A Collection of Conundrums...

A Collection of Conundrums... 12/09/2003 05:00 PM

How to talk about thoughts about work (in public) that I need to articulate and work through a bit without said thoughts taking on a political dimension - feeling like part of some attempt to game social reality. How to deal with personal frustrations (or let those frustrations go) without projecting perceived inadequacies onto other people. How to reconcile the satisfaction of a work that will result in something made with the desire to work on a subject that you're passionate about. How to know when one is doing that. How to think about what's next without sorting out what is. How to handle the frustrations of watching other people do work in places where you used to be the only person who cared. How do deal with people communicating things you want to communicate but didn't think you should. How to not sound shrill and callous and vengeful and bloody. How to not sound desperate and flighty and trivial and fake. How to tell whether your impression of things is a lie or not.

These being an adequate representation of the conundrums I find myself dealing with on a Tuesday evening, because it would of course be too much for me to scratch out any kind of mental peace.

My head, unfortunately, is far from in the position to do its best thinking. My blood feels like it has thickened to the consistency of thick pressurised loam, to be forced at pressure through brain-flesh, capillary and straining vein. Mental clarity is unlikely to be found in such a state. So I shall have a bath and go to bed. In the meantime: Conundrum vs. Conundra.

The Jawa Collection

The Jawa Collection 12/10/2003 09:06 PM
I thought I was crazy when I started up my R2-D2 character focus collecting. I figured by choosing such a well known character there would always be something to find when the modern stuff was running low on the pegs. Tonight I ran across a page by Chris Nichols that is all about his character focus on Jawas. I never imagined there could be so much to go after with that one specific character! I loved looking at all the different pieces he's added to his collection over the years. Be sure to stop by and check it out, it is a truly amazing collection of "those discusting creatures" as Threepio put it! Do you have a character focus going in your collection? Have it archived on a website? Email me the details!

Naropa Collection

Naropa Collection 06/14/2004 07:43 PM

The writings of William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg may be amongst the most important in the 20th Century but the sound of Burroughs' growl and the haunting lilt in Ginsberg's recitals that have compelled turntablists to use samples of their speaking voices. Sampling pioneers and Ninjatune entrepreneurs Jonathan More and Matt Black (a.k.a. Coldcut) have used Burroughs and Ginsberg for a while and continues to do so.

Thanks to the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics from Naropa University, you can hear hundreds of hours of lectures and readings by Burroughs, Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Amiri Baraka and others all of which have been posted to the Archive as part of the Naropa Collection. As of this writing there are 147 (!) uploads to the stunning collection.

Burroughs is of special interest since it was his exploration of assembling fragments of writings and audio tape (what he called "cut-ups") in the 1960's and 70's that lead directly to follow-up projects by Brian Eno, David Bowie, Plunderphonics and hence the mainstreaming of tape sampling as a music genre. His 1976 lecture at the Kerouac School should be required listening as a background on cut-ups.

Of course the lectures are of invaluable literary value. Burroughs and others delve deep into their personal relationships with various works of literature ranging from Conrad to Fitzgerald, Wordsworth to Whitman.

And finally there is the sheer entertainment value of many of these uploads. For example, you don't want to miss Ginsberg reading the complete "Howl.".

The entire Naropa Collection is licensed under a Attribution-NonDerivs-NonCommerical license.

How many languages in your music

How many languages in your music
collection?
06/17/2005 03:29 PM

I'm not what you would call a fan of world music, but I just counted the number of languages used in my music collection and came up with nine:

  • English - Most of the songs
  • Spanish - Manu Chao, Pixies, others...
  • French - Manu Chao, Amelie soundtrack, Dealership, others...
  • Japanese - Yoshinori Sunahara
  • Portuguese - Seu Jorge (his Bowie covers from The Life Aquatic)
  • Icelandic - Sigur Ros
  • German - Nena (99 Luftballoons), Kraftwerk
  • Latin - Chant (you know, that ubiquitous Gregorian chants CD from the mid-90s)
  • Galician - Mano Chao

Seems like there should be some Italian in there as well, but I can't find any right now. And I didn't count Hopelandic, which is a made-up language that Sigur Ros uses in some of their songs. How many languages can you find in your music collection? Post your list or a link to your blog post in the comments.

Final Transmet collection available

Final Transmet collection available 04/17/2004 01:02 AM
The final Transmetropolitan collection, "Transmetropolitan: One More Time," is available for pre-order on Amazon. It's the tenth book, collecting issues 55-60: there are nine other books collecting the earlier issues, and as good as those issues were, it's in this, the final volume of the most original and invigorating sf comic I've ever read, that Ellis outdoes himself, pulling together a finale to his five-year serial that's triumphant, sad and brave. When the last issue came out, I wrote a Wired review of it -- and rereading it today reminds me of just how exciting it was to get a new Transmet ish at the comic-shop. It was Transmet that turned me into a comics reader again: I'm so glad that the whole series is now available for sale. Link (Thanks, Pat!)
