Well, everyone expected Google to get around to naming additional underwriters for their IPO beyond leads Morgan Stanley and CSFB, and now they've gone and named 29 other banks - including, interestingly, Goldman Sachs. Last month, after the IPO filing was made there was a series of stories saying Goldman had been cut from the IPO team for breaking the "rules" that Google's co-founders had set up, and daring to make a pitch to Google's VCs. While they may have lost the lead role, they are still a part of the overall syndicate. As expected also, WR Hambrecht, the Dutch auction specialist is on the list. The list is a fairly complete list of major Wall Street banks. Looks like no one wanted to be completely left out. Off the top of my head, I can't seem to name a major bank that's not on the list.

Analysis: Will Wall Street turn its back
on Google?
05/21/2004 03:47 PM
As high-flying and wildly profitable as Google is right now as a privately held company, things are going to change big time following its IPO this summer. So much so, in fact, that it wouldn't be surprising to see co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page bail out to do something else -- or nothing at all, if they choose. They may find they don't need the humongous headaches running a public company will bring.

Google IPO Scam Victims Fooled By Fancy

Google IPO Scam Victims Fooled By Fancy
Wall Street Terms
05/10/2004 02:32 PM
Back in March we wrote about a scam from someone who convin ced a lot of people who should know better he could sell them pre-IPO Google shares. Among the still unnamed victims were "the chairman of a global telecommunications company, a New York investment banker, a corporate attorney and a senior executive at a brokerage firm." These folks forked over half a million dollars without any due diligence to the guy who claimed to know the founders of Google from attending Stanford (which he didn't) and via working at Kleiner Perkins (again not true). We also had a post noting that a simple search query on the guy's name, though not on Google, would have turned up his questionable history. It appears that the NY Times has just discovered the story, but did a little extra sleuthing to point out that, beyond their scam-blinding greed to get in on the Google IPO, what really fooled these investment bankers and big time executives was the sophisticated Wall Street lingo used by the scammer. It turns out that if you just say "participation agreement," "stock purchase agreement" and "promissory note," combined with "Google IPO" wealthy stock brokers and executives will simply open their wallets for you. Also worth noting is that the scammer doesn't appear to have stored away most of his ill-gotten gains, but rather spent a large portion of it partying at expensive clubs and restaurants.

SAN FRANCISCO - On Tuesday, executives from Sun Microsystems Inc. will head to Wall Street, hoping to convince customers and partners in the financial industry that the company continues to be viable in the industry that Sun President and Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Scwhartz affectionately refers to as "the swamp from which we spawned." Sun is expected to make a number of new product and partnership announcements during an event for customers, press and analysts at the W Hotel in New York City on Tuesday.

Cox Wants Out Of Wall Street Scrutiny

Cox Wants Out Of Wall Street Scrutiny 08/02/2004 01:39 PM
It appears that cable company Cox Communications is sick of all the pressures of being a public company. Believing that the short term pressures of Wall Street are holding back their ability to aggressively take on the competition, the company is trying to buy out public shareholders and take the company private. This does come right after what was labeled a "disappointing" quarter, so it appears that the family that controls Cox simply is fed up with having to worry about such things every few months.
