05/30/2004 08:25 PMAnne and I walked 13 miles today, along The Strand from Dockweiler to
Hermosa and back.
It was a perfect day to walk. Blue skies, a light breeze, tons of
friendly people out walking their dogs, and a beach absolutely
packed with people playing volleyball. There was this festive
atmosphere everywhere, and I felt like my soul got a little recharge
while my body got a light workout.

Walking Manhattan
01/03/2005 01:41 AMIn the last New Yorker issue of
2004 (I'm doing some catch-up reading), Ben McGrath has a fun
Talk of the Town piece on Caleb Smith, a guy who walked every
street on the island of Manhattan over the last year and a
half.
The end of the piece mentions Mike Epstein, of the excellent Creative
Commons-licensed photography blog Satan's Laundromat.
Mike has taken up Smith's peripatetic legacy; he has "so far logged
just two dozen miles, but he has plans for one-upmanship. He intends
to do Roosevelt Island."

11/19/2003 08:01 AMI don't know why I started doing it, but for one reason or another
I set about recording my feet walking through Vancouver when I was up
there last week. I assembled a bunch of the clips and slapped a song I
listened to a great deal on my way up there, Scott and Shannon's Nothing
New. After editing the clips together in iMovie for about 30
minutes I've nearly gotten motion sickness, but hopefully you don't
feel that way while watching it.

Plustech Walking Machine

Joel is out gallivanting across New
Orleans and has presumably found his way to CTIA, where he'll be
reporting from soon. Meanwhile, he's left the lot of you in my
(allegedly) capable hands, with this message: Caveat emptor. That
being said, let's get down to it. Plustech Oy (a John Deere
subsidiary) has unleashed their Walking Machine—an
indispensable, six-legged log-hauling machine that I assume can eat
orphanages and other small buildings with ease. In reality, the
Walking Machine is use for foresting and can determine ground pressure
and adjust the machine's six shoes appropriately, allowing it to
traverse various terrains. It's also able to detect and avoid
obstacles, simply stepping over things in its path. Brilliantly
controlled with a single joystick (and a complex computer navigation
system), the Plustech website has some videos of the Walking Machine
in action.

Robotic walking chair
Robotic walking chair
12/03/2003 03:50 PMJapanese researchers at Waseda University and manufacturer Tmsuk have
built a prototype two-legged robotic walking chair which can carry a
person and walk up and down stairs. Sort of reminds us of the iBot
3000, that motorized wheelchair invented by Dean Kamen (i.e. Mr.
Segway) that can also climb up and down stairs. Though without the
wheels, obviously. Anyway, a working model of the WL-16 could hit the
market within a few years. Read [Via The Red Ferret Journal]...
walking around passport control
walking around passport control

I'm at an airport lounge in Frankfurt Airport and just had a weird
experience. There was a huge line and passport control to get into the
terminal with my departure gate for my next flight. I decided to go to
the lounge. It was sort of a long walk, but when I arrived and asked
how to get to my gate, they said it was around the corner - with no
security or passport control. Somehow I just "walked around" the
passport control.
Now I realize that this is inter-terminal passport control so I
have no idea what sort of border it represents, but being able to walk
around it seems a bit weird to me...

If you're selling
special shoes that allow the wearers to walk on water, perhaps it is
not the best idea to say you have "drowned a lot of money" in your
company. I don't know, just doesn't seem to conjure images of great
success. Then again, neither do the WaveWalk pontoon shoes, a device
for which Mr. Yoav Rosen -- inspired by stories of hydrophobic mystics
throughout the ages -- has received US Patent number 6,764,363.

he set out walking one Saturday. He wanted to cross the Los Angeles
River on 6th Street. He thought he'd take in a stretch of Whittier
Boulevard. He figured he'd then head to the industrial city of Vernon
and wind up at its last wigwag, an old-time railroad signal.
