Art Rhyno Is Still Working on
LibraryLookup!
03/19/2003 10:45 PM

Art Rhyno is doing a great job of trying to extend Jon Udell's LibraryLookup Bookmarklet, and he's pursuing some very interesting ideas. He can explain his Book marklet Helper far better than I can, but he's now working on an app using Cocoon to create a proof-of-concept for the Leddy Library.

His plan is to first pass an ISBN or ISSN as a query against the library's catalog. Anything that is not found is queried against a Z39.50 target that he specifies (perhaps for a nearby library). It then searches Google for anything it didn't find. Art is also exploring ways to hook into an ISBN mapping service in order to search for all editions of a particular title. One possibility would be to use Amazon for this purpose but they probably wouldn't be too thrilled about that, which is why we really need a library-initiated service. WorldCat, anyone? Or do we need to create our own CDDB for books? (One that stays non-profit.)

It became apparent to me how much we need to implement this ourselves (rather than waiting for a vendor) when I spoke to an Innovative Interfaces rep at last week's conference. She hadn't even heard of LibraryLookup, and she didn't understand its potential at all. In fact, she tried to tell me they have a product that already does this, until I pointed out to her the differences that made LibraryLookup a complementary service.

Even then, she didn't grasp how helpful it would be to Innovative libraries, nor how Innovative could help by promoting it (let alone by helping create a full search toolbar). She said she'd take the info back to her office, so I'm waiting to see if I hear back from them. This is an opportunity for III to help its customers in new and interesting ways while promoting why their more open catalog is a Martha-Stewart-good-thing. I hope they realize this and run with it.

If they don't, though, we're lucky we've got people like Art. Actually, either way we're lucky to have people like Art, and I look forward to watching his progress with this!

Library Lookup update: TLC

"There's been another big surge of interest in LibraryLookup< /A> over the past few days. It started at 43 Folders, and spread to various places including Subterranean Homepage News, Lost Remote, Rebec ca Blood, and The Guardian.

Thanks to Jill Darbyshire, I've been able to add support in the bookmarklet generator for yet another class of OPAC systems. The vendor is TLC, and I believe it should now be possible to generate bookmarklets for many of the TLC systems listed here." [Jon's Radio]

I'll also note that I saw this recent round appear on Lost Remote, The Providence Journal, and Boing Boing, three pretty big sites that aren't library-related. Ask yourself how important is it for library services to have an open, web services back-end that lets your staff, third-parties, and users access the data from outside your catalog's native interface?

Does your vendor work with LibraryLookup< /A>? If not, you've got a problem.

LibraryLookup: Aleph

LibraryLookup: Aleph 07/22/2004 09:48 AM
Thanks to Janet Lefkowitz, a librarian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the LibraryLookup< /a> project has added support for a fifteenth class of OPAC (online public access catalog) system: Ex Libris Aleph. This was an interesting collaboration. I'd looked at a few different Aleph systems, and found that their URLs varied from one implementation to the next in ways that I didn't have time to unravel. But Janet was willing to do this research, and she presented me with a set of Aleph URLs that illustrated the variations. I updated the Build your own Bookmarklet (BYOB) script accordingly. ...

Multi-ISBN LibraryLookup

Multi-ISBN LibraryLookup 11/14/2003 12:07 AM
If you've followed the saga of LibraryLookup, you may recall that there's a fly in the ointment: a book usually has more than one ISBN (1, 2). So, for example, if you're viewing the paperback edition of The Innovator's Dilemma on Amazon, a search for its ISBN at my local library comes up empty-handed. The library's catalog can't relate the paperback's ISBN, 0066620694, to the hardcover's ISBN, 0875845851 -- a book that is actually on its shelf. ...

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Thanks, Ado and Brent. [a preponderance of evidence - What Willis Wuz' Talkin' 'Bout]

Working At The Club

Working At The Club 06/14/2004 05:11 AM
With more and more people telecommuting or "freelancing," the home office has been getting a lot more attention. Still, not everyone likes to work from home (and for some people, it's really difficult). There are tons of "temporary office space" companies that buy up buildings and let people rent out single offices. However, one company is trying to go (just slightly) beyond that by setting up a "work club", where you pay your membership dues and get to hang out in the common areas and meet your co-workers. You also can use meeting rooms, phone booths, and some limited amount of personal office space. Honestly, though, this doesn't seem all that different from most temporary or executive office space operations - other than they seem to be trying to make it sound cooler with trendy phrases to describe everything. For example, meeting rooms are "team spaces" while the cubicle farm is a "touchdown space." Right.

Feverishly working

Feverishly working 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Sadly, I've been quite absent from my writing lately. I've been stuck in monotony at work lately and then busy as a bee at home so the things I want to do get done in smaller and smaller blocks of time. I managed to get a "final" theme for Mac Geekery going such that I'm actually happy with it. I have some ideas for what to do with the site now and I'm writing a lot of articles that I will publish soon to that end.

One thing I do know about setting up Drupal, now, is that the default install that uses one large .htaccess file for everything is the slowest possible solution. I imported all those statements into a Directory statement for the virtual host and site performance at CP and MG went up over 500%. I was amazed.

If you're running a site that depends on an .htaccess file, don't. Import the directives into a configuration file and tell Apache to ignore the .htaccess file (or, better yet, remove it). You'll see a huge increase in performance.

Notae is progressing well, but due to a lack of free time development on it is stunted. It's seeing a very slow launch time due to some font fun which I have a solution in mind for but just haven't gotten the time to implement it. When that's done I might start a beta round. Don't volunteer now, I'll ask when the time comes.

Still kicking, but not working

Still kicking, but not working 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Sorry it's been so long since my last post, but I've been working hard at not working. For those that would like an update on my injury, a recent MRI shows that I have a herniated cervical disk which is pressing on a nerve root (English translation: it freaking hurts!). Early next week I visit a specialist who will either provide a steroid injection or, depending on the severity of the problem, recommend surgery.

In the past I've always loved the fact that I'm a "one man company," but I'm now seeing the obvious downside - there's no one to take up the slack when something like this happens. Typing for any length of time is next to impossible, so my inbox continues to overflow with email that would be easy for someone else to answer. Once I'm back to work again, I may look into hiring someone to help out.

As an aside, I'm bummed that this injury is preventing me from running the half marathon I've been training for since December. The last time I attempted a marathon I got sidelined by a running injury, so to be stopped this time by something completely unrelated to running is maddening. Maybe next year :)

It's important not to fall asleep, because well... then you're not actually working, are you? The perils of working on a laptop in a lazy boy chair, I guess. But I think it's really my cat's fault. He saw me lean back and stretch. Then he jumped up on my chest and I figured "I'll let him stay, but just for a minute." Whoops. It was a good nap, though. Brief, but good. Wi-Fi Means: Never Having to Say "I'm
Not Working"
01/16/2004 11:01 AM
The New York Times offers this cheery piece that suggests you can still ignore your kids while in the same room [reg. required]: I'm sounding cynical, but this article does extol the virtues of being able to be connected all of the time and work all of the time, even when in physical proximity to your family. Seriously, however, the notion that you can get necessary work done and not have to hole yourself up in a basement or at a specific location is one of the great benefits of a home wireless network. Oddly, the piece opens looking at Oren Michels, identifying him as the president of a human resources benefits administration firm. I knew that name, so I perform a Google search, and find that he is also president and CEO of WiFinder, a Wi-Fi directory site. (Disclosure: I'm the senior editor at JiWire, an editorial and directory site focused on wireless that competes for ad/sponsor dollars with WiFinder.) I shot a note to Oren to confirm that he was still in that role at WiFinder, which he is. Like WiFinder's chairman and founder Scott Rafer, Oren wears a few hats. My point here is not that it's odd that Oren has multiple jobs, but rather it's an odd choice of the reporter to not mention that Oren Michels is the head of a company that's devoted to spreading information about Wi-Fi. It's not bias; it's just a strange omission, n'est c'est pas?...

Tip for working around the security bug

Tip for working around the security bug 05/19/2004 05:48 PM
I got a tip I’ll pass along on dealing with the OS X security bug.

If you change the protocol helper for "help" URLs, then the script should not run. I downloaded the More Internet Preference Pane and changed the handler for "help" to the Finder.

It turns out that the bug is more widespread than WebKit—even non-WebKit browsers such as Camino may be vulnerable.

(Thanks to Rob McNair-Huff of Mac Net Journal for the tip.)
