A New Gaming Engine That Can Make Games
More... Real?
A New Gaming Engine That Can Make Games
More... Real?
12/22/2003 02:10 AMThe graphics in computer video games are certainly getting better and
better with each generation. However, they're reaching the "good
enough" point, such that people are beginning to focus more and more
on the actual game play, rather than the game look. When they do
that, they notice that many games are... well, repetitive and
predictable. So, is there a way to make games unpredictable in a
realistic way that doesn't require massively powerful new hardware?
That seems to be the plan of Condition30, a Canadian company that
believes they've been able to
create more realistic gaming
engines that involve giving the engine some basic parameters, and
letting it figure out the rest - in order to ensure that the end
results are a lot less predictable and (hopefully) a lot more
realistic. The article is pretty short on details, and raises the
skepticism alarm in the back of my head. One thing going for the
company, though, is that among the founders is JD "Illiad" Frazer of
User Friendly.

Doomsday Engine 1.8.5 released
01/05/2005 10:16 PMThe Doomsday Engine is a Windows/Linux/Mac OS X source port of Doom,
Heretic and Hexen with an emphasis on good-looking graphics. The
highlight of this release (pun intended ) is the shiny surfaces
effect, or surface reflections. I've updated DEDDoc.txt in the Doc
directory with info on the new Reflection definition. Don't get too
excited, though -- it's basically just a very inaccurate environment
mapping, suitable for simulating simple specular highlights and shiny
surfaces in general (metal and ice are pretty good examples).
Reflections can be masked, which allows e.g. making only the little
icicles in a texture glisten. On SourceForge you'll also find
HexenShineExample.pk3, which contains a couple of examples of possible
effects for jHexen (although the feature does allow even more
variety). The shine examples are supposed to be used with the original
Hexen textures.
A number of new cvars and command line options were added as per
requests.
Detail textures can now be loaded from external resources with Detail
-> File.
Dani suggested making Doomsday crash more gracefully in Win32.
Doomsday will now attempt to trap the "bad" signals that Windows sends
and then shut down via a regular error dialog. Display settings etc.
should be restored correctly.
vcbuild.bat was updated so that the missing dialog resources are
included in the binaries. I actually tried running a "vcbuild jdoom"
in a clean install this time, so maybe it'll work a bit better than
before.

Released PHP 5 compliant MetaL engine
Released PHP 5 compliant MetaL engine
05/12/2004 01:25 AMA new revision of the MetaL engine that is compliant with
PHP 5 was released. Several classes that compose the different modules
of
the MetaL compiler engine were fixed to make object cloning work under
PHP
5 in parts of the code where object copying was intentional. These
fixes
are important because they make all MetaL engine applications ready
for use
with PHP 5. These applications include Metastorage, a Data Access
Object
(DAO) classes generator tool.

Smarty PHP template engine 2.2.0
released
07/11/2002 03:28 PM Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines for
PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block
functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template
engine, adding features such as configuration files, template
functions, and variable modifiers, and making all of this
functionality as easy as possible to use for both programmers and
template designers. Smarty also converts the templates into PHP
scripts, eliminating the need to parse the templates on every
invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and managable for
large application needs.

Motorola V3 "Razor" Reviewed
Motorola V3 "Razor" Reviewed

Mobile-Review has a
breakdown of the new Motorola V3 "Razor" phone, an almost all-metal
clamshell that surprisingly doesn't forego a lot of features to
reach its tiny size. Similar in function to the v600, the
titanium-clad V3 is still fairly wide, but manages to remain less than
14mm thin in profile even with lots of built-in features (like
Bluetooth).
To launch this September between $650 and $750, this spiritual
successor to the StarTac is yet another hot phone from Motorola
that manages to waltz into a crowded phone market and instantly make
its own segment. It may be small, but I expect sales of the V3 to be
big (I can't believe I just wrote that).

The magical Venus razor
The magical Venus razor
06/22/2005 03:01 AMI am not a fan of disposable razors, they always seemed wasteful to
me, and never very good. So a long time ago -- before they made fancy
razors for women -- I started using Gillette men's razors. Over the
years, I slowly upgraded until I was using the Gillette Mach 3. And I
was happy. Until I left it in the shower on Nantucket last week. So I
headed to Duane Reade for a new razor and for some reason decided now
was the time to try a ladies' razor. The Gillette Venus looked nice and the handle appeared
ergonomic and easy to manoveur, so without much thought I bought it.
Then I shaved my legs with it.
OH MY GOD!!
What was I thinking using that crappy old Mach 3 for all those
years? The Venus is AMAZING! Easy to control, nimble around the
ankles, slick and fast up the calf, and above all, smooth! My legs
haven't ever felt so smooth after a shave ever! I'm counting the
minutes until I can shave again, that's how much I love this razor.
It's a triple-mint, double-plus-good, two-thumbs up, five stars and
diamonds razor. For sure.

Vipul's Razor is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and
filtering network that exploits the broadcast characteristic of spam
distribution to limit its propagation. The primary focus of the system
is to identify and disable an email spam before its injection and
processing is complete. Razor establishes a distributed and constantly
updating catalogue of spam in propagation. This catalogue is used by
clients to filter out known spam.

Shaving is an
art. And like most art, or Perl, there's often more than one way to do
it. For the last few years, my +3 Wand of Baby's Butting has been the
Gillette Mach 3, usually with a very dull blade and lots of steaming
foam (helped even more so by my recent installation of this little
beauty in the shower). Now ConsumerWhore reviews the latest
iteration of Gilette's Mach 3, the M3Power, a lime-green vibrating
model that is powered by a AAA battery in the handle. He likes it well
enough, not because it shaves more closely, but because it lets him
shave faster. And if like mine, your Mach 3 was stolen by the
ladyfriend to shave legs, a dual-purposed M3Power will be snatched up
soon enough -- be sure to buy two.

06/06/2005 12:01 AMRAZOR & TIE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES LABEL-WIDE PODCAST
INITIATIVE
Debut Podcast Features Original Content From Hard Rock Trio Danko
Jones
(May 16, 2005 – New York, NY) – Razor & Tie Entertainment today
announces a label-wide launch of an ongoing series of podcasts. The
company is harnessing the new medium to expose fans to new music from
the company’s burgeoning roster and to enable their artists to reach a
wider audience. The first podcasts are now available on the company’s
website at www.razorandtie.com/label/podcasting/
The launch will also include podcast songs from up-and-coming Razor &
Tie rock bands, including New York City’s indie guitar-rockers Sam
Champion, Brooklyn’s enigmatic metal band, The Giraffes, and Temecula,
CA pop-rockers, The Chemistry with more to come. The site will
continuously be updated with exclusive tracks, song debuts, tour
diaries and more.
“Razor & Tie has always strived to be at the forefront of new trends
in the media,” commented Michael Krumper, SVP Marketing at the label.
“By distributing podcasts by our acts, it gives them yet another
avenue of self-expression that can connect with new fans in an
immediate and unfiltered way.”
The first podcast, entitled “The Danko Jones Road Report” is 6-minute
audio program recorded by Danko Jones, lead singer, songwriter and
guitarist of the Toronto-based power rock trio of the same name, and
offers an unedited look inside the ‘Pandora’s Box’ of a rock band on
tour. Similar to the syndicated radio show that Danko hosts in Europe
(www.themagicalworldofrock.com), the singer holds forth on his
favorite topic – rock’n’roll. The singer’s encyclopedic knowledge of
rock music and the many high-profile musicians who drop by their gigs
are showcased in the first of this upcoming series of podcasts.
“I liken these podcasts to a phone call home to a friend answering
their questions of “what’s up?” and “how’s the tour going?,” Danko
Jones comments. “Pretty intimate, me in my hotel room after a
gig.”
Danko Jones’ debut US album, WE SWEAT BLOOD, was released in April,
2005 and the lead radio track, LOVERCALL is currently #1 on FMQB’s
Specialty Charts and was just added to WYSP, the largest active rock
station on the East Coast. As the title of the album suggests, this
band is dedicated to performing live – they are currently on the road
with Mando Diao and after a short break in June, the band will be back
on another full tour of the U.S. starting July 5th.
