“Intel is trying to make the case that a collection of chips
is worth more than the sum of its parts. The chipmaker presented its
argument in several ways on Tuesday. For one, Intel said it has seen a
benefit in marketing several chips together, as it has done with
Centrino, its bundle of technology for wireless notebook PCs. Speaking
at the Intel Developer Forum here, Intel President Paul Otellini said

are). Advances Make Car-Sharing Easy BOSTON — When I moved to

HP Decides On Anti-Consumer Strategy
HP Decides On Anti-Consumer Strategy
01/09/2004 09:50 PMWhile most of the focus on HP today comes from the
HPod/
iPod announcement, there were a few other interesting stories.
I've been hearing from folks at CES that Carly Fiorina's keynote was a
doozy, in that it lined up supporters from the music industry who
spent all their time bashing kids downloading music. Reports are now
coming out talking about
HP's
anti-consumer rights stance on these things. Once again, all of
these features
do not make things better for consumers - they
just make things worse. At the same time, it will do nothing to slow
down real piracy - as those folks will just get around the copy
protection. So, what we're left with is an offering that is less
friendly to consumers, more costly to HP (and, therefore, consumers),
and does nothing to help anyone. The other "word from the floor" we
heard at CES is that HP employees in the same room as the keynote even
agreed that this policy was bad news, and were upset that their
employer had decided to go with such an anti-consumer stance.
Meanwhile, Tristan Lewis writes in to point out that the bigger news,
buried in HP's announcements today is
a
bout their Lightscribe offering, which will let DVD and CD burners
silkscreen images directly onto the CD. While I'm not sure I agree
with Tristan's assessment that this is a bigger story than the iPod
deal, it is a cool idea.
Update: As pointed out in the
comments, Tristan's description goes a bit further than the actual
product: it doesn't actually do silkscreening, but creates "silkscreen
quality labels".

Samsung Shows Off 2Gb DDR2 DRAMs
Samsung Shows Off 2Gb DDR2 DRAMs
09/21/2004 06:41 AMSamsung Electronics announced the industry’s first 2Gb DDR2 SDRAM
utilizing 80nm process technology. The high density DDR2 solution will
enhance server and workstation performance and enable faster
deployment of memory intensive applications like real time video
conference, remote medical service, two-way communications, and 3-D
graphics. “Samsung developed the DDR2 SDRAM using an advanced 80nm
process technology, overcoming the industry expectations that 2Gb DRAM
manufacture would require sub 65nm circuitry,” Samsung said in the
statement.
The new DRAM technology breakthroughs include a 3D transistor
technology, recess channel array transistor (RCAT), and a new concept
architecture process. First introduced 2003, RCAT is a technology
unique to Samsung that reduces transistor area space by implementing a
3-D structural design, increasing the integration level for higher
density on a given area. To address the high performance features of
the DDR2 specification, Samsung adopted a double poly gate technology,
20-angstrom level ultra thin oxide film process, and a triple-layer
metal circuitry. The high speed process technology coupled with the
feasible 80nm technology also advances the time-to-market availability
of the new DDR2 device.
