AOL Got Some Balls
12/17/2004 06:32 PMAccording to this AP story: The walls surrounding America Online
Inc.'s well-manicured gardens are crumbling. In a move both risky and
essential, AOL is abandoning its strategy of exclusivity and will free
much of its music, sports and other programming to non-subscribers in
hopes of boosting ad sales. Welcome back to the world of the relevant,
AOL. It's a bold move, but it's about time you woke up and noticed the
World Wide Web. It'll be interesting to see what...

Great Balls of Fire!
01/25/2004 09:51 PM
Well, it's kinda obvious if you look at it, isn't it? This particular
ball is outside the
MIT campus area in Boston, Massachusetts
(USA), and for some unfathomable reason it looks like a really, really
early version of a steam engine - you know, after they figured out how
to make steam, but before they thought of pistons and chambers, and
were just experimenting with putting different things on top of the
steam.
Boston seems like a reasonably nice city: the centre is small enough
to walk around, there is a wealth of restaurants, and while the
architecture is sometimes horrendous, there is still enough 19th
century stuff lying around to keep a traveler slightly amused.
(Whee, I just noticed that boston-online.com is run by Movable Type.
That's a nice use for weblogging software: it does not look like a
blog, or feel like a blog, but it has all the power of a good blog
engine - like comments and trackbacks.)

Glowing Soccer Balls and More
Glowing Soccer Balls and More
09/08/2004 07:22 AM
ITmedia reports from the floor of the 58th Annual Tokyo
International Gift Show about stuff that glows. We do of course have
an abundance of glow sticks, "Lumipads" and flashlights that
automatically turn on when power to the charger is interrupted, but
perhaps the most interesting item are glowing balls, like soccer balls
and golf balls. Allegedly, the company decided to make a soccer ball
with lights in it "for the children who work during the day and can
only play with their friends at night." How do you go about turning
the lights on, you ask? Remember those glow sticks you used at the
beach? Same concept - two liquids inside will mix when the stick is
bent and start to glow. Does that mean you have to toss the ball when
you're done with it?
The company plans on releasing the ball stateside as well; I'm
assuming it will be close to the ~$18 price of its Japanese
release.

Presidential Inaugural Balls: $40
million of fun
01/04/2005 12:03 AMMark Frauenfelder:
Reason's Hit and Run excerpts a hilarious New York Times interview
with Jeanne L. Phillips, chair of the Presidential Inaugural
Committee:
Q: I hear one of the balls will be reserved for troops who have served
in Iraq or Afghanistan.
A: Yes, the Commander-in-Chief
Ball. That is new. It will be about 2,000 servicemen and their guests.
And that should be a really fun event for them.
Q: As an
alternative way of honoring them, did you or the president ever
discuss canceling the nine balls and using the $40 million inaugural
budget to purchase better equipment for the troops?
A: I
think we felt like we would have a traditional set of events and we
would focus on honoring the people who are serving our country right
now -- not just the people in the armed forces, but also the community
volunteers, the firemen, the policemen, the teachers, the people who
serve at, you know, the -- well, it's called the StewPot in Dallas,
people who work with the homeless.
Q: How do any of them
benefit from the inaugural balls?
A: I'm not sure that they
do benefit from them.
Q: Then how, exactly, are you
honoring them?
A: Honoring service is what our theme is
about.

Open Source Yoga advocates fight "Atom
Bomb Balls" Bikram
03/22/2005 05:01 PMXeni Jardin:

We've blogged about Bikram the yogi blowhard before -- Mr. Choudhury
has been making headlines over efforts to enforce copyright on a
popular style of yoga he claims to have invented. He's been
threatening to sue folks who teach them without permission (or
licensing fees).
Now there are reports that a group called "Open Source Yoga Unity" has
filed a suit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, asking the judge
to declare that Bikram cannot use his copyrights to stop others from
practicing or teaching the Bikram sequence of poses.
Apart from the Bikram pose sequence, Mr. Chodhury is also famous for
having uttered these words:
"Because I have balls like atom bombs, two of them, 100 megatons each.
Nobody fucks with me."
