Munich Reconsiders Linux Migration
08/04/2004 01:25 PMThe City of Munich has put its planned migration to Linux of 14,000
desktop PCs on hold due to concerns over software patents, the city's
CIO said on Tuesday night. The call for bids in the LiMux Project, as
it is known in Germany, was due to begin last week. But on Friday,
Green Party Alderman Jens Muehlhaus called for the city to examine the
impact patents might have on the decision, in light of software
patents legislation currently under consideration in the European
Union.
Muehlhaus said a cursory examination of Munich's proposed client
software had turned up conflicts with more than 50 European software
patents. The fear is that a company holding one or more of these
patents could issue a "cease and desist" order to the Munich
government, effectively shutting down the city's computer systems or
forcing the payment of licensing fees. In response, the city decided
to cancel the planned call for bids until the patent issue has been
investigated, according to a statement from Munich CIO Wihelm Hoegner
issued to the LiMux Project mailing list late on Tuesday.

The Hero of WWDC
The Hero of WWDC
06/17/2005 04:30 PM(Update 12 June 2005: this post has been edited so that no one person
at Apple is singled out—teams are teams, and the entire Intel
team deserves a huge round of applause.)
At WWDC a member of the Intel team helped me get NetNewsWire and
MarsEdit building as universal binaries. It took a little under two
hours. It took as long as that only because these two apps are made up
of over a dozen projects, and we had to change the settings (the
famous checkbox, plus some other things) and rebuild each project
individually.
Code changes? Nope, just time spent mainly in various inspector
windows in Xcode getting things set up correctly.
And that’s why I think this transition will be a
success—because it was so easy to create universal binaries,
thanks to the great work of these folks and the hands-on help they
gave developers at WWDC.

I’m aware that for some developers the transition won’t be
so smooth. But it will be smooth for a huge number of developers, and
that’s an incredible achievement.

Private Johnson Beharry awarded the Victoria Cross. The
Victoria Cross
is Britain's highest award for bravery in combat. It's awared is
incredibly rare. The last awards were made
posthumously
after the Falklands War in 1982. The last living recipients were
two Australians in

conditions must be so dangerous that only 10% of recipients survive.
The actions of
Private Johnson
Beharry are therefore worthy of a mention.
SBC is Hotspot Hero?
SBC is Hotspot Hero?
07/26/2004 12:37 PMThey're late to the game, but they're ready to party: It's a funny
thing. When SBC Communications first announced their FreedomLink plans
last year with plans build 6,000 hotspots over a couple of years, it
seemed like yet another announcement of large numbers with no track
record. Cometa was still on its 20,000 hotspots prediction and had
only a handful. McDonald's hadn't decided its partner and was in
limited trials. Wayport seemed stuck on hotels. And T-Mobile stayed
focused--as it still does--on a few ubiquitous chains. In the space of
a few months, SBC has moved from last man in, to practically first
mover. Let's review: The UPS Store. They will install Wi-Fi in
thousands of UPS Store outlets, which are places that business people
already congregate. This will probably also necessitate a change of
thinking for that mailing and business operation so that they can make
it easier for people to work for periods of time in their stores.
Wayport managed services. They hired Wayport to build out their
FreedomLink locations instead of creating a new division with no
experience in house. Wayport's Wi-Fi World and McDonald's. They're the
first telco to sign up to resell Wayport's McDonald's network, which
will ultimately be several thousand stores over the next couple of
years. Wayport/McDonald's supplier. They're also providing DSL and
other connectivity to many of the McDonald's that Wayport is
disconnected, which is part revenue, part branding for them as part of
the Wi-Fi World co-marketing model Wayport is pursuing. Airports,
airports, airports. They have roaming agreements now for their
FreedomLink users onto Concourse, Wise, Wayport, and (reportedly)
Sprint PCS's airport locations. There are only a handful of major
airports not represented by those networks: SFO and Boston Logan are
the two that come to mind. Pushing Wi-Fi into homes. SBC is selling
3,000 Wi-Fi routers a day to their home DSL users. This will drive
adoption by their users of Wi-Fi. People without Wi-Fi will buy
adapters or new systems because of the ease of sharing. Pushing
hotspots subscriptions to their DSL subscribers. It's a coming, and
it's going to be good--SBC keeps saying in its press releases that
they will offer FreedomLink at a substantial discount to their DSL
subscribers. $10 per month for unlimited use? $8? $15? Who knows. But
it's an audience they've already got and they can offer them
nationwide service with several thousand locations...

SARS Hero Jailed?
SARS Hero Jailed?
07/01/2004 10:23 AMTim Bishop: Dr. Jiang
Yanyong, hero of the SARS epidemic, imprisoned in China.
According to several sources, the Chinese authorities have detained
Dr. Jiang Yanyong, the retired surgeon, People's Liberation Army
veteran, and long-time Communist Party member who was one of the heros
of the SARS epidemic. As you may recall, at a time when the Chinese
government was lying and denying that there were more than a handful
of SARS cases in China, and was driving SARS patients around Beijing
in ambulances to hide them from the World Health Organization, Dr.
Jiang Yanyong wrote and signed a letter to the Beijing TV station and
Time Magazine telling the truth about the magnitude of the SARS
epidemic in Beijing. This simple act of truth telling did as much as
any other act to stop the spread of SARS, and to begin the process of
containing the epidemic. As I noted earlier, given that the party line
became that the officials who concealed the SARS epidemic were the
wrong doers, Dr. Jiang Yanyong was not punished for speaking out, and
was even faintly praised in a People's Daily article.

Mashup: Movable Type and WordML
Mashup: Movable Type and WordML
06/05/2005 11:46 PMWord docs from Movable Type: I have to say that Microsoft is
doing some great things with the new underlying XML format in Office
2003 and up. Using that functionality, the guys at Movable Type's Pronet published a simple
template that outputs Word
ML, and thus creates what's essentially a Word document directly
from Movable Type.
Bloggers who are used to updating their status by posting to their
Movable Type blogs can use a template like this to easily reformat
their posts into a weekly report in Word that can be emailed around or
simply posted to a web server for easy access.
I plugged the template in, and generated this Word document (60KB PDF; opens in a new
window — it's actually a PDF generated from Word 2003, since you
have to have at least that version to view it). I would have had to
screw a bit with the template tags to get it to come out exactly like
the Web version (we use a special plugin for line breaks, for instance), but even at the
defaults, there you have a Word document of the last five posts to
this blog.
The implications of WordML in general are fantastic. In the
business I support, we were always trying to come up with a modular
way to create large documents — piecing them together from
smaller documents. After trying a million different things in Word,
we finally defaulted to two dozen Word files and just doing "Insert
> File" until we had amassed the file we wanted.
With Word ML, we could maintain the pieces in in an actual content
management system (this is screaming out for eZ publish), then output them in whatever
order we needed, to be opened and printed from Word. I can't wait to
start playing with this.
(Also, wouldn't this obviate the need for a PDF rendering library,
assuming you were using a Windows server? If you need a PDF version
of content, output what you need in WordML, then instantiate Word and
print to PDF via VBA. And how long before someone just comes up with a
WordML-to-PDF executable that lets you skip instantiating Word
altogether? Extra points if they make it for *nix...)
