Takenoko are bamboo shoots. We're in takenoko season right now. You take a special hoe and walk around in a bamboo forest until you step on the tip of the takenoko. The best and most tender takenoko are the ones that are barely visible. As they grow larger, they become tougher. You have to then dig around the takenoko, find where it attaches to the root network and chop it at the right angle to get it to come off easily. Then you shuck them. After shucking, a very important step is the aku nuki. Many vegetables, particularly takenoko have a very bitter taste that comes from impurities (alkaline solution and dissolved elements) which is called aku. Aku nuki (removing the aku) is typically done stewing the takenoko with komenuka (rice husk powder) and Japanese red chili peppers. The best takenoko is tender takenoko picked and immediately stewed, left over night in the water, then prepared with rice, stew or some other typical Japanese dish in the morning. Yum.

Death is not news to Buddhist monks. The mi nute observation and contemplation of corpses is a standard Buddhist practice to increase awareness of the transitory nature of all things (including you, gentle reader.) This friendly attitude toward what is hidden away in most of the "civilized" world has prepared monks in the tsunami-stricken nations to deal with the task of cremating thousands of dead bodies. Preparing for the inevitable turns out to be a useful tool for facing the unthinkable. [via a fine new site called The Buddhist Channel].

It's completely natural for companies in changing marketplaces to look for ways to protect their existing cash cows -- but it makes for a dangerous long term strategy. Here's another example from the newspaper industry. While not everyone agrees that newsp rint is going away, all of the talk about putti ng up pay walls for the online versions of newspapers or keepin g certain content only in the print edition is all about trying to artificially boost the appeal of the paper version in relation to the digital version. That's backwards. As new studies are showing, many in the younger generation of today won't take a newsprint subscription even if it's free. Not only do they not find it an efficient way to get and read the news, they get upset at the growing pile of newsprint in their homes. It makes them feel guilty for not reading it. It's a psychological barrier that free subscriptions and exclusive content will never get over. Instead, news organizations should be working on ways to better attract users to their digital editions, which means providing them what they want -- not making it harder for them to get what they want.

"Preparing for Emergencies" parody site

"Preparing for Emergencies" parody site 07/27/2004 11:04 AM
Thomas Scott sez: As you may or may not know, the UK .gov is sending out leaflets on what to do in an emergency (read: terrorist attack, not that we want you to panic, although if you panicked a bit and voted for us again it'd be nice) to every household in the UK. As part of this, they registered www.preparingforemergencies.gov.uk .

Pity they forgot to register www.preparingforemergencies.co.uk , really.

I managed to grab it, and hastily cobbled together a parody. (The original's under Crown Copyright, and the parody is so ridiculous as to have no chance of misleading those looking for the genuine info. It includes information on coping with a zombie attack, for crying out loud.) I got a few pleasant emails, including one saying that the site had done the rounds of the top emergency planning civil servants. And then, not twelve hours after the original site went up, I got a rather different one from the UK .gov ...

I considered giving up, but heck -- it's a parody, it's obviously a parody, and I'm damned if I'm going to be strongarmed into taking it down. As a concession, I added a conspicuous "this is a parody" notice to the bottom of the home page. Link
