Jardin: "Craziest" is an intriguing first in a series of short stories offered online in Flash and in audio podcast. The subject, loosely speaking: braniacs who think too much. Editor Liz Dubelman sez:
The inspiration for CRAZIEST came one day while I was listening to Bookworm with Michael Silverblatt on KCRW (my local NPR station). I am an NPR junkie. I feel lonely when I don’t have it on in my car or streaming out of my computer speakers. Anyway, his guest was Myla Goldberg, who wrote "The Bee Season." I thought, if spelling bee champions are weird, Scrabble players are at least as weird. I began to explore people who build “thought castles” people who take thinking too far. What would make someone need to create her own order? Who would that person be that would have such a strong need for magical thinking?
