German inventor may sue Apple over iPod

German inventor may sue Apple over iPod 06/04/2004 12:26 PM
A German inventor named Andreas Pavel may hit Apple with lawsuits over the iPod, according to UK-based publication The Independent. Pavel patented a design for a portable music system he called the "Stereobelt" in the 1970s, and while it never went into production, Sony's Walkman did -- after Pavel filed his patent. Lawsuits ensued, and Sony recently offered Pavel a multimillion dollar payout to settle his long-standing disputes. Pavel is purportedly considering using his payout from Sony to fund litigation against Apple for the iPod in Italy and Canada, where his patents may still be valid.

Torture and Truth and The Logic of

Torture and Truth and The Logic of
Torture
06/04/2004 03:58 PM
Torture and Truth and The Logic of Torture--Mark Danner writes about Article 15-6 Investigation of the 800th Military Police Brigade (The Taguba Report) and Report of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the Treatment by the Coalition Forces of Prisoners of War and Other Protected Persons by the Geneva Conventions in Iraq During Arrest, Internment and Interrogation in the former and concludes thusly in the latter:

Behind the exotic brutality so painstakingly recorded in Abu Ghraib, and the multiple tangled plotlines that will be teased out in the coming weeks and months about responsibility, knowledge, and culpability, lies a simple truth, well known but not yet publicly admitted in Washington: that since the attacks of September 11, 2001, officials of the United States, at various locations around the world, from Bagram in Afghanistan to Guantanamo in Cuba to Abu Ghraib in Iraq, have been torturing prisoners.   (More Within)

Mashup: Movable Type and WordML

Mashup: Movable Type and WordML 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Word docs from Movable Type: I have to say that Microsoft is doing some great things with the new underlying XML format in Office 2003 and up. Using that functionality, the guys at Movable Type's Pronet published a simple template that outputs Word ML, and thus creates what's essentially a Word document directly from Movable Type.

Bloggers who are used to updating their status by posting to their Movable Type blogs can use a template like this to easily reformat their posts into a weekly report in Word that can be emailed around or simply posted to a web server for easy access.

I plugged the template in, and generated this Word document (60KB PDF; opens in a new window — it's actually a PDF generated from Word 2003, since you have to have at least that version to view it). I would have had to screw a bit with the template tags to get it to come out exactly like the Web version (we use a special plugin for line breaks, for instance), but even at the defaults, there you have a Word document of the last five posts to this blog.

The implications of WordML in general are fantastic. In the business I support, we were always trying to come up with a modular way to create large documents — piecing them together from smaller documents. After trying a million different things in Word, we finally defaulted to two dozen Word files and just doing "Insert > File" until we had amassed the file we wanted.

With Word ML, we could maintain the pieces in in an actual content management system (this is screaming out for eZ publish), then output them in whatever order we needed, to be opened and printed from Word. I can't wait to start playing with this.

(Also, wouldn't this obviate the need for a PDF rendering library, assuming you were using a Windows server? If you need a PDF version of content, output what you need in WordML, then instantiate Word and print to PDF via VBA. And how long before someone just comes up with a WordML-to-PDF executable that lets you skip instantiating Word altogether? Extra points if they make it for *nix...)

French DJ/producer duo Loo & Placido tell BoingBoing:
We've been doing bootlegs / mash-ups for a few years now. For the last several months, we've been working with MTV on exclusive bootlegs for a new show called ""MTV MASH" which is broadcast all around Europe 3 times a week. We already made12 tracks for the show so far. If you want to listen to our bootlegs, check out our website, it's still under construction, but there's already a lot of tracks to listen to.
Link to the L&P site. The MTV out-takes you can listen to here are terrific, and if this is what ended up on the cutting room floor -- the show should be amazing. I'm particularly fond of the Missy Elliot meets Green day track "get your green on," as well as the Goldbug meets ODB number "Golden Bastard."

Cory Doctorow: Hank sez, "Where ordinary mash-up mixes mix two or perhaps three songs, this mix is made up by appx 40 Beatles songs, with sometimes five different songs playing at the same time. A must hear!" I concur; this is mind-blowingly amazing. Man, all these Beatles mash-ups this year are really making me yearn for my old Beatles vinyl. I especially love the juxtaposition in this track of the old skiffle-Beatles with the later psychedelia. Soo-poib. 5MB MP3 Link (Thanks, Hank!)

PS: I am reasonably certain that this server will be shortly overwhelmed. If you've got a mirror, email me and I'll post a link to it. However, I have no such mirror, so if you find yourself unable to get a copy, don't look at me!

Update 1: Ian Clarke, the co-author of the awesome P2P tool Freenet, has graciously offered to distribute this file through Dijjer, his new (still pre-beta) P2P content distribution tool; here's the Dijjer Link

Update 2: Brian Arnold offers this more conventional mirror

Update 3: David Chin was good enough to make and seed this Torrent for the file (though I have my doubts about BitTorrent's efficacy with a file of a paltry five megabytes)

Some good things from the always interesting SorobanGeeks' Akihabara News, including these Computex showing of a portable media player from MSI, the 'Mega View 512' (top right) and the Piston Socket 775 mini PC from FIC (bottom right) which looks an awful lot like those tube subwoofers, but may just be cylindrical for coolness's sake. Video mashup of Russ Meyer + Hoodoo

Video mashup of Russ Meyer + Hoodoo
Gurus / Persian Rugs
09/24/2004 11:08 AM
Xeni Jardin: Following up to this week's sad news that sexploitation auteur Russ Meyers has passed away (Link), BoingBoing reader Richard Crepeau says, "Thought I'd spread the word about a Hoodoo Gurus side project called the Persian Rugs. One of their videos uses Russ Meyer clips from Mondo Topless. A nice hybrid between garage rock and camp."

On their website, the band says:

"Music and sex go very well together. For proof, just take a look at the video for the Persian Rugs' new single 'Be A Woman'. The band and director Todd Sheldrick have created the perfect setting for the band's 60's Punk-inspired Primal Rock: strippers and cavemen collide in a 21st Century psychedelic garden of eden. (...) The Rugs got in touch with famed 60's director Russ Meyer, the maker of such films as 'Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!'and Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls' (the latter a direct influence on the Austin Powers movies) and asked for permission to incorporate footage from one of his cult classics, 'Mondo Topless', into their new filmclip. Russ asked to hear the song first, [and] loved it (...)

Link to "Be a Woman" *.asx video in low and hi-res, contains megadoses of kitsch nudity (and shots of vintage '60s electronic equipment). How did those ladies make their humongous breasts do that stuff on rhythm? Weighed down by all that eyeliner, no less?

Distributing MP3 Via Newspaper 04/15/2004 09:05 AM

Storing on paper: This seems pretty useless, but very cool nonetheless. So a lot like Ashton Kutcher, really.

Tokyo's Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan’s leading newspaper, has been printing on the corner of a page a series of black dots, which are not Japenese characters. These black dots are in a tight, uneven pattern. From a distance it looks like a woven fabric, and closely it looks like a snowy TV screen. When this page is fed through a scanner, the true nature of the image is revealed: it’s software — a computer data. In this way, the newspaper is sending music files, video games software, etc., to its 10 million customers.

Here's the Web site of the company that makes the technology. Some interesting reading there.

I found this via a neat new blog called hypulp which I found via Metafilter.
