05/08/2004 11:05 PMwashingtonpost.com - If anybody can get Internet music downloads
right, it should be Sony Corp. The company has years of experience
selling records, consumer electronics and personal computers -- and
it's had plenty of time to study earlier digital-music ventures.

Sony launches music download service:
Connect
05/06/2004 11:38 AM
Sony
launched a noninfringing music downloading service,
entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and
including a revised Napster .
Connect is based on a downloadable client ,
offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers
now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a
subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to
indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital
rights management ( DRM
) application,
MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files.
Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is
not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player.
The desktop client
is available for Windows machines only.

Copy Protection
06/22/2005 02:17 AMA simple mechanical way for Windows users to defeat SunnComm's
MediaMaxx copy protection scheme, used widely in audio CDs produced by
Sony BMG, is being offered on request via e-mail by SunnComm itself,
the company's vice president of marketing and sales, Scott Stoegbauer,
told Tom's Hardware Guide today.
The scheme was developed by SunnComm through its MediaMaxx division in
order to prevent listeners on Windows-based PCs from easily making
copies of audio CD-based music as MP3 files. Other software currently
produced by SunnComm does enable legitimate copies to be made in
Windows Media format (WMV), which cannot be (easily) burned to CD.

Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
01/08/2004 08:41 PMOne of the very good complaints about online music stores is that they
offer all songs at the exact same price - which doesn't make much
sense in the market place. So, one company is trying to test that out
by
offer
ing dynamic pricing for its downloadable songs. The songs all
start at the low low price of $0.10 per song, and then fluctuate based
on demand. The company is still paying the $0.67 per song price to
the music labels, so they're losing money on plenty of songs - but are
saying that's the cost of the experiment. After they've spent the
amount they've set aside, they'll go back to the old way of pricing.
There are a few problems with this. First, explicit dynamic pricing
tends to get a negative reaction from consumers - who feel they get
ripped off when someone else bought the same product from the same
store at a lower price. More importantly, though, true market pricing
isn't just a function of demand - but of supply and demand. In this
case, there's an infinite supply, so we're not really talking about
market pricing at all. Furthermore, this service competes against
plenty of other services that charge around a dollar for songs, so
there's a clear upper limit on what they can charge for any song, no
matter how popular. An interesting experiment, certainly, but not
necessarily indicative of market pricing.
