Journo's Iraq gadget-bag

Journo's Iraq gadget-bag

Journo's Iraq gadget-bag 05/06/2004 03:07 AM

Peter Maass, a war correspondant in Iraq, opens his gadget bag in a Gizmodo interview. He's got good kit.

You don't need a hardened computer, though breakdowns are frequent. I use an Apple iBook and took the precaution, during the invasion of Iraq, of covering the screen and keyboard in saran wrap, to keep out the sand. An item I didn't have, but dearly wished for, was night vision goggles. If you have to drive at night with the military in a warzone, as I and other non-embedded journalists did, you can't use any lights (you even have to tape over the red-light indicators on your dashboard). Driving without headlights in a desert behind a tank that doesn't have brakelights is an unpleasurable experience.

WalMart tried to confiscate journo's
camera
01/06/2005 04:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: A naked man streaked a Wal-Mart in Maryland, and a freelance news photographer snapped some pics. Wal-Mart sent out a goon who demanded that he turn over his camera and not take or publish photos of Wal-Mart without permission.
"He said if I didn't turn the camera over to him, he would have me arrested" and ban him from the store, Roy said.

Attorney Mary R. Craig, who represents The Herald-Mail, said Roy "certainly was well within his rights" to take pictures.

The store can set limits, such as on taking pictures inside, but the expectation of privacy probably is less outside, she said.

She said Roy probably didn't violate anyone's privacy, especially the naked man's.

Alice Neff Lucan, an attorney who represents the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, said Wal-Mart "emphatically" had no right to demand Roy's camera.

"He didn't violate any of Wal-Mart's rights and he didn't violate the streaker's rights," she said. "He just took a picture of what was in the public's view."

Gadget Overload

Gadget Overload 04/26/2004 04:07 PM
We've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets, but for many people, all we've experienced is the nee d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic (assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN) card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter being back at the hotel room."

Wireless. Sure. What a dream. I make most of my living writing about wireless technology, primarily Wi-Fi. So why is my traveling bag full of wires? Is it because Bluetooth turned out to be weaker and more confusing than planned? Is it because I have too much equipment that doesn't use standards? These are the questions I ask when I look at my regular traveling kit, and I have no good answers, just more wires.

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis? 08/31/2004 07:44 AM

warren_ellis.jpg imageWarren Ellis single-handedly reignited my love of funny books with his seminal not-near-enough-future comic Transmetropolitan. Does he need any more introduction than that? Currently working on a novel (without pretty pictures!) and the conversion of the Global Frequency books into a TV series, Warren dashed out his choices for what he includes in his Gadget Bag in typical style:

You just caught me. I'm off to Atlanta in 36 hours or so; jumping from British Summer Time to Eastern Daylight Time for something called Dragon*Con, where I'm a special guest (and also cultivating the Freak Vote in prep for my first prose novel, published next summer).

I travel light. I'm the guy whose bag hits the luggage carousel last. I'm the guy who's still there at three in the morning in an empty hall, with tumbleweed blowing past, sitting there next to horse skeletons and starving vultures, waiting for the airport workers to finish their smack break and grub around in the back of the airplane for my bag. Which usually comes out looking like they've been having group sex on it. So, five or six years ago, I decided that if it didn't fit into a carry-on bag, I wasn't taking it.

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use 09/09/2004 02:54 PM

If the details in a CNet article are correct, Microsoft's Longhorn will include tools needed(?) by IT managers to put the clamps on people using various gadgets to their work PC's.

Flash drives, iPods, and other doodads — both wired and wireless — that are able to store large amounts of data can be a security risk to the company; unscrupulous employees can use them to load up lots of sensitive documents and carry them out in a pocket. There's also the danger of such devices either accidentally or intentionally introducing viruses and other malicious software into a network.

Companies have been slow to react to the threat posed by digital storage devices in general. It's one that companies have turned a blind eye to for a very long time. If you think back, it used to be that stealing significant secrets was difficult because it was hard to get away with that much paper.

(for some reason I had a flash of Sandy Berger shoving paper in his pants just now!)

Many government agencies and the US military have already banned the on-duty use of some such devices, and many private businesses are following suit. But banning an item and being able to prevent its use are two different things.

Too bad the IT world has to wait for Longhorn to do this; a lot of pilfering can happen between now and then. But I'm sure there are 3rd party developers that are working on something like this as we speak, if they're not out already.

Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag

Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag 07/23/2004 02:39 AM
The latest victim in Gizmodo's "What's in Your Gadget Bag?" feature is Glenn Fleishman, who comes clean about a truly astonishing amount of crap that he lugs around with him in his electronics kit, described with the loving verbosity of a real geek.
The camera used to take this picture is a Canon S1 IS, a 3-megapixel device that has a 10x optical zoom, interchangeable lenses, and uses four AA batteries. Using 2200 milliamphere hour (mAh) batteries recently, I took 500 photos and movies over the course of a month before swapping out another set and recharging. The camera does 640 by 480, 30 frame per second mono-audio video up to the size of the memory card on top of its anti-jitter-motor photos.

Finally, I always carry a 12-foot extension cord with multiple plugs on the end, and the alternative two-prong adapter for my Apple power supply. You never know how many friends you have until you have extra outlets.

What do you get for someone who carries 10,000 songs wherever they go? Why, a portable sound system of course. Until recently, there were very few on-the-go options for using an iPod without headphones: Cassette adapters, wireless transmitters or stereo cables allowed the iPod to play through most home receivers, if such a device was available away from home; several smaller-stature computer speakers were offered, though none offered much in the way of portability; and the best...

Northern exposure 01/26/2004 06:53 AM
Create your own visited country map or write about it on the open travel guide.

I'm seeing a certain bias towards the northern hemisphere of our globe. And still so many wonderful places to see! The thought is at the same time a bit depressing, yet joyful. I always hate the preparations before travel: packing, ticket hassles, looking for the passport... But once I'm actually in the plane, squashed in a space smaller than a phone booth, squeezed between an 8-year old hyperactive girl and a 200 kg fat man, eating a meal which tastes slightly better than the cardboard box it comes in, all of it becomes worth the while: Because I love traveling, seeing new places, hearing new voices, being dizzy with jet lag, fighting about living space with cockroaches and spiders, tasting local soft drinks and beers, smelling the polluted air in the cities or the clean air in the countryside, squatting in the middle of a herd of kangaroos, sweating like a pig, freezing like a penguin, ... Yah! Life!

Northern Magic

Northern Magic 03/15/2003 10:14 PM
Diane Stuemer , an Ottawa area entrepreneur, and her husband reevaluated their priorities in the early 90's after Diane was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and her husband had a work related accident. After her cancer went into remission, and fearful that her 3 children would grow up without remembering her, the family took the bold decision to pack up everything and circumnavigate the world. Despite having less than 4 days of sailing experience, the family took to the seas with great enthusiasm.

The Northern Magic became the Steumer's home for 4 years as they travelled around the world. During that time Diane wrote a series of weekly dispatches to the readers of her hometown's newspaper. It became a tradition in many Ottawa households to read Diane's column in the saturday paper while dreaming of the exotic locals she was writing about (a sharp contrast from Ottawa's winters).

In those 4 years, readers got to experience Herbert (the husband) become a master mechanic, Diane adapt to life afloat, and the 3 sons grow up. When the Stuemers finally arrived home in Ottawa in August of 2001 they where greeted by thousands of well-wishers.

Sadly, Ottawa residents learned early in February that Diane had been readmitted to hospital where she was fighting a very aggressive melanoma battle. Today, Diane succumbed to her illness and passed away.

During their voyage, the entire family took on several projects in the countries they visited which are still active today. What amazes me about Diane is the experiences she lived through with her children, the memories they will cherish and the lasting effect their travels will have on the people they met.

Since we don’t get network TV, the PowerBook was propped up on the dinner table playing the nice steady robust webvideofeed from New Hampshire’s WMUR; herewith some notes on the evening and the election. Up here in Canada, American politics are a spectator sport; never as good as a really great World Series but better than most Super Bowls. This time around the Democratic race has outstanding entertainment value; we don’t know yet about the November event, but sometimes the divisional playoffs are more fun than the final anyhow...
