MSNBC: Social Networks Go to Work

MSNBC: Social Networks Go to Work 07/29/2004 05:06 PM
I just filed this story for MSNBC about the business value of social networking services. Truth or hype: can some SNSes become helpful professional tools for businesses -- in particular, independent entrepreneurs and smaller companies, for whom each new personal connection is a significant business building block? Includes interviews with unrepentant compulsive digital networkers danah boyd, Frank Keeney of SOCALWUG, Noah Glass of audblog, Scott Beale of Laughing Squid, Scott Rafer of Feedster, Travis Kalanick of RedSwoosh (and, once upon a time, Scour.net), and human router Joi Ito -- who said this:
Their usefulness depends on your needs and networking style. LinkedIn, for example allows you to search histories and CVs in your network -- it's great for finding people who work in a particular company, or who have worked with someone you know. It's also an interesting way to find references for people or companies you're getting to know.

I think email is broken in a serious way, and SNS is trying to address some of the issues associated with that breakdown. These networks may get it right and really change the way we do business, but we're still at the beginning of the development and evolution curve.

50 Foot Wave in Time for European Tour
09/23/2004 10:41 AM
50 Foot Wave opens tonight at the Garage in London, marking the return of Kristin Hersh back to the European rock stage with a blistering live act. Yet none of the popular centralized digital music distribution services have the six tracks from 50 Foot Wave's self-titled mini-album available. Fortunately, Throwing Music, Ltd. found a remarkable solution that not only makes the songs available anywhere in the world simultaneously, but which does so at the same price of US$1. Instead of a centralized "on-line store," Billy O'Connell, manager of Throwing Music, chose a different approach. [PRWEB Sep 23, 2004]

Pervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information, entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new communication technologies now being used in home and office networks. Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

War on Pornography

War on Pornography 07/07/2004 01:29 AM
A loosely-formed alliance of congresscritters, attorneys general, religious organizations, and anti-porn advocates announced a "War on Pornography" Monday afternoon in Utah. The coalition of American and Canadian groups trotted out fact-free stats like "pornography is more addictive than alcohol, cigarettes or illicit drugs," and cautioned against the growing moral dangers for youth posed by an unregulated Internet. In the spirit of Nigritude Ultramarine, Fleshbot makes a pitch to googlebomb the anti-porn campaign: "It would be really funny to have this [Fleshbot] post wind up as the top Google result for 'War On Pornography' in the future ..." Link to Salt Lake Tribune story, Link to WarOnPornography.com, and Link to Fleshbot's coverage.

Microsoft Hunts Child Pornography

Microsoft Hunts Child Pornography 04/08/2005 06:01 PM
Microsoft launched a software program designed to help police worldwide hunt down child porn traffickers by enabling authorities for the first time to link information such as credit card purchases, internet chat room messages and arrest records. The Child Exploitation Tracking System is the first software designed specifically to capture pornographers who prey on children over the internet.

It will allow police departments worldwide to share and track previously unlinked information on investigations and suspects. The open source program was developed by Microsoft Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Toronto police, with the help of the Department of Homeland Security, Scotland Yard and Interpol. The FBI has seen a 2,000 percent increase in the number of child pornography images on the internet since 1996 and Canadian police estimate that more than 100,000 websites contain images of child sexual abuse.

Investigating New Blogging Software

Investigating New Blogging Software 06/22/2004 01:18 AM

After all of my other connectivity problems as of late, now Radio is acting up and not publishing my posts when I post them. As far as I can tell, Userland's upgrade focus is on Manila, not Radio, and while I love using blogging software that integrates a news aggregator, I'm getting tired of having major problems with Radio every few months.

I think it may finally be time to switch, so posting may be light here (unintentionally or not!) while I figure out my next move.

A couple of months ago I asked if Novell's new Open Enterprise Server (or any other Linux distribution) would be enabled to run NetWare Loadable Modules, the applications that run within a NetWare server. We were briefly led to believe that this might be possible with an "NLM to ELF" tool, ELF (Executable and Linking Format) being the format for Linux code that can be ported among different distributions. If an NLM could be turned into an ELF format, then it could be directly ported to Linux. Sadly, it was a simple case of misunderstanding - there's an "ELF to NLM" tool, but not the reverse.
