Student smashes SMS record

A Singaporean student looks to have smashed the world record for high speed text messaging.

Kimberly Yeo, 23, managed to send a 160-character SMS message in just 43.24 seconds.

It knocked more than 20 seconds off the official record of 67 seconds held by Briton James Trusler.

That's like 36 words per minute.

SMS text speed record smashed
June 29, 2004

A SINGAPORE business student with nimble thumbs has broken the Guinness world record for the fastest SMS.

Kimberly Yeo, 23, clocked 43.24 seconds for typing 26 words.

The 160-character, 26-word text she typed read: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

The previous record was 67 seconds for the same 26 words, held by James Trusler of Britain.

More than 500 people took part in Sunday's "SMS Shootout", The Straits Times said.

World Record Texting

World Record Texting 05/06/2004 12:55 PM
It's amazing the sort of stuff they keep track of for world records these days. However, for the "thumb generation" there's a new standard to aspire to. Already considered the world's fastest text message writer, James Trusler, has set a new world record for speed texting on his mobile phone by tapping out "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human." in 67 seconds. The article doesn't get into the (oh so important) details like what type of phone he used and whether it had helpful software like T9 to make texting faster. Of course, how do you judge such records when the technology is always changing? Is it fair to compare someone texting on a regular keypad against someone using a full Treo keyboard? What about the new DigitWireless phones with letter keys spaced between the number keys? There are going to be a lot of sub-categories for this record set.

A Singaporean woman has set a world record for mobile-phone texting, keying in the benchmark phrase (below) in 43.24 seconds, without the benefit of any predictive text utilities.

World Record for Drunk

World Record for Drunk 12/20/2003 05:03 PM
"The unidentified middle-aged man was unconscious but stable after a blood test showed 7.22 parts per million of alcohol, police spokeswoman Ieva Zvidre said. An average person would vomit at around 1.2, lose consciousness at 3.0 and stop breathing at a level of about 4.0 parts per million, Zvidre said, adding: 'This is one for the Guinness Book of Records.'"

Now, just because they used that term, you know someone's going to try and break it.
