The military gets it

The military gets it 05/10/2004 04:09 PM
For a look at how the professional military views the Abu Ghraib outrages, see the The Army Times, the unofficial voice of the Army, which today called for the relief of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and chairman of the Joint Chiefs Meyers: There is no excuse for the behavior displayed by soldiers in the now-infamous pictures and an even more damning report by Army Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba. Every soldier involved should be ashamed. But while responsibility begins with the six soldiers facing criminal charges, it extends all the way up the chain of command to the highest reaches of the military hierarchy and its civilian leadership. The entire affair is a failure of leadership from start to finish. From the moment they are captured, prisoners are hooded, shackled and isolated. The message to the troops: Anything goes... Army commanders in Iraq bear responsibility for running a prison where there was no legal adviser to the commander, and no ultimate responsibility taken for the care and treatment of the prisoners. Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, also shares in the shame. Myers asked “60 Minutes II” to hold off reporting news of the scandal because it could put U.S. troops at risk. But when the report was aired, a week later, Myers still hadn’t read Taguba’s report, which had been completed in March. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also failed to read the report until after the scandal broke in the media. ... This was not just a failure of leadership at the local command level. This was a failure that ran straight to the top. Accountability here is essential — even if that means relieving top leaders from duty in a time of war. The Army gets it, but Bush still doesn't. The fish rots from the head....

Air Force confirms Bush wore award he never earned. Following the earlier revelation that George W. Bush was photographed wearing military ribbons he never earned, arguments were made against the charge, in some cases based on the political leaning of the source. The Air Force Personnel Center and the Air Force Historical Research Center both state that Bush never recieved the award displayed in the photograph. The Un iform Code of Military Justice states that this is an act punishable by six months confinment and a discharge from the service. (via OW)

My favorite one is the one on War Psychiatry, which includes summaries of studies that have been done on veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and another section on POWs and their phychiatric reactions (perhaps it might explain some things about Kerry or McCain?). Other topics include Medical Aspects of Harsh Environments (Vol. 1), Medi cal Aspects of Chemical and Biological Warfare, and Medical Consequences of Nuclear Warfare (<-- pdf file).

Military To Jam GPS Signals

Military To Jam GPS Signals 06/14/2004 03:33 AM
If you're out on a boat on the east coast this week, don't expect to rely on your GPS navigation system. It appears that the government isn't just interested in jamming mobile phones for military reasons - but are now testing systems to jam GPS signals along the east coast as well. They've been trying to get the message out, but it's likely that some people out on their boats may find themselves a bit less sure of where they are. Of course, it was partly because of this very threat of US jamming of GPS signals that Europe has been working on their own satellite location system, Galileo - which will be independent of military control. This also might mean that any jamming by the US of GPS won't much matter once Galileo is up and running.

Our High Tech Military

Our High Tech Military 05/20/2004 11:25 AM

Test of Air Force radio jams area's garage door openers: Maybe jamming garage door openers is just a sneaky battle tactic — they can't fight back if they can't get their vehicles out of the garage.

A new military radio system is jamming remote-control garage doors in communities near this Florida Panhandle base.

During testing last week of the $5.5 million two-way radio system at Eglin, homeowners in Niceville, Valparaiso and the Crestview area reported that their garage door openers failed to work.

The Conscience of Joe Darby
"Because the irony of all this is that the people in Somerset County who turned their backs on Joe, well, those people would probably feel very different if they knew the rest of the story. That it really wasn't about softening prisoners, gathering intelligence, or trying to win the war. That it wasn't even about losing control in the heat of the moment. It was about getting up in the middle of the night and going somewhere you weren't supposed to go, then beating and raping people there. It was premeditated violent crime."

Military Stressed Over Coke Can GPS

Military Stressed Over Coke Can GPS 07/02/2004 08:22 AM

Militar y frets over Coke's phones, GPS: The military is asking soldiers to "examine their Coke cans" before bringing them into meetings. Pepsi is about to take a huge leap in the military market.

There's a new security threat at some of the nation's military bases, and it looks uncannily like a can of Coke.

Specially rigged Coke cans, part of a promotion, contain cell phones and global positioning chips. That has officials at some installations worried that the cans could be used to eavesdrop, and they are instituting protective measures.
