iPod Shuffle Shakes Up Music Habits 05/06/2004 07:10 PM

In essence, these devices function much like customized jukeboxes or personalized radio stations, but don't require a pocketful of coins to feed them or noisy advertisements to support them. By Joseph P. kahn, Boston Globe (via MyAppleMenu)

ASCAP Shakes Down Burning Man for Music
Royalties
08/27/2004 01:28 PM
LOS ANGELES, CA -- Officials from ASCAP today indicated they intend to pursue music royalties from the organizers of Burning Man, an artist's gathering and celebration held over the Labor Day holiday near Reno, NV. The unconventional event, held annually since 1986, has never paid fees for any of the music played at the event, says ASCAP. "We intend to pursue all available avenues to get this issue resolved," said Tony Wilcox, ASCAP spokesperson.

(parody) ASCAP shakes down Burning Man

(parody) ASCAP shakes down Burning Man
for music royalties
09/01/2004 11:34 AM
Xeni Jardin: Oh, the (glitter-covered, body-painted) humanity! The American Society for Composers, Authors, and Publishers -- ASCAP -- demanding cash from Burning Man?
When [a] composer's tune is played, ASCAP collects a fee from the venue performing it and delivers it, minus administrative costs, to the composer. For venues wishing to play copyrighted music for their visitors, ASCAP typically offers a package deal where, for an annual fee, subscribers can play as much of their members' music as they wish. The fee is scaled according to the number of people who will be present at the venue and, therefore, will be exposed to the music. "It's very reasonable," says Wilcox. "You'd probably spend more per month on heating and electricity than for one of our licenses."

Burning Man, however, has never obtained a performance license, says Wilcox. Music is one of the staples of the week-long event, with mostly electronic music playing around the clock. 25,000 people are estimated to have attended Burning Man last year alone. That size concerns Wilcox. "Sometimes we'll let smaller venues like nightclubs slide on past royalties, provided they obtain a current license. But this is just too big to ignore."

According to Wilcox, Burning Man organizers had rebuffed previous ASCAP attempts to secure a royalty agreement, claiming that the organization itself does not provide the music. All music is brought in by the visitors. Further, Burning Man is expressly non-commerical -- the use of money of any kind during the event is forbidden. However, says Wilcox, that doesn't matter. "Whether the venue itself makes any money or not, the artist's music was still used in a large venue, and he or she deserves to be paid for it. Our job is to make sure that happens."

More and more people seem to misunderstand the recent products from Apple. It's like people see them and go, "I wouldn't buy that, so why did they make that? Apple is [dying|dead|bankrupt|Republican]! The horror!"

Umm, so, yeah. There's approximately 5,999,999,999 other people in this world and I'm guessing, it's just a wild guess, that some of them might have different opinions.

The Downloadable Music Business Shuffle

The Downloadable Music Business Shuffle 09/01/2004 01:26 PM
As Microsoft gets ready to lau nch their own music download store, Apple has a carefully timed announcement adding an affiliate program to iTunes, so that individuals and organizations can get a tiny piece of the pie for every paid download they push on people. The end result, of course, will be to make iTunes' already miniscule margins even smaller. This, obviously, is of little concern to Apple, since they still view the iTunes store (properly) as a promotion for selling iPods. Meanwhile, Napster, fresh from sheddin g their core Roxio software business appears to be in complete denial about the marketplace. In an interview, Napster's CEO brushes off all of the competitive questions by pretending the real competition isn't competition, and then pointing out how badly they trash the non-competition. Obviously, Apple's iTunes is their main competition. However, he brushes this aside, pointing out that Apple only does pay-per-download, whereas Napster does pay-per-download and subscriptions. Since iTunes has no subscription offer, apparently, they're nothing. No customer anywhere would ever think of replacing one with the other, apparently. Of course, he seems to be forgetting two things: customers define what the competition is by deciding what products are substitutes, and it's pretty clear they consider iTunes and Napster substitutes. He also seems to completely ignore file sharing systems, which while much of the sharing may be in violation of copyrights, is still competition. So, with those in his blind spot, the competition he does bring up is Wal-Mart and Sony, two companies who everyone knew did a dreadful job creating music download stores. Any time you have your CEO defining away your biggest competition on a technicality and then bragging about how you beat the competition who had already beat themselves, you should be worried.

Tunewear Aluminum Clip for iPod shuffle

Tunewear Aluminum Clip for iPod shuffle 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

shuffle_clip.jpg imageGood morning, job seekers. Who here thinks the iPod shuffle's end cap is just begging to be lost? Why not invest in something a bit more practical, like this aluminum end cap with clip from Tunewear. It may only be a minute difference, but having your shuffle clipped to your jacket or bag sounds a lot better than just letting it dangle on a lanyard or sit in your pocket. And while Tunewear has only announced the clip in Japan, they do sell their products here, so I expect we'll see it soon enough. Since it's aluminum, you can pretend your little flash player is a PowerPod shuffle, too.

Wal-Mart Selling iPod Shuffle Mini

Wal-Mart Selling iPod Shuffle Mini 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

wal-pod.jpg imageCNet is reporting that Wal-Mart has begun shipping small quantities of the iPod mini to select outlets, possibly heralding a full-fledged adoption of the iPod line as a complement to its own flash player and music store. If nothing else, it is a sign of the iPod's complete transition to a commodity, branded product first, and a technological nerd gadget second. Whatever you think of Wal-Mart—whether devilish idol of all that is unholy about capitalism or just the multi-headed sentient cancer spurting forth from a humming black obelisk in the heart of Arkansas—there's no denying they move a lot of product.
