Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash
Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash
03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Pretec Electronics
Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats
already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card
called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling
on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from
their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will
be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones,
which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly,
though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification
equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these
companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just
because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as
well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash
doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?
While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good
time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break
down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

03/22/2005 04:46 PM
SimpleTech has announced their
new Serial ATA Solid State Drive called the Zeus. Lacking any moving
parts, it's effectively a gigantic flash drive with an SATA interface.
The Zeus will be offered in capacities up to 128 gigabytes with read
and write rates reaching 60 megabytes per second. (Being a solid state
drive, though, it's true speed is in the seek time, which is
negligible.) The drives are also only 9.5 millimeters tall, making
them easily stackable and expandable. No word on price, but assume it
will require a second mortgage, considering their 8GB CF card was
selling for $6,000 last year.

Seagate Tries to Block Import of Cornice
Hard Drive Devices
07/05/2004 09:28 AMLast week, both
Seagate and Western Digital sued hard drive newcomer Cornice in
separate patent-infringement lawsuits. So besides that welcome wagon,
Seagate has now asked the US International Trade Commission to ban the
importation of any device that uses one of Cornice's 1-inch hard
drives, which brings me to why you care. If the USITC goes for it, MP3
players from Aiwa, iRiver, Element, Agere, Rio, and RCA -- and that's
just the short list -- could be illegal to import under the
injunction. That takes the lawsuit from boring, insider sniping to
slightly-less-boring and irritating, and well, I thought you should
know.
Also, it must be frustrating for a new company, without years of
links to cloud the Google waters, to return as the search results of
its name two links to its website and a third to a news story about a
lawsuit against them.
