Validator

Validator 08/19/2002 01:44 AM
This class dynamically creates validation javascript. Currently it is only generating limited comparisons. I did not want to clutter up the code with unnecessary test cases when I did not use them within my system. The system is fairly easy to understand and fairly easy to extend. Just the sort of thing that everyone has been looking for in a validator. :-)

W3C CSS Validator Woes 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

If you're accessing the W3C CSS validator from inside TopStyle, please be aware that Zeldman is reporting that the W3C's CSS Validator is currently broken. It's assumed that this will be fixed before long, but right now it's reporting problems in perfectly valid style sheets.

(Note: this doesn't affect TopStyle's integration with the W3C's HTML validator.)

XHTML Validator to RSS : Ben Hammersley: Oh my goodness, this is brilliant.

...I like nice to-do lists and automatic checking of my pages. So to combine the two, I've made a widget to create a XHTML Validation Results RSS feed from any page.

I now have an RSS feed of validation errors on my site, updated whenever I check it. The ingenuity of this is so great that it's giving me a cramp.

Must figure out what broke. Update #2: Yes, there's now a search box on the right side of my main index. I need to hack on...

CSE HTML Validator LITE

CSE HTML Validator LITE 08/13/2004 12:21 PM

Just got an email from Albert Wiersch letting me know that he's released a free LITE version of his excellent CSE HTML Validator.

This new LITE version works great inside TopStyle, enabling you to validate the current HTML document with a single click. Of course, if you're serious about finding errors, I recommend using the PRO version of CSE, since it includes more advanced features such as accessibility checking when used inside TopStyle.

CSS Validator Changes the Rules [updated
three times]

CSS Validator Changes the Rules [updated
three times]
02/10/2004 02:48 AM
The W3C's CSS validation service has accidentally changed the way it interprets CSS authoring practices. Many sites that were designed valid no longer validate when run through the service via standard linking methods. These sites are still valid per the CSS2 spec. The trouble is not with the authoring method used, but with the validator, which suffers from a long-standing bug. It needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Until it is fixed, workarounds are available, although you might find some of them more trouble than they are worth. An in-depth Report for designers and developers.

Linux kernel upgraded

Linux kernel upgraded 06/22/2005 02:56 AM

Linus Torvalds has released Version 2.6.12 of the Linux kernel, a major revision including support for Trusted Platform Modules (TPM), significant changes to many drivers and other features.

The revision arrives more than three months after Version 2.6.11 and is the first release since Torvalds switched to a different system for managing the kernel source code, a move that slowed development. The 2.6 kernel was introduced in late-2003, succeeding the 2.4 kernel and bringing in a number of improvements aimed at large companies.

The latest version introduces a driver for TPM chips such as those found in some IBM laptops; the TPM is designed as a hardware safeguard for critical data such as passwords. The driver supports TPM devices from National Semiconductor and Atmel.

Improvements have been made to IPv6, SELinux, the Software Suspend feature and the device mapper. A feature called address space randomization is designed to help block the effectiveness of viruses. A number of drivers, such as those for USB devices, networks and sound chips, have had major updates, and modifications have been made to the CIFS, JFS and XFS file systems.

In April, Torvalds decided to part ways with the BitKeeper software he had been using to manage the kernel source code since 2002, after a conflict over BitKeeper's proprietary nature. He first reverted to managing updates via e-mail and later in April launched the Git project as a substitute for BitKeeper.

Git is more efficient than e-mail but isn't compatible with BitKeeper, which created some difficulties for those converting to the new system.
