In the past, our stats system has had problems scaling with our exponential growth. The good news is the stats system is being rewritten from scratch and will be deployed in the next 6 weeks. This new system will provide near real-time stats so that you will be able to see how many downloads, pageviews, and CVS commits are occurring as they happen. - Developer CVS check-in/check-out is getting a major speed increase in the next 5 weeks. Anonymous check-out has been performing great and soon SSH check-ins/check-outs will have similar speeds. With this upgrade are also eliminating the 5 to 8 hour delay that currently exists between developer check-in and anonymous check-outs. Everything will be in real-time. This means as soon as you make a code change, your users can grab the latest code. This will mark the completion of our long-term CVS infrastructure improvement project. Web server upgrades. Important for Project admins. 7. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net User, This week SourceForge.net turns five years old. Happy Birthday to us! The site started 60 months ago with a dream, a small team, and a lot of sweat equity. At that time, in late 1999, the Internet boom was raging and VA Linux (now VA Software, our parent company) was just weeks away of having the most successful IPO in history. SF.net's mission back then was simple: To provide a vehicle for open source developers to do what they do best, develop code. VA would handle all the cost of bandwidth, servers, and tools necessary to communicate and collaborate. The company at the time was in the Linux hardware business, and we wanted to give back to the open source community, which had been so generous to us. With only a handful of registered developers we made within the company predictions on how many open source developers were out on the Internet and how many would use the site. Our high water mark was 5,000 developers. Needless to say we were a bit off. The viral nature of open source quickly became apparent when we first opened the site to the public. Since 1999 our biggest challenge has been trying to stay ahead of the growth curve. Today we have close to 1,000,000 users and 100,000 projects. The 10Mbps we used for bandwidth has now grown to 1.6Gbps (including mirrors). Our five servers have ballooned to more than 80. Our storage requirements have gone from 10 gigabytes of data to more than 1 terabyte. Over the years, we've seen a lot of changes -- the Internet bubble popped, VA changed its name and business model, and geopolitically things couldn't be more different. Still, during this time, our mission has remained the same: to provide a place for open source developers and their software to thrive. I thank each of you for contributing in some way to SourceForge.net. We couldn't have done it without you! For year six, we have a lot of exciting things planned, including UI updates, enhanced tools, new tools, and Subversion support (version control). It will be an exciting year. Since it's Java based, it's cross-platform. IBM recently open sourced the database under the name Derby. A programmer has to fool the operating system and the software running on top of the operating system into believing that it is on genuine hardware. This requires meticulously emulating every single instruction and mode that the CPU has to offer, which is immensely complex. SourceForge.net's November 2004 project of the month is PearPC, a PowerPC emulator. Its emulation is robust enough to allow Mac OS X to run on top of it (although slowly). The emulator runs under many hardware platforms and operating systems, including Windows and Linux, so if you want to run OS X or Linux PPC on an Intel platform, you can do it! MYOB also claims a two to four time speed improvement in creation of invoices, purchase orders and other transactions across a network.

When Lonestar comes out sometime next year - as announced - it will be a free download. A relatively small download too (about, say 10 MB for the core part, not including any updated recognizers that could be released by then). It is user installable. It installs quickly, similar to any other Windows XP update. You can even uninstall it, should you choose to do so. Existing tablet hardware will be able to run it without major problems. Case in point - I am running it on my underpowered Crusoe-cursed first-generation Compaq TC1000, and I can't notice any performance hit.
