04/20/2004 11:26 PM
In an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A". By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

Goin' to Chicago...

Goin' to Chicago... 07/11/2004 09:22 AM
My wife and I are taking 3 days of vacation in Chicago, starting tomorrow. I've been there many times on business, which means I'm very familiar with the airport and am fully qualified to operate the remote in the hotel rooms, and my wife hasn't been there in 30 years or so. So, we're going to do the tourist thing. Outside of the obvious, any recommendations? (Three notes: Second City is closed the days we're there, we don't eat meat and we don't much care for the blues.)...

Monday in Chicago 07/13/2004 10:08 AM
My wife and I arrived in Chicago yesterday afternoon, prepared with suggestions from y'all about what to see and do. Thanks! It was a beautiful day, so we set out down Michigan and walked along the lake shore. It is an odd and beautiful vista to see the skyscrapers hanging like a curtain behind the strip of beach. Then we walked through the Navy Pier, the mall-arcade-amusement park where I drank something blue and sugary. We continued along the shore and then headed back to the hotel. Don't hate us, but we passed a movie theater and on an...

Tuesday in Chicago 07/14/2004 11:36 AM
We had a great day yesterday on vacation in Chicago, although it wasn't particularly good in clearing items from our checklist. We got off to a late start because after breakfast I had a conference call I had to participate in. So, it was 1pm before we really headed out. We walked along Michigan and came upon the Millennium Park, due to open on Friday. We couldn't get a good enough view of the new Gehry concert shell, which looked twisty and interesting, but the site is interrupted by large photos of families from around the world, with just a...

Wednesday in Chicago 07/15/2004 10:42 AM
Our second (and last) full day of vacation in Chicago ended well but began with a disappointment. We slogged off to the Museum of Science and Industry. Despite its Stalinist name, it's actually one of those interactive science places that seems to be the offspring of a museum that got lusty with an amusement park during shore leave. You're always just a twist or a yank or a pop away from learning something. Unfortunately, the science seems aimed squarely at the Square Pants set. Why, did you know that DNA is all helixy, that friction generates heat, and that...

Chicago Museum to Get Wi-Fi

Chicago Museum to Get Wi-Fi 08/27/2004 01:30 PM
The very cool Field Museum in Chicago will get a Wi-Fi network, built by Concourse: Most users will pay a "nominal" fee to access the network, but Chicago Public School kids and their teachers will get free access. The museum also envisions using the network to offer interactive exhibits in the future. The Experience Music Project, Paul Allen's music museum in Seattle, also built a Wi-Fi network in its space recently. The networks sound useful internally for museum workers as much as for an extra service for visitors. I'm not sure how willing or interested I would be in paying to access a Wi-Fi network in a museum after I've already paid an entrance fee. But the networks would offer a great conduit for delivering content about exhibits to handheld devices as part of the regular museum experience. The EMP has a bar and restaurant that people can visit without paying an entrance fee to the museum so those users might be interested in paying to use the network....

Chicago Sun-Times Has RSS! 03/14/2005 06:22 PM

In my RSS presentations, I always use the Chicago Sun-Times as an example because NewsIsFree has been scraping their site for years. I used to be more of a Chicago Tribune reader, but I've become a Sun-Times person because of that feed.

Now, though, Steven, IMs to tell me he's found a feed on the Sun-Times site itself! Great news for Chicago newspaper fans! Maybe this will even trickle down to my Sun-Times-affiliated local papers...!

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

Business Intelligence Accelerators
06/02/2004 12:06 PM
Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of two new Office 2003 Business Intelligence (BI) Accelerators, the Microsoft® Office Business Scorecards Accelerator and the Microsoft Office Excel Add-in for SQL Server (TM) Analysis Services. Designed for and built on the Microsoft Office System and Windows Server System (TM) , the Office BI Accelerators provide customers and partners with increased access to data that is critical to maximizing business performance. Information workers and industry partners can also use the accelerators to assess performance in real time and reshape strategy and redeploy resources as market conditions change, staying one step ahead of their competition. By taking advantage of existing Microsoft technology investments, the accelerators are a cost-effective way for end users and partners to increase their business insight and automate formerly manual business processes, providing greater efficiency, productivity and enhanced decision-making.

To work through this demonstration, you need Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003. With Visual Studio .NET, we use the wizards to build a simple, custom Microsoft Windows service that launches Cassini, a managed code Web server that is described in the article, on the local computer. This Web server hosts the research provider consumed by the research task pane in Office 2003 editions. The code samples are provided in Microsoft Visual C# development language.

Microsoft Office Data Assistant for
Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2003
05/27/2004 03:09 AM
The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

Scoble Hunt

Scoble Hunt 12/22/2004 01:33 AM

Scoble is getting a lot of heat for his Hi Bill post.  I don't see why they think he is crazy or accuse him of insulting the Windows Media team.  The only part that rubbed me the wrong way was the firing part.  The rest is just a post written by an employee who cares enough about the company he works for to hang his balls out the window.

Who cares if his suggestions don't make sense?  That's his blog.  Should bloggers be restricted to writing posts that make sense to everyone?  Well, up your foobar if you think so.

As to what I think about his post, I think his suggestions are good.  Good, not in the sense of success or brilliance, but in the sense that such change will be good for Microsoft even if the project fails.  Like people, companies don't learn or evolve while doing the same things the same ways.
