Across the great divide
09/04/2004 09:18 PM

I first pointed to this stunning
Valdis Krebs infographic
back in March
2004, when the New York Times published it. Krebs has long been
fascinated with the clusters that emerge from an analysis of Amazon's
related-purchase data. I was reminded of his chart the other day when
I heard
this
exchange (Real, 1 min, 40 sec) between Terri Gross and Norman
Podhoretz, which includes this quote:
I have almost no friends any longer who are liberal, and I suspect
this is true of most people on both sides of the divide. Since the
sixties, the polarization has become more intense, and there are fewer
and fewer friendships that can be sustained across the divide in this
country.
What religious differences used to be, and aren't any more (in our
world, not the Muslim world), political differences have become.
They've acquired a kind of religious intensity, and are tinged with a
kind of intolerance that used to characterize religious differences.
[Norman
Podhoretz, inteviewed by Terri Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, Real, 20
min.)
Having lived on both sides of the chasm -- he was a radical liberal
before he became a founder of neoconservativism -- Podhoretz seems to
have a rare appreciation of the great divide. I suspect the majority
of us, not having lived on both sides, lack that same gut-level
appreciation.

On the Great Atlantic Divide

On
the Great Atlantic Divide Published on Sunday, October 26, 2003 by
TomDispatch.com. By Susan Sontag.
I came across this piece at
dailyKos
"Two weeks ago during the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Association of
German Publishers and Booksellers awarded the Friedenspreis des
Deutschen Buchhandels (the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade) to
Susan Sontag. She was cited for standing up for "the dignity of
free thinking" and for her role as an "intellectual
ambassador" between the United States and Europe. The
association's director Dieter Schormann commented, "In a world of
false images and distorted truths, she defends the honor of free
thought." In its over half-century of existence, the
Friedenspreis Prize has been awarded to Chinua Achebe, Max Frisch,
Jurgen Habermas, Yehudi Menuhin, and Vaclav Havel among many others.
An excerpt from Susan Sontag's acceptance speech was published today
in the Los Angeles Times Book Review section, but I thought the whole
speech, which focuses on the increasingly embattled relationship
between Europe and the United States, or rather between much of
Europe, especially the various peoples of Europe, and the Bush
administration, was well worth reproducing as a whole. Near its end is
a rare moment in which Sontag considers an aspect of her early life in
public. Her most recent book, by the way, is Regarding the Pain of
Others. What follows then, with her kind permission, is her full
acceptance speech. (The title and subheads are, however, mine.) Tom

The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
03/21/2003 12:14 AM The Los Angeles Times goes
multimedia. For the past few weeks, the LA Times has begun a
significant push into offering video, audio, and interactive Flash on
their website. One of the most interesting aspects is that the paper
has moved one step beyond simply replaying AP Television clips as many
sites have done; the LA Times writers are stand before the cameras and
microphones themselves and report stories in a stuttering,
non-hairsprayed, introverted demeanor that I find very refreshing,
though so far I have gleaned very little additional information from
it. When does (or can) this mode of journalism on the web rise above
gimmickry or 'just because we can' and add value to a written article?
Can video/tv news rise above mere spectacle?

MCI For Sale
MCI For Sale
09/20/2004 01:24 PMIt looks like MCI's turnaround plan hasn't turned it around far
enough. Reports are out this morning that
the company is actively looking for a buyer. The company
pretty much stopped doing very much at all for an extended period of
time while they had to deal with all those pesky accounting scam
problems. Now that they have their head above water, they're
realizing that the tide has pushed them far, far away from where the
rest of the telecom world is. While the article speculates that they
may have trouble selling themselves, that might not be the case. The
now-out-of-bankrupt company has a (hopefully) clean set of books,
plenty of customers, and a network that many other companies already
drool over. The one area that they probably should just jettison,
though, is their consumer business -- or at least pull an
AT&T
move and focus only on VoIP. Of course, just like AT&T, MCI made
the bizarre move to
ditch their
wireless play when having a foot in the wireless market was
clearly in their long-term best interests.

Mobinote DVX-POD On Sale (Just Not Here)
Mobinote DVX-POD On Sale (Just Not Here)
08/16/2004 02:28 PM
The Mobinote DVX-Pod 7010 is one sale from at least
one Taiwanese retailer, it seems. For $19,000 Taiwanese New Dollars
(about $585), you can take one of the stark white hard disk video
players with a 7-inch screen firmly into your hands. Both hands, I'm
saying, and with a tight grip. Because it's big, you see. Quite large.
Very big.
Hefty.
But the thing is, even though I am a Champion of Small - see
today's earlier comments about the Gmini 400, for instance - the
DVX-Pod 7010 does a lot of things right, like having a high-resolution
screen (720 by 480 pixels) and built-in PVR functions. It won't fit in
your pocket, unless you're some sort of man mountain, but it's not
pretending otherwise, either, and that goes a long way.
Will it ever stop (in the US)? Yo, I don't know. (Thanks,
Ben!)
