Commentary: Why the markets still don't trust Linux

Commentary: Why the markets still don't
trust Linux
05/07/2004 03:44 AM

Linux has only recently begun to regain credibility in the financial markets since its speculative debut. However, its licensing model, hefty competition, and lack of maturity still worry investors. Companies such as Red Hat, long past its 1999 speculative highs, are slowly gaining ground while other Linux companies, such as Linspire, are planning initial public offerings. Is Linux finally becoming a viable alternative to proprietary operating systems, or is this rise simply a byproduct of a mini-tech bubble (as Bill Gates so eloquently put it)?

LINUXWORLD -- The main theme of this show ought to be, "We now offer Linux support!" Most of the companies making this boast -- often in press releases with all-caps headlines -- are proprietary software vendors, and most of their products are utilities of some sort aimed at enterprise users, not at consumer-level desktop users.

SALT LAKE CITY -- I had an abbreviated schedule here on Day 4 as the main phase of Brainshare 2005 drew to a close. BrainShare will continue Thursday and Friday, but the press and the outside vendors will be gone. It'll be quality time for Novell and its customers. So I'll use the occasion to provide a wrap-up of the conference rather than another daily summary.

Sorry, but Linux will never be completely accepted by the consuming public in the United States until one can walk into a mainstream store such as Best Buy, Fry's, or Circuit City and buy such a computer off the shelf -- or on the Web -- from a name-brand maker.

Linus Torvalds trusts that when any of the 25 or so Linux kernel subsystem maintainers collaborating on the operating system send him code, it hasn't been stolen from anyone. Starting today, the approval process will be formalized to document a "chain of trust" to deter intellectual property claims like those leveled by SCO, according to a proposal from Torvalds and the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL).

Robert X. Cringely: How Linux is Inadvertently Poised to Remake the Telephone and Internet Markets. There seems to be a persistent myth that VoIP + Wi-Fi is greater (or more profitable) than the sum of its parts, but I've seen no evidence to support it. The point of the layered model of the Internet is that bundling things from different layers doesn't give you any gain.

Paolo Valdemarin: "After September 11 the US were leading the largest coalition of countries ever seen. Now, whatever the US administration is saying, they are going to a war alone." Actually the British are fighting with the US.

Lance Knobel: "I'd like to have seen an alternative to war, but that would have meant an international commitment to intrusive inspections, backed by the threat of force. In the light of French and Russian vacillation, it's very unclear whether that could have worked."

Megnut: "I'm uncomfortable with the idea of America unilaterally removing someone from power. And I am very disturbed by the approach the American government has taken to achieve its goals."

Karlin Lillington: "The Bush administration has been utterly hopeless and inept in creating a coalition abroad, in showing leadership overseas, in working towards consensus."
