are the kinds of questions that Michael Wehrs, director of technology
and standards for Microsoft's mobile devices division, gets paid to
ponder. The Seattle Times has a short but sweet Q&A with Wehrs today.

We've been talking
about the recently leaked Windows Mobile 2005 for the past few days
and now bring you the tale of a brave, anonymous soul who installed it
and wrote a pretty in-depth walkthrough. The author clarifies that the
build he installs and discusses is a beta version, so keep that in
mind. Either way, the write up is detailed and outlines a lot of the
new features and interface changes, with lots of screenshots to
provide the eye candy. One thing is clear about the new version of
Windows Mobile—there's a serious gradient fetish going on.

all, it has to be true.

Opera Browser Performs for Windows

Opera Browser Performs for Windows
Mobile
09/02/2004 12:11 PMSwallowing its pride Opera has agreed to develop a smart phone browser
for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system. Not to long ago
Opera announced that they would never come out with a browser for
Microsoft Windows Mobile OS, so why did they change their minds?
It goes without saying that Windows is the world’s most popular
desktop operating system, but unfortunately the same cannot be said
for the smart phone market. Ever since Microsoft introduced its own
browser back in the day (browser wars), this Norwegian company and
Microsoft have had their problems (still are). Early last year
Opera’s browser had
"compatibility issues" when users
visited Microsoft's MSN portal webpage, but since then Opera and
Microsoft have reached an agreement worth $12.75 million. The reason
for Operas change of heart is because of the demands from its
customers. Customers who feel that Opera is the best browser no
matter what platform you're using, and according to the vast majority
of analyst Opera does in fact make the best browser for mobile devices
such as smart phones.
It's good to see a company meet its customers needs, but don't expect
Opera to be making a cash cow out of this market any time soon. As
they aren't the only ones with a smart phone browser. Right now the
smart phone market is dominated by Symbian operating systems, which
accounts for 94% of all smart phones worldwide. Leaving Microsoft
with 4% of the market, and the other 2% to lesser known smart phone
operating systems. One has to wonder how long it will take until
Opera calls foul, and we’re back to bickering between Opera and
Microsoft. Until then I look forward to seeing how Opera's smart
phone browser performs against its competitors.

Tasty screenshots of
Windows Mobile 2005 (aka Magneto) abound now that the ROM has been leaked. I'm biting
my tongue on the obligatory X-Men joke, but the screenshots look
sharp. (Granted, that was how my grandmother used to describe me, so
I'm really just assuming it's a pleasant thing.) Check them
out at PhoneMag (they have a whole gallery) and if you happen to be
running Mobile 2005 already, remember that you are likely a very bad
person. But still tell us all about it, kthx.

01/27/2004 02:25 AMThe European PDA market is showing signs of growth again after a three
year lull and Microsoft is gaining market share in the process,
according just-released figures from market researchers IDC. The stats
are further proof that many sectors of the technology industry emerged
from the technology recession during 2003. For Microsoft the market
figures held even better news. PDAs running Windows Mobile systems
software surpassed Palm OS-based devices for the first time.
