Boston-area bank suggestion? (Bank of
America is not dog-friendly)
06/22/2005 02:23 AMMy bank has been purchased, for about the fifth time.
Currently it is called "Bank of America." None of the previous
changes of ownership or name bothered me but this time the new color
scheme came with "no dogs allowed" signs in the front of every branch
office. I'm not sure that I can stomach 0.2% interest if I can't
have a dog at my side to provide some comfort as inflation and
corporate looters erode my turbine-powered helicopter fund.
Anyone have a suggestion for a dog-friendly bank in the Boston
area?

Canadian M&Ms
03/24/2005 08:27 PMSeems that Canadian collector’s are once more in for a treat, and I
don’t mean because we’ll be eating more M&M’s in the next month than
most people do in a lifetime. Unlike the American equivalents, It
looks like we won’t have to go out to find all Seventy-six different
packaging variations to get a complete set, at least judging by the
lack of a ‘Collect All 76!’ type of message on the bags. Judging by
image above that Canadian collector extraordinaire Scott Bradley sent
us, our assortment also lacks the foil that makes the American
counterpart shiny and desirable, but with the bilingual text and
alternate character placement the Canadian M&M’s have their own
reasons to shine!

from other British or British-derived countries should find much of
the introductory section ("The System") boring, as most British
Parliamentary systems tend to work about the same.

03/11/2003 01:59 PMMcPaper, of all places, has an article about how American travelers in
Europe are encountering strong anti-american sentiment. The article
has some amazing quotes, like: If the past 100 years were widely
considered the American Century, this new one is fast shaping up as
the Anti-American Century.... A mother lode of goodwill fostered in
the decades after the defeat of Nazi Germany has been reduced to dust
in recent years. "Man, it was bad," says the Rat Pack-y star of
Swingers. "These girls saw us and were kind of flirting, and they kept
asking us if we were American. Finally we said, 'Yes,' and they just
took off. " One girl turns and says, 'We were hoping you were
Canadian.' Canadian? Since when was it cooler to be Canadian?" I can
only hope that more Americans will travel overseas in the near future,
so they will understand the price that we are paying for Bush's
unilateralism and arrogance. The article concludes with: Tips for

Possible Canadian Card Variations?
Possible Canadian Card Variations?
03/28/2005 04:11 PMAs an odd twist, it appears that Canadian collectors may find a series
of card variations with the new
ROTS figures. Historically,
Canadian toys rarely see any variations even when they are
appropriate, and when a variation is discovered it is usually in super
low numbers. In terms of percentages, some Canadian variations are
produced in single digits, making production of them in the very low
thousands. That being said, Canadian collectors will have to scan the
isles with an eagle eye, as it appears that some figures are showing
up with the ‘action stickers’ on the blisters. At this time it is
uncertain if the figures in question will continue to have the
stickers throughout their entire run. Thanks goes to Rebelscum reader
Brian for the images.

Petition against the Canadian DMCA
Petition against the Canadian DMCA
04/23/2004 01:34 AMThere's a petition against Canada's proposed DMCA-like copyright law
up at the Digital Copyright Canada Wiki:
We, the undersigned residents of Canada draw attention of the House to
the following:
THAT the Copyright Act is properly recognised as being a careful
balance between the rights of creators and the rights of the public
(including viewers, readers and listeners);
THAT the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously affirmed this view in CCH
Canadian Ltd v Law Society of Upper Canada;
THAT digital technologies have recently given copyright holders the
ability to upset the balance in the Copyright Act by preventing
Canadians from accessing works for purposes that have been legally
granted to them;
THAT the creation of original works is nourished by wide accessibility
of earlier works, including a vibrant public domain;
THAT dissemination of cultural ideas requires that they be preserved
in a form that is accessible to future generations; and
THAT historically, consultations regarding changes to the Copyright
Act have mostly taken place with creators, intermediaries and only
some special users (such as educators and librarians)
THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to ensure generally
that users are recognised as interested parties and are meaningfully
consulted about proposed changes to the Copyright Act and to ensure in
particular that any changes at least preserve all existing users'
rights, including the right to use copyrighted materials under Fair
Dealing and the right to make private copies of audio recordings. We
further call upon Parliament not to extend the term of copyright; and
to recognise the right of citizens to personally control their own
communication devices.

Enterprises Still Pay More
Enterprises Still Pay More
02/01/2005 09:13 PM With consumer 802.11g costing below $70 for good gear, enterprise APs
still run you more than $400 with discounts: There is, of course, a
price premium you pay for devices that handle VLAN switching, multiple
broadcast SSIDs, and other enterprise-related features. But the
difference between the underlying silicon is pretty small (or
non-existent) these days. You're paying a large differential for
brand, service, support, integration, firmware, and the firmware's
hooks for management. And switch AP cost even more but provide more
flexibility, which should lessen server-room and management costs....

03/14/2005 05:46 PM The 802.1X protocol for authenticating users and restricting access
is starting to hit the big time: This long feature, which I wrote for
Mobile Pipeline, walks through how the 802.1X specification works, how
it can be secured, and what benefits it is bringing to businesses and
academic institutions that want to segregate traffic, control access,
and provide a high level of security to their wireless links. After
talking to vendors and customers, it's clear that all the pieces
needed to make 802.1X a consistently deployed, secure, successful
method of authentication are in place. Even better, 802.1X can secure
wired and wireless networks with equal ease, preventing rogue access
points, unauthorized Ethernet users, and even sticking virus-infected
legitimate users on special VLANs to solve their problems before they
hit the LAN....

Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises
Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises
05/23/2004 09:00 PMEnterprises are reacting sensibly to the issue of low-speed (20 Mbps
or slower) Wi-Fi interference techniques documented by Australian
researchers: It's not so much a flaw as a part of the spec that allows
a certain kind of attack to disable an access point; there are many
others of varying degree of severity, too, including just bringing an
unpleasant 2.4 GHz cordless phone into an office and leaving it turned
on without a connection to a cordless base station. The reaction cited
in this Computerworld article is sensible: managers are examining
their risk and noting that with many access points, an attacker would
have to attack numerous locations at once to have an effect, and would
then be vulnerable to physical detection. All 802.11a and any 802.11g
networks running at faster encodings (using OFDM) can't be attacked in
this fashion, either....

Actually on
11 May 2004, Matt Mower
IMed me that he and Paolo Valdemarin (both of evectors and k-collector fame) had
been talking about arranging a Social Networking for
Enterprises event in London.
They were inspired by the
fact that both Stowe Boyd and I are going to be in Nice, France to
present at the
iDate conference on 15-16 July 2004. Stowe and I had both,
separately, expressed our individual interests in getting together
with our EU cohort for some type of event.
Subsequently, on 18
May 2004, there was an IRC chat with a number of folksincluding
Matt Mower, Marc Canter, Martin Roell, Ross Mayfield (host of the Social
Tools for Enterprises Symposium Socialtext space), Paolo
Valdemarin, Lilia Efimova, Lee Bryant, Suw Charman, a number of
others, and myself. Since that daymany emails and IM chats
laterthis event has really begun to take shape. Largely thanks
to the un-flagging efforts of Matt Mower. Go Matt!
In London,
on 12 July 2004, there will be an event aimed to be a practical
get go for CxOs in Enterprises as to how social tools &
methods can help them with problems like insufficient collaboration,
low innovation and unmanaged risk according to some early
thoughts from Matt
