mera Phones Help Buyers Beware
"During the past six months, no fewer than four software firms have
released applications to help consumers turn their camera-equipped
mobile phones into personal bar-cod
e scanners....
Although the technologies are still in their early stages, the
trend is rekindling talk of a shopping revolution.
'Clearly, this is going to change the way people think about
shopping,' said Olivier Attia, chief executive of New York-based Scanbuy,
one of the firms specializing in bar-code-scanning software.
For example, 'with a camera phone that is also a bar-code scanner,
you can go into a store like Barnes & Noble, take a photo of the
ISBN number on a book and instantly receive a coupon offering the book
for 30 percent less at Amazon.com,' said Attia." [Wired News]
Of course, I think the better example is that a person could scan
an ISBN and automatically request the title from their local
library!

Chunking and scanning RSS feeds

I've been somewhat surprised to find myself preferring the Radio
UserLand aggregator to the others I also use:
NetNewsWire and
NewsGator. Last night I realized
why: it's a matter of chunking and scanning. In RU, I scan and
dismiss batches of 100 items. On a typical day, when I receive a few
hundred items, that's just a couple of clicks -- modulo any additional
effort to save or respond to an item. In NetNewsWire and NewsGator,
it's more of an item-by-item thing. There are consolidated views
available, but they display headlines (or truncated previews) only.
Processing a lot of feeds feels like more work.

Book Scanning at Stanford
Book Scanning at Stanford
01/22/2004 12:57 PMThe Book & The Computer: Another great article about
digitizing books in a library at Stanford. I have to stifle the
goosebumps when I read about this stu
ff.
When you're turning pages by hand, you can do maybe 150 to
200 pages per hour. It's slow. But the robot can easily do 600 to
1,200 pages per hour without damaging the books. And it's rigorously
consistent -- the page is always flat, the image is always good, and
software conversion allows you to index the text so you can search
it.
This entry is dedicated to Jenny, who says we all
don't talk about libraries enough. :-)

uncovered: A nice look at a book scanning machine.
A technician lays the book onto a special cradle inside
the machine and air jets gently fluff up pages on the right side. A
robotic arm swings over the book and sucks up one page with a special
vacuum, and pulls the page over. Two more robotic arms then swing over
and flatten out the pages with clear plastic clamps.
I love this idea. When I was a kid, I lived in the public library.
I just loved the idea that so much knowledge was contained in the
books around me. I have a subscription to O'Reilly's Safari, and I love
that so many books are available to me, on demand.
The words "archives" and "library" give me goosebumps. This
article almost got me teary-eyed, thinking about its implications.
I have professional fantasies of becoming a librarian.
All my hopes and dreams for the Internet are riding on machines
like this. I want every printed word in the history of Mankind
available instantly. Is that too much to ask? I have a huge smile on
my face right now, just thinking about it.
