"Number portability" began in November for parts of the country, but on Monday it will be available throughout the nation. Millions of cellular phone users are about to discover that when they switch companies they can keep their number, but a new phone will be required. One company offers consumers an easy way to get rid of old cell phones and get paid cash for doing it. [PRWEB May 21, 2004]

Bullet Trains

Bullet Trains 01/04/2004 12:23 AM

Japan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all excited. They mentioned this one.

The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph (361 mph)...

Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart). But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much faster if you ran into something.

It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175 mp.h.

I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed, that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight and Tom Cruise get into a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?

The Dying Art of Bullet Making

The Dying Art of Bullet Making 06/24/2005 07:07 PM

Who knew that bullet making was quickly becoming an old fashioned activity? I you want a low tech how-to, this one’s for you: “Like darning socks, making bullets is a dying art. Used to be just about everyone with a need for ammo poured their own, using iron or even wooden molds. These days only a few diehard hobbyists still do it, and they use aluminum molds. But even fewer people still make silver bullets….

The difference between throwing a bullet

The difference between throwing a bullet
and shooting it out of a gun
05/18/2004 01:24 AM

I've started trying to exercise more regularly for the past couple weeks, going for a 12 mile, hilly bike ride 3 times a week. Today I did my ride with a decent average speed and finished it in the shortest time yet. The loop I ride has a couple 10% grades in it and I do about 250ft of climbing through it. I was walking around the house today feeling pretty cocky about my progress when I sat down to watch one of my current favorite shows, The Lance Chronicles.

On tonight's episode they followed Lance Armstrong through his european training. One of his regular rides was a 4 1/2 hour, 30 mile climb from the flats high into the mountains, going straight up. It turns out he climbs over 13,000ft in that single ride. When I was in marathon shape, I did a few hikes where I would gain about 6,000ft in a single day from basecamp to summit, and Lance is doing more than twice that. As a training ride.

I'm thinking he's a shoe-in for this year's Tour.

daily_dispatch_hijack.jpg imageAndré Steyn is a lucky man with a good attitude. While driving his truck near Johannesburg, South Africa, Steyn was attacked by hijackers who took a pot shot at him in an attempt to, you know, blow his brains out. Fortunately for him, he was talking on his Nokia handset, which didn't save his hand but managed to catch the bullet that would have otherwise ended up in his brain. Steyn swerved, ran the attacker off the road, and now jokingly adds that future anonymous hijackers should watch out: his new phone has a camera. (Thanks, Teemu!)

In South Africa, a man talking on his mobile phone while driving a truck was attacked by gunmen who shot at him. The bullet ripped through his hand, but was stopped from entering his head by the mobile phone. Next thing you know they'll need to start offering Kevlar-based phones.

Does The RIAA's Silver Bullet Break

Does The RIAA's Silver Bullet Break
Wiretap Laws?
07/14/2004 06:35 AM
The RIAA has been running around the halls of Congress showing off Audible Magic as the "silver bullet" against file sharers. Audible Magic is a system that claims to be able to identify and stop file sharing of unauthorized files in its tracks. While some have accused the product of being vaporware, it certainly is getting plenty of attention. The EFF has taken a quick look and pointed out that for all the hype, there are some simple workarounds that would make Audible Magic ineffective very quickly. However, Ernest Miller raises an even more important question: does Audible Magic violate wiretap laws? After all, it's intercepting communications without the users' knowledge. He goes through the various exceptions and points out that Audible Magic doesn't seem to apply at all. Thus, it likely is an illegal wiretap. The one way to make it "legal" is if consent is somehow given beforehand. Then, of course, the problems get worse, because you've basically had someone agree to have all of their internet traffic open for snooping. Seems like an awful lot of effort for technology that doesn't even work.

What's My Line? — Live On Stage! continues to get better and better, and I'm running out of ways to blog about how much fun I had on the stage, and how much the audience enjoyed the show . . . so I'm not even going to try this week. I'll just settle on: IT WAS AWESOME. If you're anywhere near Hollywood on a night that we're doing the show, you simply must come out and see us.

Tonight, my friend Drew Curtis (who is responsible for Fark) and I will be in studio together on The David Lawrence Show from 8pm until 10pm PST. We'll take phone calls and instant messages, and I can't wait to see what happens when the worlds of Fark and WWdN collide on the radio. It's going to be supermegaawesome. There are several different listening options at the show's website.
