Comair System Crash Leaves Thousands

Comair System Crash Leaves Thousands
Stranded
12/25/2004 09:44 PM

Thousands of travelers cope with holiday headaches: Tens of thousands of people spent Christmas in an airport today because of a system malfunction.

The computer system Comair uses to book pilots for flights broke down, he said.

Comair could not pinpoint a reason for the computer crash and could not say why there was no backup system.

I predict that there's going to be some IT guy out of a job when this is done. Additionally, if this is proven to be the work of a hacker or a bug, the press time devoted to it will be something to behold.

ZDNet UK is reporting that British Telecom's 'Bluephone' is almost ready to launch. The project aims to create a hybrid Bluetooth/GSM phone that can make calls using a landline when at home (using Bluetooth for cordless connection) but can make cellular calls when out of the house. Useful, perhaps, but not too useful—it's likely calls won't be able to seamlessly transfer from network to network.

BT has also announced the development of a newer version of the Bluephone that supports Wi-Fi, with a WiMax version possibly to launch even further down the line.
