AP - The United States won the men's 400-meter medley relay in world-record time Saturday night, giving Michael Phelps his record eighth medal of the Athens Olympics without him getting into the pool. Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker and Jason Lezak won in 3 minutes, 30.68 seconds, lowering the old mark of 3:31.54 set by the Americans at last year's world championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Guinness World Records recognizes Cisco router: Ninety two trillion bits per second? I have no point of reference here, but that sounds wicked good.

Guinness World Records certified Cisco's CRS-1 router as the highest capacity Internet router at 92 terabits [or] 92 trillion bits per second [...]

The CRS-1, which Cisco unveiled in May, is capable of downloading the entire printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress in 4.6 seconds, as opposed to a dial-up modem transfer rate that would take 82 years.

Ann Arbor, Mich. – September 1, 2004 – An international team has broken their own record and set a new Internet2(R) Land Speed Record by transferring 859 gigabytes of data in less than 17 minutes across nearly 16,000 kilometers of networks at a rate of 6.63 gigabits per second, about 10,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection. The record was set by a team consisting of members from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and CERN using the same IPv4 protocols deployed throughout the global Internet

The Internet2 Land Speed Record (I2-LSR) is an open and ongoing competition for the highest-bandwidth, end-to-end networks, with judging based on the speed of transfer multiplied by the distance traveled. Because of delays due to the speed of light and other factors, data transfer over the Internet becomes more challenging as speed, or distance, or both increase. With a mark of more than 104.5 petabit-meters per second, this record is the first time the 100 "petabump" performance threshold has been broken.

"In just two decades, the mobile phone has become the fastest-selling, most loved - and hated - consumer product. Britain is the world's most mature mobile market, with more mobiles per head of population and higher bills than any other country. I had to call Sprint today to find out why I haven't been able to access any data services at home on my Treo for the last 10 days or so. The new recording that you hear - first thing - is a message noting that activations may take up to 24 hours because so many people are revving up their new phones.

They could have a faulty light, you may have accidentally scratched their car while parking (and are honest enough to admit it) or they may be double-parked and blocking you. You send a text message to a specific number with the plate number in the message, and the service matches it up and forwards the message -- but only if (and it's quite an "only if") the other car owner has registered with the same service. Of course, while there may be good reasons for this service, it's likely many might want to use it for less than friendly reasons as well, such as stalking or yelling at a bad driver.
