Digital cameras change history in Iraq
Digital cameras change history in Iraq
05/06/2004 12:53 PMBoing Boing Guestbar alum Todd Lappin sez: "Some interesting comments
from a front page story in Thursday's
Washington Post about
the role digital cameras have played in in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse
debacle. If Vietnam was the first televised war, Iraq will probably
be remembered as the war in which personal media technology altered
the course of history."
For many units serving in Iraq, digital cameras are
pervasive and yet another example of how technology has transformed
the way troops communicate with relatives back home. From Basra to
Baghdad, they e-mail pictures home. Some soldiers, including those in
the 372nd, even packed video cameras along with their rifles and
Kevlar helmets.
Bill Lawson, whose nephew, Staff Sgt. Ivan L. "Chip" Frederick,
is one of the soldiers charged in the incident, said that Frederick
sent home pictures from Iraq on a few occasions. They were "just
ordinary photos, like a tourist would take" and nothing showing
prisoner abuse, he said.
"I would say that's something that's very common that's going
on in Iraq because it's so convenient and easy to do," Lawson said of
troops sending pictures home. He added that his nephew also mailed
videocassettes "of him talking into a camcorder to [his wife] when he
was going on his rounds."
But in the case of prisoner abuse, the ubiquity of digital
cameras has created a far more combustible international scandal that
would have been sparked only by the release of Taguba's searing
written report. Since the "60 Minutes II" broadcast, pictures of abuse
have been posted on the Internet and shown on television stations
worldwide.

gital cameras are changing how Iraq war is perceived: How would
this have been different if they were traditional? Would it have
played out differently? Traditional photos can get lost, aren't
instantly reproducable, and have to be physically transported. Would
this situation not have come to light if that were the case?
Some of the most shocking or memorable photos from the Iraq war
were almost certainly taken by soldiers or government contractors
— and zipped around the world with an ease that never existed in
the days of film. [...]
...The New Yorker confirmed the photos were shot with a digital
camera, though it did not disclose the source.

07/19/2004 08:09 AMBack in the Bad Old Days we kept our photos crammed into shoeboxes in
the closet, to be pulled out once every few years for a halfhearted
attempt at assembling an album. With the onset of the digital era,
that should be a thing of past, right? Yet most of us have simply
replaced the shoeboxes with overcrowded folders on our PCs, and
because our digital cameras tend to slap on unhelpful names like
DCS00032.JPG, we still have to browse through them all manually to
find the ones that are of interest to us. But one particularly good
open source program, imgSeek, can help you get organized.

Soldiers posting Iraq photos on the net
Soldiers posting Iraq photos on the net
12/03/2003 05:16 AM While doing some digital camera format research, I ran across Through
the Lens of a Soldier, which are ostensibly (I assume that they are
genuine, having no reason to disbelieve it) pictures taken by a
soldier in the 101st Airborne division serving in Mosul in Northern
(Kurdish) Iraq that were then posted on a photo sharing service by her
sister, for all to see and comment on. The debate on whether the Iraq
War is good or bad is of course raging in the comments, with many of
the participants ostensibly members of the armed forces. There are
many moving photos, and some funny ones -- my favorite in that
category is a picture of a "no photography" sign. How does it change
journalism when serving soldiers are publishing reports and photos
from the front for all to see? How about when they start sending back
live video? And then other serving soldiers debate the war in the
comments of the publication forum? How does it change the military,
and the relationship between the military and the American people? I
don't know the answer to any of these questions, except to know that
it will cause changes to all of the above, and to hope that more
openness and more unfiltered communication between the American
citizens at home and those citizens serving in the armed forces will
enhance democracy....
