Virus definition, or .DAT, files contain up-to-date virus signatures and other information that Network Associates anti-virus products use to protect your computer against the thousands of computer viruses in circulation. Network Associates releases new .DAT files regularly to provide protection against the approximately 300 new viruses that appear each month. To ensure that your anti-virus software can protect your system or network against the latest virus threats, download and install the latest .DAT files.

McAfee Sneakiness

McAfee Sneakiness 02/10/2004 02:49 AM

I'm noticing some serious sneakiness on the part of McAfee.

I run SpamKiller, and I'm quite happy with it. However, I'm not thrilled with apps trying to check for updates all the time, so I've disabled the auto-update feature.

Recerntly, I installed Startup Monitor. Since then, I've been getting sporadic reports that an executable called MCUpdate.exe is trying to add a registry entry for itself to run on start-up. These would pop up at random intervals throughout the day.

At the same time, I'm noticing a Scheduled Task that refuses to stay deleted. It's a McAfee update job that I delete daily, but that keeps reappearing. What does it run? MCUpdate.exe.

So SpamKiller must check for this task, and re-add it if it doesn't find it in the Scheduled Tasks. Then this task must check for the start-up registry entry, then try to add it if it doesn't find it.

Like I said, sneaky.

McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware

McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware 07/14/2004 01:44 AM
The question of how to deal with spyware and adware is particularly challenging when programs users desire -- such as Kazaa -- require spyware components in order to operate. In its upcoming release of VirusScan, McAfee is attempting to address that very question. In developing the next iteration of VirusScan, McAfee's software engineers have made it their number one priority to enhance the detection and removal of spyware, adware and other malware. However, detection is only one part of the equation.

Update: McAfee to buy Foundstone for $86
million
08/16/2004 04:23 PM
McAfee has announced that it's purchasing Foundstone for $86 million. Foundstone specializes in technology for spotting and remediating software vulnerabilities. As part of the deal Foundstone's products will become part of McAfee's services, but at $86 million what would you expect.

McAfee will combine its newly acquired technology into its line of security products. The new lineup from McAfee will able to identify and shield users/corporations from Internet/network attacks. A company that for the longest time has only specialized in antivirus products is continuing to break into new markets. If McAfee keeps up this momentum its rival Symantec is going to have some serious catching up to do.

Though I'm not a personal fan of McAfee product I have to applaud the company for continuing to offer its customers better products. With an acquisition like this the McAfee name is now going to get a whole new meaning. Especially as it seems like McAfee is getting ready to challenge the big boys such as Cisco with new network security products.

McAfee releases Virex 7.5 for Macintosh

McAfee releases Virex 7.5 for Macintosh 07/19/2004 06:39 PM
McAfee Inc. announced on Monday that an upgrade to its Virex for Macintosh anti-virus software is now available. Version 7.5 features real-time "on access" scanning for viruses, automatic eUpdate functionality that downloads the latest virus updates, scheduling options for On Demand scans, an updated scan engine and generic detection, which helps the software find and eliminate variations of a virus. Virex 7.5 for Macintosh requires Mac OS X v10.1.3 or higher. McAfee had not updated its Web site with pricing information for the upgrade as MacCentral posted this article.

Virex 7.2.1 available from .Mac

Virex 7.2.1 available from .Mac 10/29/2003 02:19 AM
This isn't related to AppleScript but it's noteworthy for many .Mac subscribers who use Fink and Virex (I don't know about Virex releases from other sources). Virex 7.2 has hosed many Fink installations and here's what the Virex 7.2.1 ReadMe has to say about it:
During the installation of Virex 7.2, the Virex installer will copy a number of files into the /sw/lib directory. Fink software installations that are residing on the machine may then fail to work as their libraries will have been overwritten with the Virex 7.2 libraries. Virex 7.2.1 resolves this issue by installing the libraries to the /usr/local/vscanx/lib directory.
We now return to our regularly scheduled AppleScript news and information.

DO NOT INSTALL VIREX 7.2

DO NOT INSTALL VIREX 7.2 03/13/2003 10:15 AM
The Virex 7.2 package, currently being distributed free to all .Mac members, has a serious conflict with Fink. Fink users should not install Virex 7.2 under any circumstances. Installing it after Fink is installed will damage your Fink installation; installing it prior to Fink will make it impossible to install Fink without damaging Virex. This bug has been reported to Virex's manufacturer. We will keep the Fink community informed about the situation as it develops.

Virex problem resolved

Virex problem resolved 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
McAfee has released Virex 7.2.1, which no longer overwrites the main Fink directory /sw. Fink users should continue to avoid Virex 7.2. Early reports indicate that upgrading Virex from 7.2 to 7.2.1 still leaves some problems however. If you upgrade Virex with Fink not installed, and subsequently wish to install Fink, you will need to delete the /sw directory by hand before installing. And if you upgrade Virex with Fink already installed, you should immediately run fink reinstall openssl-shlibs dlcompat-shlibs curl-ssl-shlibs to restore files which the Virex upgrade may have deleted.
