How Many Ways Are There To Exploit The
Google IPO News?
05/18/2004 01:13 PMIn the early days of the bubble, lots of no name dot coms liked to try
to get attention for themselves by listing the names of every big
internet player in their press releases - even if they had nothing to
do with them. For example, I remember one tiny dot com that put out a
press release talking about how they were opening up an e-commerce
site (I can't remember selling what) that would be "just like Amazon,
eBay, eToys, Pets.com, etc..." back when a few of those were still
considered big success stories. The entire point was so that
financial sites that list press releases mentioning those companies
would post the press release. Other tricks included bizarre moves
like tiny companies announcing that they had "formed a partnership
with Amazon.com" after they were approved to be in Amazon's affiliate
program (just like thousands and thousands of others). So, now, of
course, the way to get yourself press is to somehow get your name in
the same paragraph as Google. With that in mind, some tiny search
engine company most people have probably never heard of has announced
that, despite Google's announcement,
t
hey, themselves, will not be going public. Well, thank you very
much. I know that I, for one, was kind of excited about a Google IPO,
but the one I was really waiting for was this no name search company
that no one has heard of. So much for that plan...

WhenU Still Gaming Google In Other Ways
WhenU Still Gaming Google In Other Ways
05/17/2004 03:04 AMLast week there was some news concerning Google and Yahoo's decision
to
ban
WhenU's sites after it was determined that they were purposely
using "cloaking" methods to get better rankings in their search
results. WhenU quickly blamed an outside search engine optimizer.
Jeremy Wagstaff points us to an updated story by Ben Edelman
showing what looks like even more gaming of search engines by WhenU.
It turns out that WhenU (possibly against copyright) has
made many copies
of 26 news articles favorable to them and placed them across 12
different websites owned by WhenU. This way, when Google is searching
it picks up multiple copies with the theory being that these positive
articles are more likely to show up in a search than any of the many
negative articles about the company's practices.

Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And

Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And
Growing...
08/17/2004 05:02 PMA couple weeks ago we had the story about the
not
really free, not really broadband, free broadband scam from a
company named Juice Boost. Broadband Reports has an update today
about how the
scam/joke/pyrami
d scheme/something is taking on an incredible life of its own.
The scam, of course, involves some sort of non-existent accelerator
software and claims that even the most non-tech-savvy individual
should realize are completely made up (free broadband connections over
telephone lines and a regular modem that never go down and they'll pay
you if you receive a spam message or if the connection drops among
other, equally ridiculous claims). Looking for any kind of details on
the company turn up nothing but more affiliates (some of whom have
even sent out press releases or promises of
bars of silver if
you sign up). The problem, of course, is that they're promising
affiliates lots of cash for signing up more people (limited to the
first... oh, 80 million) so the affiliate spammers are coming out of
the woodwork taking the ridiculous promises of Juice and "boosting"
them even higher. Hopefully, this is all just a demonstration of how
ridiculous most affiliate programs are, but that seems unlikely.

Plenty to do outside of Macworld
Plenty to do outside of Macworld
01/05/2005 01:25 PMAs San Francisco gears up for next week's Macworld Conference & Expo,
those heading to the show are finalizing plans for times for off-site
activities.
Now in its tenth year, the Hess Memorial Events List offers a
comprehensive list of events surrounding Macworld, including book
signings, parties, presentations and other special events. Those who
wish, may also sign up for the Hess Party and Event List Newsletter to
receive notices of events as they are announced.
Anyone interested in meeting other Spymac members, mac_daddy1704 (Adam
Jackson) has put together a list of activities. Find out more about
what Jackson has organised for members to meet up and get to know each
other while exploring San Francisco during Macworld week from his
posted itinerary.
San Francisco is full of free Wi-Fi locations, and list of San
Francisco's Wi-FI hot spots could be useful for those on the go, or
for those who don't want to pay for hotel internet access while in the
city. A map of free Wi-Fi hot spots can be found at Bay Area FreeFi.
No trip to San Fransciso would be complete without a trip to one of
San Francisco's Apple stores. During the week of Macworld, the Apple
Store San Francisco and Stonestown will be offering presentations on
iPhoto, GarageBand, Mac OS X, iMovie, iPhoto, Final Cut Express, .Mac,
and iPod and iTunes throughout the day, as well as several workshops
and "Meet the Author" events. Driving directions, addresses and phone
numbers, as well as the full calendar of events can be found on the
Apple retail store page.

Plenty Of Identity Theft Going Around
01/22/2004 02:06 PMThe FTC has put out their list of what people were complaining to them
about, and it seems that
identity theft tops the list for the fourth straight year -
with 42% of complaints concerning the crime (up from 40% the year
before). What's most interesting to me about this, though, is that
despite all this identity theft, we still haven't done much to prevent
it. It still seems like most lawmakers and authorities don't see it
as a serious problem.

No Channels, But Plenty To Watch
No Channels, But Plenty To Watch
07/02/2004 06:02 PMFor years, the joke has been that we kept getting more television
channels, but there was consistently less on TV. It used to be that
the idea of having 100 channels was amazing, but now people have a few
hundred channels to choose from on many TV systems. However, the
latest report from Nielsen says that, for the first time ever,
the
average number of channels available has dropped. TV execs
are freaking out and want a recount. Some are blaming things like
TiVos for the mess, but Ernest Miller (at the link above) makes the
argument that the concept of "channels" is going away thanks to the
internet. People don't want more "channels" -- they want more
interactivity and control, and you just don't find that with TV these
days.

Plenty of Linux jobs -- at the top,

02/11/2004 09:54 PMStacy Holland is a California-based executive recruiter who
specializes in finding people with Linux-related skills. Her business
card has her photo at the top, and beneath her photo it says, "The
Linux Lady." She started working with Linux people (and using Linux)
in 1999, and decided to concentrate on Linux because, she says, "It's
a very exciting, close-knit family of technically-motivated,
interesting people." This doesn't mean every NewsForge reader should
immediately send Stacy a resume. She only recruits management types.
But she has plenty of career advice for coders (and others) who want
to become top management, along with tips on how to ride the waves of
today's shifting IT job market.
