ACE-HIGH Text To Speech Reader v1.30

ACE-HIGH Text To Speech Reader v1.30 03/19/2003 10:45 PM

It lets you listen to text instead of reading on screen and uses 'Text to Speech' technology to synthesize natural sounding speech from ordinary text. Just copy text to the clipboard or import from text files and listen as ATTSR reads it back to you! It also allows you to convert text to a MP3/WAV audio file.Create MP3 files from your email, news, articles and any text you want, download to your portable MP3 player and off you go.

Samsung P207 with Speech-to-Text 04/15/2005 01:01 PM

samsung_p207.jpgSamsung has released the P207 on Cingular today, a black flip phone with EDGE capability. It's not all that exciting in general, but it does have one particularly interesting feature: a speech-to-text technology that lets you speak SMS messages and emails into the phone in lieu of typing them in. If that works well, that could be a fantastically useful feature.

QuickPhrase.jpgSince I was cursed with stubby fingers, texting's always been a pain. So you can be sure I'll be scrambling to land one of the first SCH-a890s, equipped with voice-recognition technology. Still, I guess I shouldn't get too excited--so-called QuickPhrase only recognizes a list of pre-programmed sayings, like "Will call you later." But I'm guessing it won't take long for them to offer firmware upgrades that greatly expand the number of phrases. I give it 6 months before the SCH-a890 can understand such SMS standbys as "Sorry, baby, but I was out drinking with Rob and lost my house keys." If I had a nickel for every time I've sent that note...

High schoolers on free speech

High schoolers on free speech 02/01/2005 08:38 PM
David Pescovitz: A new study reveals that far too many US high school students don't seem to understand the meaning of free speech, aren't taught about the First Amendment, or simply don't care. A few choice excerpts from the AP story:
...When told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories...

Three in four students said flag burning is illegal...

About half the students said the government can restrict any indecent material on the Internet.
Who is teaching these kids? Link

UPDATE: Fortunately at least some students aren't being entirely short-changed by their schools, as this email from BB reader Maxx Garrison points out:
"I am a junior (11th grade) at Cocalico High School. Our school has a mandatory course named Principals of Democracy. In this class, we are taught everything about the Constitution including an in depth study of the Bill of Rights. The students must also write a essay about a section of the bill of rights and also conduct a formal debate against fellow classmates. On this essay we must use at least 34 sources and my paper turned out to be 16 pages on the second amendment right to bear arms. So, just to clarify, some of us do know a thing or two about the constitution. Also, as students, we do not have the right to free speech, protection from unreasonable search or seizure, or freedom of assembly."
UPDATE: As reader Steve Jones points out, the common "principals" vs. "principles" spelling error in Maxx's email is particularly ironic in this case.

UPDATE: Blogger Britta Gustafson says:
Students do have the right to free speech, protection from unreasonable search or seizure, and freedom of assembly. The rights are more restricted than those of adults, but we have them. The extent depends on your state and school district.

I'm in 12th grade at a high school in the horrible Los Angeles Unified School District. My friends and I started an underground newspaper because the principal insisted on prior review if we did an official one. She can't stop us from publishing and distributing our paper as long as it is not disruptive, libelous, or obscene. We can only be searched randomly or if there is reasonable suspicion. We are free to assemble on and off campus as long as it is not disruptive.

The problem is that students don't have the resources to protect their rights. We get suspended if we don't wear the school uniform -- even though mandatory uniforms are illegal -- and we can't do much about it. The District bureaucrats don't care and legal action is out of reach for most of us.

But we write about it. High school journalism is still alive -- and the best way for us to learn what our 1st Amendment rights really mean.

SMS Speed Record Sets Guinness World Record

"A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record for sending text messages over a cellphone, underlining Asia's growing obsession with cellplhone technology.

Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26 words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67 seconds for the same words set by a Briton in September 2003, said Singapore's dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), on Monday.

Cellphones are an ubiquitous accessory in technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world's highest cellphone penetration rates.

At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message: 'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.'...

Yeo, who won a S$17 500 (about R64 000) in cash for her nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1 500 text messages a month to friends and family." [iol, via textuall y.org]

Cepstral Voices for Mac OS X 03/22/2005 04:24 PM

I love text-to-speech. I love it even more when it sounds clear. As such, I wrote Text Reader to save some documents as audio to my iPod. However, I realized later, Mac OS X's default voices .. well ... suck. Then I came across these gems. While the engine that takes words and creates phonemes is the same (it's Mac OS X) the end result from those phonemes is much clearer. Finally, after ten years of TTS on the Mac, someone releases a third-party voice for it.

Go on, get it. It's awesome.
