Real-World Hyperlinks Via Mobile Phone 05/05/2004 06:33 PM

UPDATED Semacode "allows any person with access to a computer to tag their local and urban environment, and anyone with a cellphone to read those tags and follow the virtual links." Very, very interesting... I should have realized -- the SmartMobs folks had this months ago. It's still cool.

Physical World Hyperlinks

Physical World Hyperlinks 04/15/2005 05:59 PM
While the cell phone is changing society at many levels, the most fundamental change is yet to come. This is when our phones start to bridge the physical and the digital worlds, to enrich our lives in ways we can currently only guess at. Just as hyperlinks allowed the web to fulfil its potential, physical world hyperlinks read by our cell phones, will take the role of technology to a whole new level in our lives.

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Last month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the online game Second Life had decided that players own any intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad idea, since it basically took all of the problems of our intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world - where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James Grimmelmann, has been thinking a lot about that very idea and has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading - discussion about intellectual property issues as it relates to games. It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in the real world should apply.

Semacode

Semacode 05/06/2004 01:38 AM

This looks totally coolio.

Don Park writes about it - as well.

Semacode.

semacode Real life URLs? The image to your left is “semacode”. Looks fuzzy, but if ‘snapped’ with a Series 60 based phone (such as the Nokia 6600), and provided the right software is installed, it’ll take you right to http://www.jluster.org.

Imagine the possibilities – URLs on merchandise, URLs on flyers, URLs on toilet paper. Well, we already have that – but machine readable? A while ago, I tried a similar application for the Palm, which read UPC codes and, if found in an online database, redirected the Palm’s browser to the URL in question. Semacode takes this a step further, removing the need for a centralized database.

semacode2
Possible applications, some of which already exist, include nextBus, a public transit tracking system, or linking ones vCard via a semacode on businesscards. Once scanned, the phone should download the vCard and insert it into the phone application. Groovy.

Come next week, I should print the semacode snippet on my business cards :). Another idea, we had, was to plaster Los Gatos with Semacode stickers pointing towards open wireless networks, coffee shops, and the best place to hang out after dark. Hey, if you feel frisky, why not add your personal partner preferences to a website and wear a semacode T-Shirt? :)

Semacode Gets More Attention

Semacode Gets More Attention 05/18/2004 03:04 PM
There's been a lot of buzz lately about Semacode, a new system to create barcode-like markers that can be inter preted by a camera phone photo to provide more information. The idea isn't particularly new. In fact, we've written about similar things a few times before. What is new is that this system is open - which may be both good and bad. There is still the "empty room" problem of getting such semacodes out there. A better way to launch such a product would be to build into the Semacode system a way to read regular product barcodes. Then, suddenly you have a pre-filled arena where Semacode software would be useful. If, on top of this, people could then create their own Semacodes it seems more likely to catch on. Still, once again, this is another example of why people trashing camera phones have missed the point. It's not about being a camera, but about how that camera is connected and that lets you do something different. You can't "get more info" about a product using a regular camera.

Real world semantics

Real world semantics 02/18/2004 09:32 AM
At ETech (which I unfortunately could not attend) there was a presentation entitled real world semantics that is close in spirit to my own recent experimentation. The presenters were Technorati's Kevin Marks and Tantek Celik, who fought the good fight to bring quality CSS support to Microsoft's now-abandoned MSIE/Mac. Phrases they use to define real world semantics: "emerging semantic (x)html", "adoption by 'real people'", "beyond academics and theoretical discussions." Exactly. ...

London-based music business magazine Five Eight has published an article by Magnatune founder John Buckman titled Using the Creative Commons in the Real World in which Buckman explains how he chose to use a CC license for his record label.

Also, Buckman in response to a question on his blog regarding source material:

I'm in the process of consolidating all the various individual tracks we've received, to make a "remix sources" page at Magnatune, so you can easily find them all, and create new, interesting works.

Keep up the good work John!

IST has published a new article on the Bayesian Inspired Brain and Artefacts project (BIBA), which is part of NEURO-iT, a European Union Future and Emerging Technologies Initiative. The goal of BIBA is to produce artefacts that are capable of using Bayesian probabilistic logic to "understand and implement life-like behavioral coordination". To state their goal in more understandable terms, they intend to make robots that can act on incomplete data just like humans and other animals can. To this end they have constructed BIBA Bot, a robot equipped with cameras, a SICK LMS and IR sensors. BIBA Bot will initially demonstrate insect-level intelligence similar to that of an ant but researcher hope to eventually achieve mammal-level intelligence equal to that of a dog.

Picking a Real World Release Dates

Picking a Real World Release Dates 11/12/2002 09:37 AM
I've worked in big software companies, teeny tiny small software companies and worked with software companies all over the globe. And one thing remains constant: we all screw up release dates with the regularity of snow at the North Pole. I have to think that a big part of it is that managers fail to take into account one simple thing:

I'm a person first. A worker second.
