Since larger storage capacity technology has become available in every computer under the sun, the floppy drive has practically become an afterthought. Dell Computer Corp. stopped including a floppy drive in new computers in spring 2003, and Gateway Inc. has followed suit on some models. Floppies are available on request for $10 to $20 extra. For some, the habit is hard to break. "To some customers out there, it's like a security blanket," said Dell spokesman Lionel Menchaca. "Every computer they've ever had has had a floppy, so they still feel the need to order a floppy drive." "As long as we see customers request it, we'll continue to offer it," said Gateway spokeswoman Lisa Emard. "We'll be happy to move off the floppy once our customers are ready to make that move." Tarun Bhakta, president of Vision Computers outside Atlanta, one of the largest computer retailers in the South, added, "People say they want a floppy drive, and then I ask them, 'When was the last time you used it?' A lot of the time, they say, 'Never." Some people just like to hold onto their fond memories of technology gone by. "There's always some nostalgia," said Scott Wills, an electrical and computer engineering professor at Georgia Tech who has held on to an old 8-inch floppy disk. "It's a technology I'm glad to be rid of. I'd never label them, and I never knew what any of them were until I put them in and looked." Read full story... I love the idea of building RAIDs out of floppy drives -- I just with
this guy had built a BIGGER RAID. If he'd clustered 256 old iMacs with
four floppy drives each, he would have had a gigabyte floppy RAID --
all the power and reliability of a Jaz cartridge, in a package that
fills a roller-rink. In fact, you could employ kids on roller-blades
(like Kozmo did!) to wheel around the shelves, replacing dud floppies
with fresh ones.

NVIDIA RAID Driver, How ToNVIDIA RAID Driver, How To 05/20/2004 11:43 AM US Agents raid p2p homesUS Agents raid p2p homes 08/27/2004 01:56 PM US Attorney General John Ashcroft reported that US agents had raided the homes of 5 people suspected of illegally trading copyrighted material. Agents raided homes in Texas, Wisconsin and New York, and seized computers involved. Ashcroft, viewed by many as a hard-line Attorney General, remarked that "P2P does not stand for 'permission to pilfer'". He also commented that the he believed that the DoJ shouldn't turn a blind eye whilst piracy on such a large scale was taking place. The targets of the raids were users of popular file sharing program, Direct Connect. The 5 people were acting as hubs; hubs are the Kazaa equivalent of "super-nodes" - users sharing massive quantities of files. Ashcroft said that each of the 5 hubs had 40 petabytes of data in them (ed - this figure seems massively in-correct - and would more likely be 40 gigabytes - perhaps terabytes. The DC website claims to have only just reached 1 petabyte of data network-wide.). The DoJ hopes to reduce the spread of illegal piracy by taking down these main hubs of copyrighted material distribution. Asides from a physical effect, these raids haev a large psychological effect on the p2p community, as the RIAA and the MPAA have learned to their advantage. Record labels and associations have initiated about 4000 lawsuits over the last 2 years, most of them being settled out of court for $5000. Read full story...
