Nintendo Doesn't Believe In Online
Gaming
07/07/2004 12:44 PMWhile Microsoft and Sony seem to be betting big dollars on the rise of
online gaming from their console systems, Nintendo seems to think
they're throwing money away. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was
quoted as saying,
"cust
omers do not want online games." While I've been a bit skeptical
about the space in the past, the
growing
success of things like Xbox Live suggests that I (and Satoru
Iwata) may have written off the space way too quickly. In my defense,
my thoughts on the matter came before broadband was so common and
before there was any evidence either way. I still don't think all
games will go online, but there very clearly is a large and growing
market for console-based online games -- and to completely deny that
with all of the existing evidence suggests Nintendo has their head in
the sand.

11/14/2003 01:49 PMNintendo has been in trouble for a while. They've been losing out to
Sony and Microsoft in the game console world, and are suddenly facing
increased competition in the handheld gaming world (which Sony will
soon enter as well). Many people were pretty much writing them off,
but now they've said they're getting ready to
launch a completely new device, that is not an update on
either their console GameCube or their handheld Game Boy Advance.
What it is... they won't say. In fact, they're being so secretive,
that they apparently haven't even mentioned this to Nintendo's US
executives, keeping it entirely in Japan. People are guessing, and
the idea that seems to make the most sense is something that jumps on
the online gaming bandwagon, but we'll have to wait until May of next
year to find out for sure.

03/29/2005 02:21 AMSince both Nintendo and Sony announced new handheld consoles well
over a year ago, gamers have been anticipating both new systems. The
DS arrived to great fanfare in late 2004. Now it's Sony's turn.
The PSP is much more than a gaming console. It plays videos, MP3s,
and stores photos among other things. And the screen... it's big. Do
the big screen and extra features along with the higher price tag add
up?
It's console-level gaming in the palm of your hand.
With headphones you can have a great game almost anywhere, with no
meaningful diminishment in quality or graphics from the fact that you
are using a handheld. If you're fairly tech literate, finding torrents
of your favorite shows, or ripping your own DVDs (beware the DMCA) to
play on the PSP is a no brainer, and the MP3 functions are just icing
on the cake.
Sounds promising. Dig in to Ben Kuchera's review for the full scoop
on Sony's latest and greatest.
