Floppy RAID

Floppy RAID

Floppy RAID 05/07/2004 04:23 PM

I love the idea of building RAIDs out of floppy drives -- I just with this guy had built a BIGGER RAID. If he'd clustered 256 old iMacs with four floppy drives each, he would have had a gigabyte floppy RAID -- all the power and reliability of a Jaz cartridge, in a package that fills a roller-rink. In fact, you could employ kids on roller-blades (like Kozmo did!) to wheel around the shelves, replacing dud floppies with fresh ones. Link (via MeFi)

The Floppy is Dead

The Floppy is Dead 09/07/2004 09:48 PM

CNN is proclaiming the death of the floppy drive. If you ask me the floppy has been dead for some time now. Once it became easy to email attachments I all but forgot they even existed. I think the deciding factor for most people was probably the widespread use of USB drives and CDRs. Let's not forget the grief that Apple received for being the first company smart enough to eliminate the floppy drive when the iMac was introduced five years ago.

So what's next? What time tested piece of PC hardware is the next to go?

Floppy Disk Size

Floppy Disk Size 05/13/2004 04:57 PM

Floppy disk: From Wikipedia we get the reason 5 1/4" floppy disks were that size.

After meeting in a bar in Boston, Adkisson asked Wang what size he thought the disks should be, and Wang pointed to a napkin and said "about that size". Adkisson took the napkin back to California, found it to be 5¼ inches wide (13 cm), and developed a new drive of this size storing 110 KB.

A great and informative article all-around.

Today's Youth and Data Storage

"One of my friends told me a rather amusing story this afternoon. My friend's 8 year old sister came to visit her at college today, and stumbled upon a small stack of floppy disks in her room. She picked them up and asked my friend "What are these??" to which my friend had to explain what floppy disks are. After her explanation, her younger sister replied with "Oh, but I thought you could only store stuff on CDs, e-mail, and on your Palm Pilot." I guess many young children these days have started to recognize PDAs as a normal way to keep information, and don't recognize things such as floppy disks!" [Daily Palm]

Two floppy-based firewalls

Two floppy-based firewalls 03/14/2005 04:05 PM
When you look in your closet, do you see a pile of obsolete hardware that you just cannot bring yourself to throw out, despite the pleas of your family? If you want to share your home Internet connection and save a little money at the same time, dust off that old hardware and set up a Linux-based firewall. All you need is a 486 or better processor, two network adapters (only one if you're on dial-up), a switch or hub, diskette drive, and 12MB of RAM. In this article, we'll take a look at floppyfw and Coyote Linux, two free, open source projects that have shrunk Linux down to diskette size to implement a firewall.

Time For The Floppy Keyboard

Time For The Floppy Keyboard 02/10/2004 01:27 PM
The "floppy disk" is a thing of the past, but the floppy keyboard may be a thing of the future. The Inquirer is running a review of a foldable, floppy keyboard that they claim works pretty well - assuming you've placed it on a flat surface for typing. The biggest benefit (or downside, depending on your point of view) is the attention such a keyboard gets you from those who don't believe it could possibly work. Now, the next trick will be for them to split the keyboard in two, add some straps so that you can put half a keyboard on each thigh, and you'll have a keyboard in your lap. Add in a small computer you can stick in your pocket and the new display goggles/glasses that are hitting the market, and you've got quite the (yes, very very geeky) wearable computer - with a full sized keyboard.

iomagic_datastation.jpg LogoDespite what you might expect, I think this is great: a USB external floppy drive that doubles a 7-in-1 media card reader from I/O Magic. I figure, though, that for the few people that actually still need a stinky old format like 3.5" should have to pay the extra $70 for it so the rest of us can leave them our of our PCs for good. I have a floppy drive in this box, but it's not even hooked up. I just leave it there to remind me I am enjoying a floppyless life.

Coyote Linux is a single floppy distribution for setting up network utility services such as Internet connection sharing, firewalling, or wireless access points. The goal of the Coyote project is to make it as quick and easy as possible to set up a Linux floppy, and to require a minimal amount of Linux knowledge to do so.

Changes:
This release fixes disconnect problems with the PPPoE support and has several Web admin updates.

Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools 3.5
(Default branch)

Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools 3.5
(Default branch)
03/29/2005 07:05 AM
The Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools are software for the Catweasel MK1 ISA and Catweasel MK3 PCI universal floppy disk controllers. cw2dmk will read several kinds of floppy disk, some of which ordinary PC controllers have trouble with, and save them in the DMK disk image format (used by the Unix TRS-80 emulator xtrs and David Keil's TRS-80 emulator for MS-DOS). cw2dmk can also handle (at least) any disk written using a Western Digital 177x/179x floppy disk controller, a PC-style NEC765-compatible controller, or a Digital Equipment Corporation RX02 controller. dmk2cw will write any DMK image back to a floppy, handling the same kinds of disks as cw2dmk. jv2dmk and dmk2jv3 convert images between DMK and the older JV1 and JV3 formats without requiring Catweasel hardware. It runs on Linux and MS-DOS.
Changes:
This version fixes a few obscure bugs.

MIB MP-308 In-Car Cigarette Light USB
Flash Drive FM Transmitter (Whew!)
07/30/2004 09:56 AM

mib_incar.jpg imageI sent the intern out for ice, and he decided to go to college. Fortunately, he goofs off in class, too, and found me this really swank in-car cigarette-lighter USB flash drive MP3 adapter thingy. The idea is this: you plug in the MP-308 to your lighter, for power. You plug your USB flash drive (up to 1GB) into the MP-308 for data. You press play, and the device broadcasts your MP3s via FM transmitter to your stereo via one of seven selectable stations. I love it; it's brilliant, if a little pricy -- somewhere in the $120 range -- but it would be perfect for someone with a surfeit of flash drives already.
