One of my biggest criticisms of Microsoft's Portable Media Center platform has been that there's really nothing to watch. You could download a few B-list movies from CinemaNow and Major League Baseball games or copy stuff from your Windows Media Center PC, but if you wanted to put anything else on the device, you had to transcode your video to Windows Media Video format (a hassle I will, perhaps unfairly, put up with in the PSP, but not in a device with the primary purpose of playing back video).

Thankfully, Microsoft has finally launched MSN Video Downloads, the long-promised service to provide daily-updated content for easy download and syncing to your Portable Media Center. I haven't used it, but glancing over the content list looks somewhat promising—enough so that the $20-a-year subscription fee is probably worth it, if you've already dropped $400 on a PMC (and the content works on Pocket PCs, as well).

RSS Sync is a Pocket PC 2003 ActiveSync Extension. It synchronizes RSS/RDF news to your PDA - effectively creating an offline newsreader. The sync program updates RSS data at scheduled intervals. Data is then synchronized to the PDA, where it can be viewed in the RSS Viewer aggregator. The headlines are stored in a small database on the PDA, so you can carry the information with you anywhere and examine it without being connected on the internet. Simeda's CTO Razvan Dragomirescu showed me an interesting bit of software they're working on for PocketPC called 'Pocket Rendezvous,' a port of the Rendezvous easy networking system (commonly used by OSX applications, although it works just fine on PC, too). Using Pocket Rendezvous, users can set up a personal, auto-discoverable web servers for a variety of purposes, such as matchmaking services (think broadcasted business cards or personal ads), private music streaming (be the mysterious F train DJ!), or anything else a crafty developer can build on top of the Rendezvous setup (iTunes, for instance, uses Rendezvous to do the quick-sharing of music libraries). The software isn't released yet, though, and Razvan is looking for a few beta testers to give Pocket Rendezvous a swing before they officially launch the product in June. If you were to email, say razvan.dragomirescu then add one of those squiggly ear looking symbols to simeda.com, you could probably email him and he'd give you the details.

And, indeed, despite Hollywood's efforts, it's a dream that in many ways is coming true. While the government and Hollywood fret over ways to keep high-definition television off the Internet, copies of standard-definition TV shows are now heavily traded online. Once an underground activity plagued by hard-to-use tools and less-than-stellar picture quality, the systems for finding and downloading TV are steadily becoming easier to use, and the current watchability of the shows is nothing to scoff at.

In recent months, a host of developers and TV enthusiasts have been working on ways to improve the TV trade online -- they're building sophisticated trading networks to record and encode and distribute shows, and they're improving peer-to-peer transfer systems to make downloading easier. The hottest new improvement is made possible by the merging of two of the Internet's newest innovations, the p2p protocol BitTorrent and RSS, the popular Web syndication standard. Together, these systems allow a computer to automatically find and download a user's favorite shows -- something like having a TV station designed just for you.
