Kill the head, and the body survives
Kill the head, and the body survives
01/02/2005 01:59 PMThe anticipation leading up to Macworld this year was a lot like it
was two years ago — a few rumors here and there had surfaced, Apple
sent out a few cease and desist orders and filed a few lawsuits, and
forums filled up with wild predictions and hopeful dreams for the
morning of Jan. 11.
That is, until this past Tuesday. Over at ThinkSecret, the rumors keep
rolling in, and with its near-perfect track record, we're all on the
edge of our seats.
And rightfully so. After all, when the most reliable rumor site
reports Apple will be answering all your deepest desires, people tend
to notice:
The new Mac, code-named Q88, will be part of the iMac family and is
expected to sport a PowerPC G4 processor at a speed around 1.25GHz.
The new Mac is said to be incredibly small and will be housed in a
flat enclosure with a height similar to the 1.73 inches of Apple's
Xserve. Its size benefits will include the ability to stand the Mac on
its side or put it below a display or monitor.
Sound familiar?
The G4 Cube is simply the coolest computer ever. An entirely new class
of computer, it marries the Pentium-crushing performance of the Power
Mac G4 with the miniaturization, silent operation and elegant desktop
design of the iMac. It is an amazing engineering and design feat, and
we’re thrilled to finally unveil it to our customers.
Of course, the main hook here is the excepted price: When the Cube
came out, it cost $1799. This new (rumored) version? $499.
And if it's true, it truly represents an Apple revolution of a
different sort.
We've seen Apple take various aspects of the industry by storm, but
for 90-somewhat-percent of the computing population, price has always
been the main sticking point. We’ve argued endlessly and have watched
market share slowly slip through Apple’s fingertips while the price
point stayed unattainable (or undesirable) for many.
OS X may be a more stable and reliable desktop operating system, but
like it or not, it came attached to one of three things: a high-priced
PowerMac, a high-priced iMac, or a clunky eMac.
With a sleek, low-priced Cube-like machine, Apple just may have a
winner on its hands.
Remember the new iBook (in May 2001)? When it first came out, Apple
couldn’t stock them fast enough. At $1299, it weighed under 5 pounds,
featured a 1024-by-768 resolution 12.1-inch display, FireWire and up
to 5 hours of battery life.
What about the original iMac? With a price point ranging from $799 to
$1499 over its three-and-a-half-year upgrade cycle revived Apple's
worth, sent its stock soaring and pushed quarterly Mac sales over 1
million.
Both the iBook and the iMac had the right combination of price,
performance and sleekness, and enjoyed a fair amount of attention upon
their arrival. With a headless iMac, however, Apple has an even
greater opportunity to keep it relevant for years to come: bundle a
monitor, add new ports, increase the processing power, add a G5… the
list goes on.
If a $499 desktop were to be released, Apple needs to run with it as
far as it can — past the end zone if need be. The headless iMac could
be a revolution that, like the iPod, could spell success for years to
come. By keeping it fresh, and releasing new models, promotions and
add-ons, market share could finally break 5-percent within the next
few years.
Who knew no head could be better than one.

Phillip Torrone @ Make:
Make your own Nine Inch Nails
MacMinute
has a story about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails making the band's
new single, "The Hand That Feeds" available to download for Mac users
with GarageBand to mix and mash up (an actual multi-track audio
session). "For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of
allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks -- to create
remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there," Reznor says.
Here's a screenshot of it on my Mac
(View image) and here's
where to get it (70MB file). Here
are a couple of the first remixes!
How excellent. This
is almost like open source music. It's one thing to say, "hey it's OK
to sample this." It's taking it to a totally different level to
publish it as a Garage Band project. Now if only they would put some
kind of Creative Commons license on it, it would be perfect.

Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
04/16/2005 09:26 PMAnyone using an Apple will have a special treat in store for them.
Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails has released the full-tracked
GarageBand Format of their song, "The Hands That Feeds". This is a
first as far as we know. Here is the info direct from Trent and you
can download the song from MacMegaSite.
For quite some time I've
been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker
around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or
destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave
with very limited results.
After spending some quality time
sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the
technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I
got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll
enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track
audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is
the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we
recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop
format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you
have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have
the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been
running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your
hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change
the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman.
Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew
and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while -
it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the
track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that
pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what
comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor
