I have been in torture photos, too. Gerry Adams speaks out. "News of the ill-treatment of prisoners in Iraq created no great surprise in republican Ireland. We have seen and heard it all before. Some of us have even survived that type of treatment. Suggestions that the brutality in Iraq was meted out by a few miscreants aren't even seriously entertained here. We have seen and heard all that before as well. But our experience is that, while individuals may bring a particular impact to their work, they do so within interrogative practices authorised by their superiors."

People are beginning to notice. There have been lots of little signs creeping up on everyone, and suddenly you look around and it feels like Silicon Valley is booming again. Companies are doing well. There's lots of hype - and where there's hype, there's venture capital cash. Of course, this time around everyone claims they've learned their lessons from 1999, but just wait and see what a few hot IPOs will do to selectively erase some memories.

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth
Tracking
05/12/2004 12:42 PM
Intel Research looks at tracking people you see all the time, but don't know, via Bluetooth: Mark Frauenfelder writes about Intel's Jabberwocky, which explores your relationship with other people, including what are called familiar strangers: people who you don't know, but recognize because you see them regularly. The first instantiation is a Bluetooth application that tracks the Bluetooth IDs it sees. The more frequently you see certain IDs, the more familiar the program marks them. When you're surrounded by actual strangers (or their strange Bluetooth devices), you'll see a different display than when you're near people you see often but don't know. Once and if everyone is carrying Bluetooth devices, perhaps you could use this tool as a way to avoid detection. Private detectives will have to learn to turn off Bluetooth features to avoid showing up as known parties. Trying to avoid colleagues at work? As the colored squares grow in intensity, you zip out a fire door....

Los Angeles Times - ZARQA, Jordan — The town that would give Abu Musab Zarqawi his notorious moniker is a hard place — treeless and tough, cinder-block apartment houses punctuated by drab mosques. They say you have to be a thug to make it in the streets here, and the young Zarqawi had all the credentials: He ran with a fast crowd, fought easily and covered his skin with tattoos.

Dance, familiar. Dance...

Dance, familiar. Dance... 12/11/2003 02:34 PM

An interesting line about the selves manufactured by spies (that seems to me to have currency for all people who have cause to narrativise their lives in one way or another) from John Le Carré's rather blandly-titled (but also rather good) new novel Absolute Friends:

But who is Mundy Three, when Mundys One and Two have gone to bed? Who is this third person who is neither one of the other two, who lies awake while they sleep, and listens for the chimes of country bells he doesn't hear? He is the silent spectator. he is the one member of the audience who doesn't applaud the performances of his two familiars. He is made up of all the odd bits of his life that are left over after he has given the rest away.

What Is Longhorn?

What Is Longhorn? 08/30/2004 11:58 AM
Dave Winer: WHen you ask a Microsoft person to say what Longhorn is supposed to do, you get rambly hand-wavy words that mean nothing. A product with a purpose has a two-sentence description that gets everyone so excited they can't wait. Longhorn isn't designed to solve anyone's problems. I think they all know it, but they can't say it out loud because they've all drunk the Kook Aid on this.

Would You Want To Buy Longhorn Now?

Would You Want To Buy Longhorn Now? 12/02/2003 12:13 AM
It's no secret that plenty of bootleg software shows up in various marketplaces in Asia. Thus, while I'm not at all surprised to hear that Malaysian street vendors are apparently selling bootleg copies of Microsoft's Longhorn OS, I have to wonder who would buy such a thing? Microsoft, of course, isn't known for getting things right on the first shot, but this isn't even the first release of Longhorn, but something that is so far in pre-release mode that I'd be surprised if it really works at all. Longhorn isn't expected to hit the market for a couple of years (note the plural), so I imagine anyone who actually spends money on it at this point is getting something that isn't anywhere near ready for prime time use.
