Though the graphics on this project probably reveal the author's
personal positions on the President, it is pretty cool that someone
went to the trouble of creating an audio archive
of every speech President George W Bush has made publicly. They're
available for download as mp3, or you can get all 10 Gb of audio on
three DVDs from the site.
It'd be cool if the Library of Congress
site had this level of detail on all presidents, but this will do
for now. They're even throwing a little music
remix contest based on the speeches.

Categorizing with spaces
Categorizing with spaces
03/06/2004 02:05 AMJon Udell's been paying a lot of attention recently to categorizing
XHTML elements. Two of his readers suggested that he use the class
attribute, delimiting the categories (if necessary) with spaces; this
is also valid CSS. I'm in favor of it as well, as it has worked well
for me in two other circumstances. At del.icio.us/crysflame, I keep a
notebook of interesting links. Each link has several pieces of
metadata; of interest is the tags field. The content of this field is
a space-delimited list of categories, so to speak; a blog post about
Google's IPO would be assigned "blog business", while a paper about
graphing social dynamics would get "science social math". It's worked
out very well for me, so far; I can find things easily enough by
selecting individual tags, though more complex slices of the data
aren't...

MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme
MSN Spaces Supports Feed URI Scheme
04/08/2005 03:26 PMDare Obasanjo reports that MSN Spaces now supports
"one-click subscription" via the feed URI scheme (aka: "feed
:// protocol"). According to Mike Torres:
"Clicking on the orange RSS button or the "Syndicate"
link above will no longer spit out raw XML to your readers using a
modern browser. Instead, they will see a "pretty printed" RSS feed
with a link to learn more, subscribe in My MSN, or subscribe in an
aggregator supporting one-click subscription
(feed://)."
In other words, readers of any of the 4.5 million
MSN Spaces blogs can now simply click a feed link to subscribe to the
feed in FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator, Shrook, RSS Bandit,
NewzCrawler, Sharpreader or any other RSS reader which support the
feed URI scheme. Very nice!

In 1999, the World
Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee looked back on the previous
decade and lamented: “I wanted the Web to be what I call an
interactive space where everybody can edit. And I started saying
‘interactive,’ and then I read in the media that the Web was great
because it was ‘interactive,’ meaning you could click. This was
not what I meant by interactivity.” That vision of a genuinely
interactive environment rather than “a glorified television
channel”—one in which people not only would browse pages but also
would edit them as part of the process—did not disappear with the
rise of the read-only Web browser.1 It’s churning away more actively
than ever, in a vivid and chaotic Web-within-the-Web, via an anarchic
breed of pages known as “wikis.”. This has been added to my Wikis
section in Bots, Blogs and News
Aggregators web page.

Superior Performance in Tight Spaces

American Sensor Technologies, Inc. offers a low-cost, high-quality OEM
pressure sensor built to address applications with tight space
restrictions and requirements for high accuracy, trouble-free
operation and long life. Measuring just 0.875 inches in diameter, the
AST4100 Pressure Sensor offers superior performance within the tight
confines of refrigeration systems, test stands and data loggers. The
stainless steel construction of the header and housing makes it ideal
for use in the corrosive environments of gas panels as well as within
energy/water management applications (pump and tank monitoring). The
pressure sensors also serve the automotive industry as integral
components of test equipment and aftermarket pressure regulators.

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow:
Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big
public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with
public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to
photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted
sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing
Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their
tax-dollars bought.
If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor
sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then
demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this
guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for
scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase
contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town
on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement
officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human
venality I've heard of all day.
The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by
the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works,
especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that
artist.
