HP iPAQs In Space 05/07/2004 07:51 AM

HP has sent Pocket PCs into space, packing iPAQs on board the International Space Station Soyuz 8 space craft, to be used as, well, PDAs. The iPAQ h5550s will be used to check email, record daily procedures, and read e-books, among other things. The two units will stay on board...

CDW Leaks Information About New iPaqs 07/13/2004 10:05 AM

HP_rz1715_1_S.jpg imageLooks like online office retailer CDW jumped the gun a bit with HP's new iPaq line, revealing some surprisingly disappointing information about the rz1715, specifically. According to CDW's information, the rz1715 will not be using the Second Edition of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, will not have dual-slots as previously rumored, and is listed as being loaded with a minuscule 25MB of RAM. One upside, though, is that the shipping time for all the new iPaqs is listed as 1-2 weeks -- if you're feeling frisky, you could probably pre-order now.

Brighthand has a breakdown off all the leaked information about all five new iPaqs.

om_h6315.jpg imageHP has officially pulled the tarps from its new iPAQ line of Pocket PC PDAs; the first reviews are just starting to trickle in. Mobile dervish Om Malik has had one of the most exciting new iPAQ models, the h6315, in his hands for about a week, and while it isn't the most favorable review I've ever read, it still looks pretty exciting for anyone more technically minded in search of a hyper-connected phone/PDA (we're talking GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in a single device).

We'll have a bit more on some of the other iPAQs released today as it comes in, at least if its anything new and interesting (most of the details seem to be the same as we reported pre-release), but for now here's some of the dirty details on the h6315.

“SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back. The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control. It was carried to 50,000ft (15km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.” The BBC’s servers are being hit hard at the moment - if you can’t get the story, try again later.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. Will You Ever Be Able To Look At A Space
Without Advertising Again?

Will You Ever Be Able To Look At A Space
Without Advertising Again?
12/16/2003 01:45 PM
Certain advertisers are starting to realize that any blank space that people look at, for any length of time, can be used for advertising. All those blanks walls in stores? Wasted space! And, now they're looking to take what they (haven't) learned from advertising online, and make sure that the advertising you're inundated with is personalized to you. It may not be long until you're walking around a store and discover that an ad targeted directly at you is following you around on the wall. Sound creepy? Hell yes, but it appears not everyone has figured that out yet. Perhaps some people should take a step back and look at just how well this sort of "plan" has worked out online. Every blank space is filled with flashing, squawking, bleeping banner ads - and everyone ignores them. What about personalization? Well, so far, despite plenty of information on what I surf, it doesn't look like any of these "sophisticated" advertising systems has any idea what's remotely interesting to me. So, now they expect that this will suddenly work if the ads are shown on the walls of stores? Seems doubtful. And, how do they plan to know who you are and what you might be interested in a real world devoid of deposited cookies? They have lots of ideas, from monitoring your mobile phone (you can fill out a "survey" which your phone will broadcast to all the advertising projectors surrounding you) to doing face recognition on the fly.
