Windows Longhorn Glass Look Updated

Windows Longhorn Glass Look Updated 05/07/2004 12:15 PM

It's funny to see the increase in hit to my Windows Longhorn Glass Look page everytime there's news about Longhorn. Today ZDnet Belgium even put a link to it in the "relevant links" section of an article about Aero. WinSuperSite published new screenshots and I liked the new menus, so I added a menu to the page. ?

The new glass look of Windows Longhorn is very pretty. This is of course a challenge to imitate in HTML. It's Internet Explorer for Windows only. CSS does most of the work, and there's a little bit of Javascript. It's slow and useless, but it's pretty! Now if I only had Mozilla's curved borders, Safari's text-shadow, Opera's speed and SVG's Gaussian blur to finish it off. ?

Thru-Glass_3.jpg imageA company called Data Vision has developed a new 15-inch LCD touchscreen called 'Thru-Glass' for retail stores that works through windows. The touch part works through windows, I mean, not just the light; that wouldn't be that impressive. Beyond that, it's pretty much just a regular screen, but it could be an interesting way to show off some of your products and answer simple questions even after the lights have been dimmed for the evening. For the £2,000 purchase price Data Vision will even install it for you, which is nice of them.

It's been about a year since we last mentioned smart glass-enabled windows, that can turn opaque at the flip of the switch. At that time, the glass was part of a prototype home. However, it looks like you can now buy your own smart glass if you don't mind shelling out $80 to $160 per square foot. For the rest of us, we'll stick with this funky "old school" technology we call "window blinds."

Updated Longhorn WinHEC SDK

Updated Longhorn WinHEC SDK 06/07/2004 11:41 PM
The code samples, which demonstrate how to use many of the new "Longhorn" technologies, are provided in Visual Basic, C#, and the Managed Extensions for C++. You can locate and view samples, organized by technology, by choosing the Samples tab in the documentation viewer. For each sample, you can view the source file, read a topic describing the sample, and copy the sample to your local hard drive to build and run the sample. You can build the Visual Basic and C# samples using the commmand line compilers included in "Longhorn" or you can use the PDC edition of the "Whidbey" release of Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET. To compile and run the C++ samples, you must use the PDC edition of the "Whidbey" release of Visual Studio .NET. Samples that ship in the .NET Framework SDK are not included in this release of the "Longhorn" SDK. However, they are available in the "Whidbey" release of Visual Studio .NET.

Windows Longhorn?

Windows Longhorn? 08/11/2004 12:43 AM
I'm not sure why Microsoft feel the need to reinvent the name of their operating system with every major release: Windows 1.0 to 3.1.1, Windows 95 to 98, Windows NT 3.5 to 4.0, Windows Me, Windows 2000 to 2003, Windows XP. Sure it's confusing, isn't it?
But, anyhoo, can you help out Microsoft's marketing department in coming up with a new name for Longhorn?

Microsoft Watch reports that Microsoft has more delays with the release of Windows Longhorn. This file system was supposed to offer a lot and could have really given them an edge. Microsoft has apparently decided that they will rely on offering more unwanted features…

With the recent release of the initial Longhorn bits, we now need to start thinking about the competitive landscape for 2005, which is when the next version of Windows is likely to ship. To understand the future, we need to first look at the past, at the launch of Windows 95 and how IBM OS/2 and Apple Computer failed to compete against Microsoft. I was the lead Dataquest analyst on the Windows 95 launch, and Longhorn is beginning to look like a similar series of events with many of the same players in the game.

Updated Windows XP SP2 release schedule

Updated Windows XP SP2 release schedule 08/16/2004 02:34 PM
From Microsoft

"As you know, Microsoft recently released Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to manufacturing on Friday, August 6, 2004. You may also know that Microsoft will deliver Windows XP SP2 through the Automatic Update delivery mechanism in Windows as a critical update. This process began on Tuesday, August 10.

Since some of our customers, such as your organization, utilize Automatic Update for a collection of your PCs, and since your organization may not yet be prepared to deploy Windows XP SP2 onto those machines, we recently made available a mechanism for temporarily blocking the download of Windows XP SP2 to those machines using Automatic Update. Last week, we received feedback from our corporate customers that they would like more time to put this temporary blocking mechanism into place. Based on that feedback, we have altered the delivery schedule of Windows XP SP2. The machines in your organization using Automatic Update will not receive Windows XP SP2 until Wednesday, August 25 at the earliest as long as those machines are running Windows XP Professional Edition.

Here is a summary of the altered delivery schedule for Windows XP SP2:

  • 8/6 - Release to manufacturing
  • 8/9 - Release to Microsoft Download Center (full network installation package)
Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image)
  • 8/10 - Release to Automatic Update (for machines running pre-release versions of Windows XP SP2 only)
  • 8/16 - Release to Software Update Services
  • 8/18 - Release to Automatic Update for users running Windows XP Home Edition only
  • 8/25 - Release to Automatic Update for all Windows XP users including those running Windows XP Professional Edition
Release to Windows Update for interactive user installations
