Open Records are for Terrorists 05/07/2004 02:46 PM

Open Source has a lot in common with Terrorists. Both "groups" are decentralized, made of many sub-groups, and pretty much do what they want to do, believe what they want to believe, and are quite fluid in nature. Nobody knows how many people are part of the Open Source community. Nobody knows how many terrorists there are. Both groups are spread all over the world. Nobody speaks for the whole Open Source community, just as nobody speaks for all terrorists....

Who, exactly, are the terrorists?

Who, exactly, are the terrorists? 07/15/2004 05:33 PM
Iraqi women beg to be killed as American soldiers sodomize their children (link is an .rm file, the bit about mothers and children starts about 1:31), according to journalist Seymour Hersh who reports seeing unrele ased footage from Abu Ghraib. The question remains unanswered as to why he'll talk about it in a speech, but not publish it in the New Yorker. It's also worth asking, if these allegations are true, who else has seen this footage and why is it not being reported?

Terrorists Arrive in Miami!
A little-noticed but chilling scene at Opa-locka Airport outside Miami last month demonstrates that the Bush administration's commitment to fighting international terrorism can be overtaken by presidential politics — even if that means admitting known terrorists onto U.S. soil.
There are other terrorists that the US government welcomes. I challenge you to name them (hint: Cuban origins for one). What is that smell? Are we fighting terrorism or Islam?

This post is completely self-interested. I fly a lot. I think the idea of having air marshals on board airplanes is sensible and notably increases my safety. I was horrified and astounded to read in the NYT today that these guys have a dress code that make them stand out so that anyone can spot them. There are no words to describe the lethal stupidity at work here.

In a disgraceful decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has held that the detainees at the American base at Guantánamo Bay have no right to any due process or any relief from the judicial system. The ruling is based on the legal fiction that Guantánamo Bay is sovereign Cuban territory -- if that were actually true, the United States would have been expelled by the Cubans a long time ago. I predict that this set of rulings will come to be be seen as the Dred Scott rulings of the 21st century. The prisoners, most of whom have been in pens for over a year, remain officially "disappeared." They are not Prisoners of War, even though some of them were fighting with the government of Afghanistan, because that would confer too many rights on them. And they are not charged with criminal acts, because we don't have evidence that would stand up in a court of law. As the NYT said in an editorial today, they held incommunicado, in legal limbo, indefinitely. Everybody is entitled to have their claims heard by an impartial party. As the NYT suggests, it doesn't have to be the same rules and formality as the U.S civilian court system, but there have to be some rules, some process, and an impartial judge. Otherwise, it is tyranny. Power corrupts. This is not the American way. This is totally at odds with our traditions. If we let America act this way, the terrorists have won. They have turned us, into them.

VP Cheney in cahoots with terrorists? 09/07/2004 09:57 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Vice President Cheney is making bizarre threats about a possible terrorist attack unless he and President Bush are relected.
Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday warned Americans about voting for Democratic Sen. John Kerry, saying that if the nation makes the wrong choice on Election Day it faces the threat of another terrorist attack.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States," Cheney told about 350 supporters at a town-hall meeting in this Iowa city.

Philippine Bows to Terrorists

Philippine Bows to Terrorists 07/12/2004 09:03 PM

First Spain and now Philippine.  Are they out of their minds?  At least South Korea managed to hold steady despite all the noise from the selfish peace and justice loving liberals.  They are selfish because they are ruining the country to satisfy their emotional and ideological needs.

I believe that the war against Iraq was unjustified but it's insane to give in to terrorists' demands regardless of circumstances.  Even if Philippine was going to pull out troops anyway, it should have waited to avoid appearing as if they were pulling out because of the terrorist's demands.

As to saving the lives of kidnap victims, I wonder what the Philippine government would have done if the terrorism and kidnapping took place within Philippine?  Give in?Rewarding terrorists will only encourage more terrorism.  What will they do when terrorists start popping up everyewhere because terrorism offers better result than demonstrations?  What?  Tell them to stand in a line so you can service them properly?

Is a civilian's life more sacred than a solder's life?  Bullshit.  On war against terrorism, everyone is on the frontline.  I am on the frontline of war against terrorism alongside my 10 year old son, my wife, my parents, my friends, and collegues.  We are fighting in our homes, neighborhoods, freeways, shopping malls, restaurants.  And the war is on 24 hours a day every day.  Terrorism can step in anywhere and any time if they think they can scare people into giving them what they want.

Giving in to terrorist demands, even if it's just for an ice cream cone or a few dollars, amounts to feeding a beast that can breed like rats.  Giving in to demands of terrorists far away amounts to thinking that one can run away from terrorism.  What a silly idea.  It's as silly as trying to build a wall around Middle East or banning Islamic religion.

Adam McGaughey, the owner of a Stargate fansite has been slapped with criminal charges (Criminal Copyright Infringement and Trafficking in Counterfeit Services) after being reported to the FBI by the MPAA for including Amazon links to encourage fans to purchase DVDs of the show. To build its case, the FBI invoked a provision of the USA Patriot Act to obtain financial records from his ISP. And, since he "conspired" with thousands of fans worldwide by providing these Amazon Market links, he could be facing up to 20 years in jail if the government invokes RICO.

I have been pulled aside for special searches four out of the previous four times I've flown. Yesterday I asked the supervisor at the US Air desk at Logan Airport about it. He said that if you test positive for any two of the following three tests, the computer marks you for searching: A one way ticket, a ticket purchased in the past 24 hours, or paying by cash. On this particular trip, I met the first two criteria. Thus, I am a likely terrorist. So, here's a word of advice to today's would-be terrorist: Splurge on the round-trip. Sure,...

File Sharing Helps Terrorists

File Sharing Helps Terrorists 04/30/2004 04:57 AM
A few months ago, some entertainment industry folks floated the idea that file sharing "helped terrorists" because certain groups that were suspected of funding terrorist operations had ties to counterfeiting gangs. That was quite a stretch, but now the US Army is pointing out that file sharing might actually help terrorists if it's done by soldiers out in the field. It appears that American soldiers, far away from home, are trying to download the latest music via file sharing networks. Unfortunately, in some of these areas, bandwidth is a lot more scarce, and having it eaten up by people downloading the latest songs isn't helping matters. At the end, they also mention that, oh yeah, there's that whole copyright infringement thing - but the bandwidth issue is much more important.
