Internet Changing The Home Buying
Process

Internet Changing The Home Buying
Process
11/14/2003 12:38 PM
The common refrain in the early days of internet commercialization was that it would help get rid of "the middleman". The problem with this, of course, was that some middlemen (and women) are there for a pretty good reason. However, some areas are clearly getting squeezed. Real estate agents are discovering that most people coming to them h ave done much of the necessary research online and don't need nearly as much hand holding throughout the process. Because of that, they also don't expect to pay commissions as high as they used to. Having the real estate agent still helps, but it's in a diminished capacity. Of course, the internet also helps the agents by weeding out those who are less likely to be interested, saving them time on wasted house showings. Again, it sounds like this is a case where the internet is helping to change the role of a job, but not necessarily eliminate it.

MATT GALLANT -- Developer Climax would very much like you to know that there is more than one MMORPG on the way that starts with "War", so they've released information concerning their adaptation of the moneygrubbing-est tabletop wargame ever, Warhammer 40K.

The latest information concerns the careers players will be able to start off in on their quest to do whatever. There are eight in all, and as the player advances, there will be over seventy career options. In case you were wondering from the above image, none of these eight beginning options is "line dancer". That's just a test of how the helmets fit, or at least that's all it appears to be.

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

A Panamanian-American couple invited me over to dinner at their house the other night.  They are both well-educated and have excellent careers.  Their girls are 8 and 9.  I walked in the door to find an impeccably neat household.  No toys cluttering the floor.  Both husband and wife were relaxed and happy to chat.  Eventually an excellent meal appeared, cooked and served by one of two live-in nannies.  The dishes disappeared and the kids came into the room to hang out with the parents.

By dessert I'd figured out what was wrong with the picture.  These people had as much free time and energy to socialize as single childless Americans.  My American friends who are married with children are capable of straightening up the house and entertaining at home perhaps once every two months.  These upper middle-class Panamanians could do that every night if they wished.  Americans with kids are exhausted by the effort of driving them around and reshuffling the clutter.  Panamanians have their chauffeur do the chauffeuring.

All of the magic (two nannies and a full-time driver) happens for $1000/month.  A perfectly lovely house in a nice area can be had for $250,000.

A friend in Silicon Valley sent me this article on career choices for engineers in the U.S.

[If you're looking to transition out of coding you might consider opening a helicopter flight school in Edmonton.  The economy here is booming due to the high price of oil (Alberta actually has more petroleum reserves than Saudi Arabia but they require some work to extract, unlike in the Persian Gulf).  There is one CFI here with a Robinson R22.  He charges CAD$500 per hour!  The price in the U.S. is closer to USD$200 or only about half.]

It’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving and managing growth.
